^We don't have that kind of money.

Let Pena,Upton,and Scott walk.

Sign Napoli(Have Molina and Napoli split the season games) C/DH

Pick Up Farnsworth option (Only to trade him)

Trade James Shields and Farnsworth to Texas for Elvis Andrus and Alexi Ogando/ Or Trade Shields to the NL( Reds SS Cozart and RP Bill Bray for Shields depending on how they value Shields)

Attempt to sign CF Shane Victorino(we need a consistent lead off hitter like him)

Do not attempt to trade Shields to Arizona for Justin Upton, He is just like his brother, filled with talent but never meets expectations.

Either sign Kotchman or move Napoli to first or even bring up 1B Leslie Anderson

2013 Lineup (Hopefully)
CF Victorino
LF Jennings
3B Longoria
C Napoli*
2B Zobrist
DH Joyce
SS Keppinger
RF Fuld (Joyce is a great fielder, but Fuld is on another level)
1B Kotchman
Bench:
1B Anderson
IF Rodriguez
IF Beckham/Lee
OF Fransico
C Molina*

Rotation:
P Price
P Shields
P Hellickson
P Moore
P Cobb

Bullpen:
RP Davis
RP Howell
RP Peralta
RP Archer
RP Farnsworth
CP Rodney

Trade Nieman for Prospects and cap relief
Trade Shields for offense and cap relief (SS Andrus, or SS Cozart etc.)

they signed loney.

Badenhop is still listed under arb-eligibles, but he was traded to MIL.

Two questions:

1. Do you think Myers will start the year in Tampa Bay? I have been reading that most people expect him to begin in Durham and not be called up until June or so.

2. Do you think the Rays will risk losing Alex Torres by sending him to Durham? He is out of options, so they would have to pass him through waivers. It seems likely some team (Royals? Twins?) would grab him.

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... December 18, 2012 at 4:14 PM

1. I don't think he will. However, if they don't make any other additions, I think the chances improve that he can make the team in April. Still quite a few options out there that could be stop-gaps, though. Leaving him on the projected roster has more to do with the lack of options.

2. I think there's a better chance he's traded to a team like Houston or the Marlins, who have more room for a guy with command issues. He'll need to be really good to win that #5 spot with TB and he'd have to show much better control than he has for the Rays to trust him out of the 'pen.

Robert Rittner said... December 20, 2012 at 9:25 AM

I think that makes sense Jason. My own thinking is that even lacking options (and I think the Rays will acquire a DH or RH hitting OF/1B type) the Rays will not bring Myers north. My guess is they find some rotation of Zobrist, Roberts, S. Rodriguez, Fuld (using the current roster choices) with perhaps Guyer in the mix to fill the 2B, DH and OF spots.

I also think they will try to trade another pitcher although the problem is that Torres is probably still at a low ebb in value. Barring a trade, I think they keep him in the bullpen to start the season. I just cannot see them ceding that potential without at least a useful return, even if it is only another control-challenged high ceiling prospect they can keep in the minors. I don't see that Torres is any more uncertain than De La Rosa or Gomes, and his ceiling is much higher than either.

Of course, as you say, there is still lots of time for other changes, and spring training observations may affect decisions as well.

They re-signed Luke Scott

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... January 24, 2013 at 11:52 AM

One writer saying they're 'set to re-sign him' isn't good enough for me. Once I read, 'agreed to deal', then I make the change.

What about Kelly Johnson coming aboard....does that mean Ben Zobrist is no longer 2b eligible?

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... January 30, 2013 at 10:56 AM

Zobrist is still expected to play some 2B and then could move there full-time when Wil Myers is called up if Johnson isn't hitting. I'd guess he is still eligible but it depends on the league.

Robert Rittner said... February 15, 2013 at 10:05 AM

Shouldn't Vince Belnome be included in the list of players "on the outside looking in"? I think the Rays signed him.

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... February 15, 2013 at 10:19 AM

Robert, I'm only including players in big league camp from this point on. Belnome was not invited. A Triple-A player with no invite won't be on the depth chart until I start working on minor league rosters in mid-March.

Anonymous said... February 15, 2013 at 8:30 PM

Sam Fuld being out of options has to give him an edge over Duncan at this point. I don't even think Duncan has an opt out clause.

Robert Rittner said... February 16, 2013 at 5:14 AM

Thank you for the response Jason. I did not realize Belnome was not invited to the big league camp.

what the hell is going on out here ? nobody's
tackling.
a couple of weeks ago, paul severino, who alternates hosting "clubhouse confidential" on
the mlb tv network, gave effusive praise to your
site, saying that they consult it regularly.
you might have heard of his comments.
unless you're becoming bored with it, or something, i hope you won't take an offer you
can't refuse from someone and sell it.
i saw "moneyball" the other day. billy beane
turned down very big money from boston to stay
near his daughter, who lived with his exwife.
sometimes we're happier with less money.
in any event, i wish you well. you run a good
site.

Jason... I was reading on the Tampa Times website about the Ray's OD Lineup... Sounds like it will look like this:

Jennings
Joyce
Longoria
Zobrist
Scott
Escobar
Loney
Molina
Johnson

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... March 21, 2013 at 9:41 AM

Thanks. I saw today's lineup, which confirms the possibility. I'll make the change.
