Not that it means much, but for the batting order I'd go this:

CF Jay
RF Beltran
LF Holliday
1B Craig
C Molina
3B Freese
SS Furcal
2B Descalso

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... November 20, 2012 at 10:06 PM

If Furcal is struggling, as he did after the first 2 months of the 2012 season, I think there's a strong possibility he's hitting lower in the order. And don't discount Kolten Wong in the majors during the 2nd half and hitting in the #2 spot if Descalso still isn't hitting much.

If Furcal is healthy, however, I think they'll give him a shot at the top of the order to see if he can duplicate what he did at the start of 2012.

Yeah I hear what your saying. I can see that as a possibility. However, you have Holliday hitting 4th, he was 3rd all of last season.

Didn't even realize. Just thought it balanced better with Beltran in between Craig and Holliday. Makes sense that he stays in the #3 spot then.

What are your thoughts on Jay as the incumbent leadoff hitter? .373 OBP was a nice surprise and his extra base power is sure to return after a full off season of rest on his injured shoulder. He is capable without a doubt and I am expecting to see it even if Furcal can come to spring training healthy

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... December 23, 2012 at 10:24 PM

Definite possibility. I've thought about projecting the lineup that way but I really think they'll wait and see if Furcal is healthy and looks strong in Spring Training. I think veterans usually get the benefit of the doubt until they prove they can't handle a role they've had for so many years.

Sean said... December 28, 2012 at 12:00 PM

I think that is fair, especially given how hot Furcal came out of the gate last year. Its his spot to lose if he comes into the spring healthy.

My excitement right now has to be around the potential of Matt Carpenter getting some major innings at 2B. Reports are that he has been working vigorously this offseason to improve agility and foot speed particularly around the bag. The possibility of throwing out a lineup a few times a week in which 6 players had an OPS of .800+ last season is video game esq. Not to mention the potential for Jay to come even closer to that threshold. Cannot wait to see how Carp is progressing defensively come February

I strongly believe that Allen Craig will hit clean-up, with Beltran hitting second. Craig was terrible in the NLCS yet he hit clean-up every game. I think Matheny has extreme confidence in his ability as a clean-up hitter, especially after his league leading.400 RISP last year

I think it could go either way and then could change throughout the season depending on how guys are doing. In my playing time projections for Baseball Prospectus, I believe I had it split pretty even with Craig and Beltran getting time in the 2 and 4 spots.

What's your confidence right now in Shelby Miller over Kelly/Rosenthal/other (e.g. Lohse) for the 5th starter?

I would think that Kelly is the most likely pitcher of Miller/Kelly/Rosenthal to stay on the active roster. I can't envision a scenario in which he returns to Memphis.

If it comes down to competition for bullpen spot, I think they'd place Rosenthal (or Miller, if that were the case) in AAA to build up innings and allow Kelly to remain on the roster. Kelly's the only of the trio that couldn't benefit from additional innings in Memphis. Of course, potential injuries can change the dynamic quickly

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... February 6, 2013 at 2:18 PM

I think he has to be the favorite based on his 2nd half of 2012. Something clicked for him. Unless he takes a step backwards in Spring Training, he's ready to be a successful big league starter.

Agreed on Rosenthal but I think it will be hard to keep him out of the bullpen very long. He could be a weapon in the 7th and 8th innings.

Garrett H said... February 6, 2013 at 3:29 PM

Definitely agree on Rosenthal and on Miller.

My premise, I guess, is if the roster were to include only two it would either be Miller/Kelly or Kelly/Rosenthal. I can't imagine Miller/Rosenthal with Kelly going to MEM, even if it would have a higher immediate yield. Perhaps Salas is most likely to be odd-man-out.

I've followed you on Twitter for awhile. REALLY, enjoy the site and intelligent dialogue.

Jared said... February 9, 2013 at 8:22 PM

I agree Kelly over Rosenthal, but for a slightly different reason. The Cardinals are very high on Rosenthal as a starter, they seem like they want to make sure to give him every opportunity to make that happen. Considering how quickly he was pushed last year, he needs innings (even AAA innings) to build up his arm to start a lot more than he needs MLB experience in the bullpen at this point.

I agree the staff you have listed is what they would be hoping for down the stretch and in the playoffs, but I think Rosenthal will start the year in someone's rotation, whether AAA or the majors.

Love the site too, any changes like this would just be nitpicking or personal preference, you do a great job.

I understand the defensive resume that Cedeno can boast, but to me this is now the Pete Kozma show in st. louis. What more does he have to prove at this point to get the bulk of the starts at short in the early months of the season? I can't even imagine what people would be saying if Tyler Greene had put together an offensive month and a half like Kozma did at the end of the year last year.

IMO its his job to lose. And this spring has only gone to cement that up to this point. He has a knack for getting on base and has surprising pop that continues to be shown consistently. Just as all of our potential options he comes with some shortcomings, but for my money none that cannot be compensated for with the likes of 5 potential all starts surrounding him on the diamond.

Jay CF
Beltran RF
Holliday LF
Craig 1B
Molina C
Freese 3B
Carpenter 2B
Kozma SS

Eduardo Sanchez is really making a case for a spot in the pen out of the spring. Seems more likely by the day that if Kelly wins the 5th spot out of the spring, both Rosenthal and Miller will be a two headed monster at AAA to start the season.

According to most reports his delivery has become much more compact and consistent. The results have proved that in his small sample thus far not allowing a base runner to this point, but hearing our hitters response to facing him in tell me more than that.

Quite a nice problem to have if thats how it all shakes out. That is without even mentioning the likes of Wacha, Lyons, Siegrist, Gast, and Manness all who have impressed at major league camp in some capacity the past few weeks

What do you guys think of matt carpenter?

Anonymous said... March 17, 2013 at 2:23 PM

Looking more and more like Adams breaks camp with the team. I assume that's over Cedeno. Says a lot about what they think of Carpenter as a 2B
