Drew at SS would be a good fit for this team

Anonymous said... October 25, 2012 at 2:48 PM

Yes, but they have barmes in place at ss and they are not going to spend potential all-star money on a guy who will just sit the bench, get an occasional start and pinch hit because their are other needs that they need to address with that money.

Anonymous said... October 25, 2012 at 2:49 PM

and why isn't Starlings Marte listed as making the team?

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... October 27, 2012 at 8:50 PM

Marte, Presley, Tabata, and probably even Travis Snider are in the mix for a starting job. I believe Snider is out of options so I think he's in. Of the others, all were mediocre hitters in the big leagues last season. Only one, Tabata, has a lot of $$$ invested in him on a long-term deal so he has the edge, in my opinion. Marte has big potential but was rushed to the majors.

They have agreed to terms with Russell Martin

Anonymous said... December 14, 2012 at 7:49 AM

would love to see them deal Hanrahan and Tabata (plus maybe Irwin) for Capuano and Gordon.

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... December 14, 2012 at 10:07 AM

I think all those names have been rumored, although Gordon's value has to be way down right now. He's a speedster who doesn't get on base and has no power, and isn't particularly great on defense.

I think the Bucs can do better than that if they trade Hanrahan and an OF who was off to a promising start in his career, is still young, and signed to a team-friendly deal.

Anonymous said... December 27, 2012 at 8:03 AM

Well, the hanrahan trade went down, i didn't understand it but ok. As long as Melancon can help in the bullpen, i think having sands will only make the outfield/bench better. It will mean that there will be competition between Tabata,Marte, Snider, Presley, and Sands for who gets the corner spots. Lets wait and see

Anonymous said... December 28, 2012 at 2:06 PM

Liriano has to be better than Bedard/Correia right?? I hope McPherson wins the #5 spot. There has to be a better option somewhere via minors or trade than Barmes @ SS but not sure what can be done. The biggest need we have.

Lebo said... December 29, 2012 at 10:54 AM

Hopefully Liriano will be mentored by AJ and Wandy and find his 2010 form again. Minnesota hasn't had anyone to mentor this guy for a few years and it has showed. He needs help from vets like AJ and Wandy to show him how to throw strikes early in the count and get ahead of hitters! Liriano walks way, way too many and it eventually gets him. Still has an out pitch as he K's better than one hitter per inning but has to learn to throw more strikes especially early in an AB and be more efficient. Liriano also gives up less than a hit per inning. A lefty SP in Pittsburgh has a slight advantage vs righty too plus a move to NL should also help his numbers if he learns to limits the walks!!!!

I'd like to see Pittsburgh sign AJ to a one year extension past 2013 too. 2014 rotation - AJ, Wandy, Liriano, Cole, and Taillon with McPherson as 6th starter, insurance vs injury, and learning to be a solid backed starter for 2015. LET"S GO BUCS!

Lebo said... December 29, 2012 at 11:54 AM

I also like the Hanrahan trade more than most. Grilli will be the closer and Melancon will be put in 8th inning slot. He started 2012 for Boston with 4 bad games then pitched realatively well after that considering he was in AL EAST vs NL Central like 2011 when with Houston. I think both will do fine this year for us. Our bullpen looks pretty solid still to me.

Hanrahan struggeled last year in Septmeber with control plus the fact we will lose him anyway next year is why I am fine with the trade. I can't see him doing anywhere near as well this year in the worst division for pitchers in MLB. The AL EAST is stacked with solid lineups.

I'd also like to see Clint give Sands 12-14 starts monthly at RF/1B. We are REALLY lacking power at both corner OF positions and he can provide that for us. Marte wasn't quite ready last year and I'd like to see him start 2013 in the minors for the first 4 weeks then brought up again if he hits well. Tabata should be our other corner OF starter and see how he does.

THOUGHTS??

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... December 30, 2012 at 10:14 AM

Lots of good points, Lebo. I'd like to see Marte start the year in the minors as well but not many people agreed with me when I had Tabata projected there early on. I finally made the change after Huntington made a statement that made it seem like Tabata/Snider would compete for a spot and Marte was a pretty good bet to start.

I like Melancon to bounce back in the 8th inning role. Return to NL Central should help.

Not sure on Sands. He probably needs to play everyday to be effective. Lots of doubters because of his long swing. Probably doesn't do well in part-time role, although it would be good to get a long look at some point playing everyday.

Lebo said... December 30, 2012 at 3:02 PM

Jason, what do you think of Liriano as the #4 starter? I think IF Wandy and AJ can mentor him some and get him to throw consistent strikes early in the count thus hopefully avoiding the large walk totals he has had previously, he can be a very solid #4 starter. I don't expect all star type numbers but maybe 12-9 is his max best results. Every year of his career except one he has allowed less hit than innings which I like to see but walks have put him in bad situations too often; his WHIP is too high @ 1.50+. In addition to pitching in Pittsburgh as a lefty, moving from AL to NL and the weakest division in the NL as well can't hurt any either. Positive, veteran teaching from guys like Wandy and AJ should help too.... I hope. I was originally hoping they would sign Marcum to be our #4 for a couple years.

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... December 30, 2012 at 10:27 PM

Great signing because of his upside. I think he's too risky if he's your #1 or #2 starter, but he fits in nicely behind AJ, Wandy, and McDonald. Don't know if Wandy and AJ are the mentoring types, but I think having four proven veterans in the rotation and so much talent on the way should give them a chance to finally break the 20 year losing streak.

Lebo said... December 31, 2012 at 8:57 AM

I don't think 84-78 is out of the realm of possibility this year. It was hard to watch the unbelievable last 70+ days of the season. They looked like a whole different team compared to before the break. 2012 was better than 2011 so with same gain as last year, this is about where they should finish. I like the pitching much better this year than last, 1-12, and Cole could start season for Pittsburgh but would rather see him like Marte, get a feel for a month or so in minors before the call.

Lebo said... January 8, 2013 at 12:05 PM

Where is Liriano?? We haven't heard anything for 19 days?? Did he fail it??? Is he out of the country and will take it just before spring training??

Lebo said... January 8, 2013 at 12:19 PM

How good would Michael Morse look in our lineup hitting 5th between Jones(RF) and Alvarez(3B) breaking up the two lefty hitters! Another potential 20-25HR guy and they are looking "reportedly" for a lefty setup guy in return. He'll be 31 yr old to start the year and is capable of hitting .290/25/90 for someone this year for 7 mil salary. We don't we take a chance!!! WHY NOT??? for a lefty setup pitcher??

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... January 8, 2013 at 12:50 PM

Re: Liriano

News finally broke that no deal is imminent because of right arm injury. I've removed him.

Re: Morse

I think the Nats could like a deal with Justin Wilson (potential power lefty reliever) and another pretty good prospect. Not sure if the Pirates would do that, though. Morse would be a great fit between Jones and Alvarez. I kind of want to see Travis Snider get a shot, though. Any other acquisitions might make him the odd man out unless they really want to send Marte back to AAA. I wouldn't be opposed to that, by the way.

Lebo said... January 8, 2013 at 3:23 PM

Re: Liriano

Just read the news. I'd say something still gets done after he is checked out completely as the injury isn't to his throwing arm.

Re: Morse

I'm not that high on Snider. He just seems to lack confidence or something. He didn't hit RHP very well last year either which was his calling card the previous 3 seasons. I'd much rather see Morse bat 5th for the Bucs but Pittsburgh won't take on more salary or take a chance like trading for someone who might only be there for one year. Just not their style - never been, never will be so it's a moot point anyway but fun to wish we could be like "some" other teams who want to win and not just MAKE MILLIONS for the owners annually.

Mark Cuban, calling Mark Cuban......

Lebo said... January 13, 2013 at 3:43 PM

I think the Pirates should now take a look at Shawn Marcum. They could likely get him for same money or maybe slightly less as I think they paid too much originally for Liriano. Marcum has consistent totals as opposed to "upside" and more of a gamble. Marcum is a pretty solid 1.15-1.25 WHIP guy and by slotting him in as our #4 SP it allows Pittsburgh to bring up Cole as our #5 starter mid May or beginning of June and then Taillon in August or September getting him ready for our 2014 rotation. I'm not sold McDonald is going to be the guy he was first part of 2012 but rather somewhere between 1st half and 2nd half of last year but I hope I am wrong. I think I'd rather have Marcum and likely 13-10 as opposed to Liriano and ??? Maybe 13-10 for his best, maybe 6-12 too??

Lebo said... January 13, 2013 at 4:05 PM

Let's talk 2013 DRAFT --

With our 9th overall pick and first of two in the top 14, they should go for the best pitcher available whether it's a college player like Wahl or high school pitcher such Kohl Stewart, or Ian Clarkin. Wahl would be ready much sooner as a college guy and think he would be my first choice of them if available with their pick. He would slot in GREAT as our #3 starter in mid 2014 or early to June 2015.

With pick #14, they have to go bat unless a stud type pitching prospect falls down to them and would be definitely signable. We have to make the most of these picks and not miss as it's hopefully the last time we draft this high for the next 6-8 years. Catcher, corner INF, or OF is where they should draft if position player.

Lebo said... January 14, 2013 at 5:50 AM

RE: Marcum

FOX Sports' Jon Paul Morosi reports that the Rangers, Padres and PIRATES are showing interest in Shaun Marcum.

Hey, they are reading my posts here! :)

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... January 14, 2013 at 2:53 PM

Lebo, you'll have to settle for Karstens. Not sure if there's room for anyone else now. They might just let McPherson and Locke battle it out and then keep the possibility open for Gerrit Cole joining the rotation in June or July.

Lebo said... January 15, 2013 at 4:20 AM

Yeah, I saw that. Our sad ownership STILL thinks making millions annually is better than giving Pittsburgh what it finally deserves.... a winning team after 20 years and heaven forbid a chance to win a title! I won't be attending any games this year for the first time in over 2 decades. The $1000 I usually spend to go to about 10 games will rather be spent elsewhere.. not that they care at all as they will still have full pockets. :(

Lebo said... January 15, 2013 at 4:35 PM

Jeanmar Gomez and Jeff Karstens too?? WOW -- It's going to be an EXCITING spring training for spots #4 and #5 in the Pirates rotation this year!!

Anonymous said... January 16, 2013 at 6:42 AM

I for one like the Karstens deal, got a solid guy for less money. I know the Pirates deserve all the crtizism they get, but this was a great move. I always felt if Karstens was pitching they had a chance to win. I also feel they should still go after Marcum, if they get him or Liriano thats a pretty good rotation.

Anonymous said... January 27, 2013 at 1:56 PM

Wouldn't Pittsburgh if they wanted to truly compete sooner rather than later have be smart if they were to sign Lohse and give up one of their draft picks?? They are likely to not resign AJ Burnett for 2014, it's not given they will keep Wandy for 2014 either with a 13mil price tag, and I would also think Liriano will only be in town for the next 18-24 months depending upon how he does and they do. He could be dealt at the trade deadline in July 2014 as well. This would leave Cole, Taillon, this years pick(s), and who knows #4 and #5 in the rotation after 2014. Just looking towards the future.

Lebo said... February 2, 2013 at 4:46 AM

UPDATE:

Pirates GM Neal Huntington was non-committal on Friday when asked if he expected to reach a contract agreement with Francisco Liriano before spring training begins.

The Pirates remain interested in signing Liriano, but are interested in restructuring the proposed deal. Liriano injured his non-throwing arm in December and is unlikely to be ready to go when pitchers and catchers report on February 11. With strong mutual interest, this deal should get finished in the coming weeks.

I saw that. It kind of came out of nowhere for me since it had been reported that the deal, which was already delayed once, was finally settled. I'm choosing to ignore it for another day or two before changing the projection back AGAIN! Hoping more info comes out, though.

Liriano deal 'finally' done.

Morton is out of options, if he's hurt he starts the year on dl.

Anonymous said... February 19, 2013 at 5:28 PM

mazzaro outrighted (2-8-13)? why didn't bucs have to DFA him?

Lebo said... February 21, 2013 at 4:12 AM

Come on ownership, here is OUR chance to sign a solid steal of a player in Lohse. Make the offer of 3yr and 30 million. How good would he look as our #3 behind AJ & Wandy!! Grow some balls guys and spend a little for us. We could get wild card with a little more help and this is it, right there, wanting to sign with someone soon!

I don't expect ownership to even call Scotty however.

Lebo said... February 21, 2013 at 4:32 PM

Anyone saying, "This guy is nuts, there is no way Pittsburgh has a chance at a wild card"?? That was the same thing said about Oakland and Baltimore last year when they were both picked by "MANY EXPERTS" much smarter than me to finish last in their division -- a longer shot yet to make the playoffs compared to this years Pirates roster w/Lohse.

Anonymous said... February 27, 2013 at 10:08 AM

Lohse is till out there and available ownership.... who doesn't care to spend or win.

Anonymous said... March 21, 2013 at 5:38 AM

A couple of points I believe it is likely Sanchez platoons with Jones and not Snider. Sanchez to my knowledgehas never he played the outfield. Also the highest level Matt Curry played at lasy year was AAA not AA.
