Yep. He pitched a scoreless inning in relief.

blake wood no longer on team, no need for him to be in arbitration eligibles

thanks for the work, i really appreciate it

I can't think of another team in baseball that would have given Guthrie a 3 year deal. If this is what it takes to get a 34 year old #4 starter (at best) then MIA actually is going about their business the correct way.

I had him projected at 2 yr, $14M so I didn't think he'd get a 3-yr deal either. But maybe that's the only way the Royals get him. The cost for the top free agent pitchers is likely to be even more ridiculous. I like their aggressiveness and like that they're reportedly not done adding to their rotation. With Paulino and Duffy 2nd half possibilities and Odorizzi ready to contribute, I think they could be a .500+ team and at least stay in the Wild Card race late in the season.

davis has experiance pitching out of the pen. hochaever does not. therefore i think davis will open the season in the pen and hochaever in the rotation

Royals said they're giving Davis a chance to start. Sure, there's a chance he can end up in the bullpen but I think he's good enough to win a rotation spot. As things stand now, the last spot would be a competition between Hochevar, Chen, Mendoza. I think they'll try to trade at least one of those guys.

It's not realistic to think that Getz and Giavotella will platoon at second base. I know it makes sense, but the Royals don't use platoons.

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... December 11, 2012 at 6:35 PM

It seemed like they were for awhile with Getz and Betancourt early in the year and later in the year with Falu and Giavotella. Probably not a classic platoon, but tif Giavotella is on the team, I'd expect he's in there against lefties. With that said, a utility infielder who can play SS and 3B, as well, would be a better fit. For now, I have Irving Falu on the roster and he can cover those spots.

just wondering why you have not moved george sherrill and dan wheeler to the team yet.

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... December 13, 2012 at 9:10 AM

They are in there. Look under ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN (Relief pitchers).

Chris H said... December 14, 2012 at 1:12 PM

Fair enough on the 2B situation, Jason. I'm impressed with the way you keep up on role players. But as a Royals fan, it's sometimes tough for me to decide whether I'm being cynical or merely objective. I honestly don't think they will give Giavotella any more chances.

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... December 14, 2012 at 6:10 PM

They made it clear last year that they're not sold on Giavotella. But I don't know for sure that's the case and the way the roster is currently constructed, I think he'd be one of the 25 guys on the roster. As long as he's on the team, he'll be given a chance to compete and I think he's better than the other options they have to play 2B against LHP's.

Do you see the Royals making a move to solidify 2nd base before the season? Kelly Johnson may be affordable.

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... January 26, 2013 at 9:19 AM

That's a very interesting call. I'm sure Johnson's price has gone way down by now. He'd add some power to the lineup, but he strikes out a ton and isn't that great defensively. I think they have to see what they have in Giovatella, although based on their usage of him in 2012, I don't necessarily think the Royals believe that.

So yes, I think he's affordable and I think there's at least a chance it happens.

3/24/13 - Sounds like Butler is going to start the season batting 3rd.

Anonymous said... March 25, 2013 at 12:15 PM

Yost is now experimenting hitting Hosmer 6th with Moustakas batting 4th and Butler 3rd. That has been the lineup the past couple of days as well as for today's game.
