Still seeing Chris McGuiness as the primary DH if the season started tomorrow? I'd think Aviles and/or Carrera would be more likely?

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... December 23, 2012 at 10:22 PM

I don't feel like strong enough about Aviles or Carrera. And if they drafted McGuiness in he Rule 5, I'm sure there's at least a chance they feel he can handle it. However, I do see them moving regulars in and out of the DH spot and having Aviles and Carrera out on the field a few times per week. So not necessarily McGuiness as the regular DH.

why not a guy like laporta becoming the reincarnation of Hafner? full time DH

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... January 3, 2013 at 3:04 PM

I thought they would give him a shot early last season when he was killing the ball in Triple-A. Never happened. Removed from the 40-man. Don't think he's on their radar.

Could you add the total pay roll to all of the team pages to see whether they are done spending in FA, and how realistic it is of them to let certain players go.

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... January 15, 2013 at 8:55 AM

Yes, I will in the next few days.

They hate Laporta for some reason, never gave him consistent at bats for any extended period of time. I'd like to see him start the year at DH, and after a month, if they couldn't get a better DH or if he truly is as awful as they think he is then cut bait for a second straight year. Supposedly the guy has and ego and isn't the friendliest man in the league to fellow players/fans.

Anonymous said... January 24, 2013 at 11:52 AM

Josh Tomlin will almost assuredly start the year on the 60 day dl. He has just one option left, no point in them burning it to place him on the AAA dl. The move will also open a spot on the 40 man which they will need for their bench.

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... January 24, 2013 at 11:56 AM

For sure. I just hadn't gotten around to adding a 'Projected DL' section for all teams yet.

Anonymous said... January 24, 2013 at 3:50 PM

Just so you know, as someone who follows the Tribe very closely, it's likely David Huff will start as the long-reliver, not Herrmann (also giving them another lefty) and Kluber is more likely to be the 5th starter to begin the year than Carrasco, if they do send Bauer down.

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... January 24, 2013 at 9:04 PM

I've been meaning to move Huff. I'm a believer in Carrasco, though. Should be fully recovered. Was really close to breaking out before injury.

I think it would awesome if you would do projected stats, I know you probably don't have time, but I would like your take on everything.

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... January 31, 2013 at 10:01 PM

Thanks. I think I'm OK at giving an estimate of every player. But that's all gut feeling. There are so many great prediction programs out there that have had a ton of work put into them so I wouldn't even try to compete. My recommendation is Baseball Prospectus' PECOTA projections. They'll be out in a few weeks. A BP subscription is $5/month and there's no contract so it's well worth it, even for just a month or two. I do the playing time projections for those, then update 'rest-of-season' playing time projections regularly so they're adjusted constantly. Look into those.

With that said, feel free to send over any questions on my projection for any player (Twitter/email/comments) and I'll be glad to answer.

Do you know the best "stat predictions" site that is free?

I love the way Lou marson calls the game and when he plays consistently his BA goes up considerably! Do you think it would be a good idea to have him as the everyday starting catcher and have Carlos as the DH? Santana can not call a game at all, his bar is what we need!

Anonymous said... February 7, 2013 at 11:21 AM

Remember when the payroll was $91,974,979

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... February 8, 2013 at 9:49 PM

It depends on the other options in the lineup. If they have Reynolds at 1B and a solid option at DH, it makes sense to go with Santana as often as possible behind the plate. But I would still expect Marson to catch 2-3 games per week or slightly more than a regular backup catcher.

benji_mon said... February 10, 2013 at 5:25 PM

I would imagine Giambi would be the DH most days when Santana is catching? I can't see McGuiness being the full time DH.

benji_mon said... February 12, 2013 at 9:24 AM

I guess the Bourne signing answered my question about the DH dilemma.

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... February 12, 2013 at 9:38 AM

Sort of. Whoever is the better defender at 1B between Swisher and Reynolds could play there with the other playing mostly DH.

Anonymous said... February 12, 2013 at 11:46 AM

You're going to see Stubbs start in RF against left handers with Swisher moving to 1st and Reynolds to DH. Against righties you'll see Swisher in RF and a mix of Reynolds and Santana at first depending on the matchup. CLE has an versatile roster now and should be able to give guys plenty of rest.

Once they see how abysmal Stubbs is against righthanded pitchers Swisher will play 60% of the time in RF.

Carrera is out of options, has to have the edge over Rayburn - especially with so many spots needed to be opened for your other non40 man projections making the 25 man.

Anonymous said... February 18, 2013 at 8:51 PM

Brantley will not be platooning with anyone this year. Everyday player without question.

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... February 20, 2013 at 9:56 PM

If someone like Raburn is hitting, it will be hard to start Brantley and his career .620 OPS vs LHP's. Just a projection right now because we don't know if any of the right-handed hitting OF options will hit.

Anonymous said... February 25, 2013 at 12:48 PM

1. Brantley is absolutely an every day player
2. Raburn will make the team, Carrera will not
3. I'm not sure who has options left, but I'd be shocked to see Capps, Huff, and Albers make the team over Shaw, Allen, and Hill

Anonymous said... February 27, 2013 at 11:14 AM

Brantley looks like he'll hit 5th, with Santana and Reynolds following him. Huff and Albers may make the pen since they're out of options, but Allen is more likely to make the team than Capps. Kazmir is the favorite for the 5th slot now, with Carrasco and Bauer following him. Dice-K is a longshot at this point.

Matt MPB said... March 1, 2013 at 8:18 AM

Brantley did post a .680 OPS last year against lefties though. He is slowly improving against them. Better against them than Choo was. Brantley will not be platooned with. May get a breather against the toughest lefties but thats it.

Stubbs is the guy that will be platooned with if any OFer is. Really struggled against them last year.

Do think Raburn can make this club but may platoon more with Kipnis.

Matt MPB said... March 1, 2013 at 8:20 AM

Should say Stubbs really struggled against righties.

Anonymous said... March 1, 2013 at 6:40 PM

With Chris Perez ailing does this give Matt Capps a better change to make this club?

Matt MPB said... March 18, 2013 at 2:41 PM

Capps and Dice-K officially not making the club.

I think the roster listed here is what we will see (disagree on the platoons still though).

Matt MPB said... March 18, 2013 at 2:42 PM

Also think the batting order is wrong, though we'll see. Sounds like Brantley will be batting 5th and Santana 6th (according to Francona).

Anonymous said... March 22, 2013 at 6:29 AM

I don't think Giambi is making this club, they may go with an extra pitcher to start the year but even if they don't carry an extra they don't have enough players on the 40 man to cut to call up Raburn, Giambi, and Kazmir.

Matt MPB said... March 26, 2013 at 9:33 AM

Huff and Carrera will be gone and moving Herrmann to the 60 day DL opens enough 40 spots for Giambi, Raburn, and Kazmir. Plus McGuiness may be returned to Texas (Rule 5 guy), which would open yet another 40 man spot.
