they are going to resign ortiz soon. That is an awful idea if u ask me
i agree.
here is some ideas for transactions-
Sign mark Reynalds 2 yeard 25 million
Sign Shane Victorino 3 years 30 million
Resign Cody Ross 2 years 20 million
sign Joey Devine to a minor leauge deal
sign Scott Feldman to a minor leauge deal
sign Dallas Braden to a minor leauge deal
sign Don Kelly to a minor leauge deal
Sign Dan Haren for two or three years
Sweeney will make the team. He will platoon with Gones unless Sweeney is traded.
Sweeney, sands, Deaubront, De la Rosa cash Webster a PTBNL and Acevas for Kendry Morales. How does this deal sound?
Shouldn't kalish be making the team and platooning with gomes. Or somebody else would be platooning with Gomes
More likely to play everyday in the minors. Unless the Sox acquire another OF, I could see that as a possibility at some point. Kalish was a good prospect before all the injuries.
I have a hard time thinking that Daniel Bard is not a part of the 2013 bullpen for the Sox. I know it is just a projection, but he has to be in there.
why does he "have to" be in there? he needs to regain confidence and learn how to pitch again, not get thrown into a game and get booed like last year before he throws a pitch then walk a few guys give up a few hits and hit a few guys with his low velocity. no, he needs to develop. please answer the quetsion.
the final bullpen spot i think will come to Bard, carpenter, mortenson, wilson, acevas and huntzinger..... i wish they would trade acevas. i realize he is valuable becasue he can pitch in every role possible but he isnt needed. Do too his flexibility i think the sox could get something decent for him.
I think he has to be in there because he is more talented, out of the bullpen, then anybody else on that team. He had a rough year, no doubt, but he was used in the wrong spot. He has been very good in the past and think he will get every chance to prove he is still good.
Bailey and Uehara are locks. It makes sense to go with two lefties so Miller and Breslow are locks. Tazawa was their best reliever last year, albeit in lower pressure situations. I think they're committed to giving him a shot to pitch in high leverage situations this time around. That leaves two spots. Aceves is the most versatile, which makes him a better fit as the long reliever. Unless they go with 8 relievers, which we won't know until closer to the start of the season, one spot remains. For me, it's Melancon vs Bard. Should be a Spring Training battle. For a projection months before the season started, I'm going with Melancon, who at least pitched much better after getting sent to the minors and finished the season strong. Can't say the same about Bard.
With that said, he could still be their most talented reliever but didn't really show any signs of it in 2012.
Makes perfect sense to me. I think the 12th spot comes down to a battle between Aceves and Morales, with Bard in the pen. But it is hard to argue too strongly for Bard after last year. He was bad in the rotation and then he was much worse in relief late. I did not realize the splits until I just looked at them. Say this, if it were my team he would be on my roster. Just have to save up about $1.5 billion to make that happen.
Sox sign Steven Drew. I would this he will open the season as the utility infielder and backup plan if Iglesias does not work out.
why isnt Iglesias on the roster but gomez is?
For $9.5M, he's the starter, in my opinion. Iglesias goes back to AAA for regular at-bats before he takes over in 2014. Still has a long way to go with the bat.
I still think he will be up before Mauro Gomez because of his fielding ability. Why is Gomez on the roster??
Re: Gomez vs Iglesias
Iglesias needs regular at-bats. Still young. Still needs a lot of work with the bat. Gomez gives them some right-handed pop off the bench and a back-up at 1B for Napoli, who has never been a regular 1B.
Gomes will be platooning.
That was my guess when he signed, but with who? Did they give Gomes $5M/yr so he can platoon with Daniel Nava and have Nava getting the majority of AB's vs RHP? Not sure they're done.
I agree, that they probobly are not done but the projection is as of right now and as of right now I would think he would be platooning with Nava or Kalish. Enless they plan on working Ciriaco out in Left Field in the spring, which I doubt very much, to platoon with Gomes. Gomez still wont be on the roster though. Kalish has a better shot.
Why isn't Morales in the pen? He would make the team before Acevas.
I think the other 6 guys I have listed are locks, leaving Aceves and Morales and even guys like Mortensen and Bard vying for 1 spot, maybe 2 if they go with 8 relievers again. All those guys can easily be on plenty of big league rosters. Aceves and Bard should make close to $2M in arbitration, Morales a bit less. Something has to give. I like Aceves since he's the most versatile. Morales would have the most trade value as a guy who can set up or start.
We are going to be better than most are predicting us to be. Better clubhouse than last year for sure and hopefully Buchholz is #3 not #2. If he can only stay healthy for a full season he should win 14-15 games.
I hope you are right that we will be better than last year. And Jason- Morales is more likely to be on the roster. They both can pitch in any role plus Morales is a lefty and is just a better pitcher.
I think he will be, too. Just not sure how yet. I think Tazawa is probably the only guy with minor league options out of the group but he was really good last season. A trade is possible (Aceves? Breslow or Miller?) if they're completely healthy towards the end of Spring Training.
Acevas is who i hope will be on the move.
Hey, where's Napoli at?
Finally removed him after Red Sox GM Ben Cherington acknowledged that it wasn't close to being done. The 3-yr deal was agreed on in early December but hit a snag for some reason.
With Gomez at first, Sox do not come close to the playoffs
Don't think one player makes that much of a difference. Signing Napoli is still an option but he may only mean the difference of 3 wins. Not the difference between 'not coming close' and actually making the playoffs. I think they're pretty good, even with Mauro Gomez as their #8 hitter. I doubt he's their starting 1B on Opening Day, though.
Buchholz outlook this year?? He did better than most would know last year. After a HORRIBLE start to the year, Clay's combined ERA for June, July, August, and September was a mere 2.88 although his record didn't show it @ 7-5. In those 18 starts, he faced TOR 3x, TB 3x, ANA 2x, BALT 2x, MIA 2x, TEX, DET, CWS, CLV, SEA, and MIN. Slightly tougher than an average set of matchups but he did managed to miss NYY for 4 months! Hoping he can keep up that solid 4 month stretch with a better clubhouse this year. Boston simply has to score some more runs this year also to improve which I think they will. BOLD PREDICTION for Clay -- 16-7 this year. I think he will have a similar year to 2010 but not quite the overall stats as he did then. Higher ERA, maybe 3.59 but similar other stats. Boston should stay away from starting him in day games if at all possible --- he has a history of not doing well(consistent) in day starts vs night games.
Okay, so why isnt nava and Gomes listed as a platoon? Why is Victorino hitting second?
The Batting order should go:
Ellsbury CF
Pedroia 2B
Ortiz DH
Napoli 1B
Middlebrooks 3B
Gomes Vs LHP LF
Victorino RF
Saltalamaccia Vs RHP C
Drew ss
What, did they already announce their lineup? Send me some links with any relevant info if you can.
RONALD: I think that's a pretty good call. Don't think he'll ever match 2010 again but he's a pretty good bet to win 12-16 games, post a sub 3.80 ERA and give them 180+ innings if he's healthy.
Do you see Xander Bogaerts or Jackie Bradley Jr in 2013?
Bogaerts is moving quick but is still only 20 and ultimately might have to move off of SS. Sounds like mid-2014 is a possibility, in my opinion. I can see Bradley getting the call in 2013. Very polished player. Great plate discipline. Shouldn't be overmatched if they gave him a chance. Might take an injury to Ellsbury or Victorino for him to get the call earlier than mid-season.
signed FA Ben Klafczynski 09/12, converted RF to RHP, former teammate of Travis Shaw(Kent State), easy delivery, heavy fastball 2S works 91-93 and 4S works 92-96, topped at 98, 12-6 curve and changeup....interesting follow, great college offensive stats, Cubs never gave a chance to adjust(wood), converted in INDY ball, nice metrics, ran a 14 and 2/3 IP streak of no hit pitching.......bat missing power arm 70+
Carp will platoon with Gomes and Napoli
If Ortiz begins the season on the DL, then who will be the projected starting DH? and who will take that 25th man spot on the roster until he comes back?
I'd probably move Overbay to starting 1B and move Napoli to DH.
shouldnt Carp be listed as a 1B/ OF? and if Ortiz is on the DL to start the season, then wouldnt Carp and Overbay platoon? Overbay vs RHP and Carp vs LHP?
Forgot about Carp. I suppose it would be between he and Overbay if Ortiz starts on the DL. I could see a Carp or Overbay vs RHP and Mauro Gomez vs LHP.
As it looks like now, Ortiz's Opening Day status is in jeopardy. Is it out of the realm of possibility that Bradley starts the season as Boston's DH?
Bradley is a plus-defender in CF. So I'd say there's a chance, but JBJ would start in LF and Gomes would be the DH. Other options are Napoli and Overbay or Carp at DH/1B.
I see Bradley Jr making the club now and starting in LF with Ortiz out and his excellent spring. If he excels in Ortiz's absence then he is your LFer for the season and if he doesnt do well he can be optioned down.
John jenkins, romon ortiz and Brad lincoln could all be rotation depth in bostons organization. Who would the Jays want from boston for Lincoln?
With Ortiz assuredly starting the year on the DL and Nava a lock to make the team along with Gomes the real decision comes down to choosing 2 guys to make the team out of Overbay, Carp and JBJ.
My money is on Carp and JBJ, wouldn't you agree?
Carp yes. Bradley no only because if they wait to bring him up then they will get a full nother year of control over him before he goes to FA. I would have to say Sweeney.
Drew batting 3rd? Are you picking these out of a hat? There is no way that will ever happen. I have no respect/trust for anything on your site because of that.
There were no trends to speak of when I moved Ortiz to projected DL. Drew had batted 3rd in one the recent games so I went with that.
You're sensitive. There will be hundreds of thousands of people on here this month who love the site but disagree with several projections I make. They change daily. Just make a suggestion or leave a link and I'll get it right eventually.
