Hamilton would be a great addition this off-season. he could play Center Field and bat leadoff.

Hamilton would be a great fit on any team, but only on a 3-year deal. There may only 1-2 teams willing to give him 5-7 years and that's who is going to sign him. He'll hit 3rd or 4th on any team he signs with. Not leadoff.

Upton signed

Braves official website shows Blake DeWitt on the 40-man roster (seems like a waste of a roster spot to me) so he should be bold on the Braves 2013 off-season page.

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... December 7, 2012 at 10:26 AM

Waiting to hear back on if that's a mistake. Doesn't make sense to give him a big league deal. Everyone reported it was a minor league deal but may have been an assumption from the person who broke the news.

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... December 7, 2012 at 2:57 PM

Braves beat writer David O'Brien confirmed it is a minor league deal for DeWitt.

Anonymous said... December 12, 2012 at 3:15 AM

Yep, now DeWitt is no longer on the 40-man on the Braves site. Must have been a typo.

The Braves cant REALLY be relying on BJ Upton to leadoff this year can they? With Prado gone he is the only choice besides Simmons who I wouldn't want leading off either!

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... January 24, 2013 at 11:54 AM

Keith, I don't like a young kid with so little experience leading off either. But he's the only option and people in the game seem to love his ability and think he can handle it.

Jason - Sounds as though Brian McCann thinks he'll be in the opening day lineup. Not sure if that is enough for you to change your projected lineup, but if he is ready, I'll think it'll look like this: Simmons, Heyward, J Upton, Freeman, B Upton, McCann, Uggla, Francisco (v. L) and Johnson (v. R).

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... January 29, 2013 at 5:59 PM

Every injured player thinks he'll be ready much earlier than the norm for their particular injury. They all think they're going to recover quicker than expected and that rarely happens. Plus, teams will usually play it more safe than sorry early in the season. I usually stick with the initial prognosis that doesn't come from the actual player until I hear otherwise once Spring Training starts.

Fair enough

With Teheran gone, prior to Beachy's return, who would be the Braves 6th starter, to fill in in case of injury or wife having a baby or bereavement? I would guess Gilmartin or Rodriguez or maybe even Christhian Martinez in a swing role. I'd like to see the Braves sign one or two AAAA starting pitcher types on minor league deals, just for some more organizational depth. We know there will be injuries.

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... February 4, 2013 at 12:09 PM

I think they could use one more veteran type for AAA. As it stands, I think Martinez is the best bet for a spot start or two. Gilmartin would be next in line if they needed someone for an extended period of time.

Maybe claim Todd Redmond for depth, as the Reds have designated him for assignment?

Anonymous said... February 8, 2013 at 11:34 AM

They only have 37 on their 40 man.

Anonymous said... February 9, 2013 at 9:36 AM

Oh well, Redmond just scooped up by the Orioles.

And in addition to just 37 on the 40-man, the Braves can free up an added slot by moving Beachy to the 60-day DL, in case they need to make room. So they actually have room for 4 more players on the 40-man. May use one for Pagnozzi or Gattis if one needs to be on the roster at the start of the regular season if McCann is not ready to go.

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... February 9, 2013 at 4:46 PM

Yeah, they'll move Beachy to the 60-Day DL once the season starts. Don't know if they'll need the extra spot, though. They'll need to add the backup catcher and maybe one other player if they make a trade for any reason.

Anonymous said... February 28, 2013 at 11:25 AM

Note Elmer Reyes is also in big league camp. Has no shot at making the team, mainly is filler while Simmons is at the WBC.

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... February 28, 2013 at 3:21 PM

He's not on the NRI list. Are you sure he didn't just come over from minor league camp temporarily? It's pretty common.

Anonymous said... March 18, 2013 at 9:15 PM

Jason, amazing product. One thing though. Take Beachy for example. Says out, surgery, etc. All anyone wants to know that comes to these pages is the expected return date and that is the one very weak area here. No injuries say when the guy is returning. Is there a way to make that happen?

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... March 18, 2013 at 9:20 PM

I'll add more specific dates as the season closes in. With any pitcher coming back from Tommy John surgery, all you can pretty much is say 12-18 months. As they get closer, you can be more specific but setbacks are so common in the recovery that it's never exact. With that said, no one knows when Beachy will be ready to return. They can only hope sometime in the 2nd half.
