Cubs have said Vizcaino will be in Iowa as a starter to start the season. Won't be closer.
Cabrera too
I've seen the story that said they wanted to limit his innings but nothing on whether they're set on him being a starter. Can you send me a link or is that just something you've heard? It's more of a depth thing right now anyways. There are no reliable arms in the back of the bullpen and Vizcaino is the only one with closer potential.
they signed scott baker. why isnt he in the rotation?
Projected DL. Doubtful for start of season after Tommy John surgery in April.
cubs sign carlos Villinouava
um...there's also Chang-Yong Lim, who made a minor league contract.
I have him listed in the 'minor league free agents signed' section in the team's transactions. But he's recovering from Tommy John surgery and won't be ready to pitch until later in the season. In my opinion, there's no need to list him here.
darnell Macdonald and Lillibridge would make the team over Sappelt and Valbuena
Maybe in 2011. But both were terrible in 2012 and aren't on the 40-man roster. I wouldn't count them out, but it's a very arguable point.
u dont think travis wood will get a rotation spot huh? i dont see why tms r so harsh on him. between the cubs and cincy he has pitched well for a kid when givin the chance. why r tms so reluctant to give him the ball every 5th day and see what he can do over the coarse of a full season? i like what he brings to the table more then feldman, villanueva, and baker in my opinion.
Good to have the depth, in case of injury or in case they get an offer for Garza that they can't refuse. Wood is definitely a major league pitcher but Feldman and Villanueva weren't signed to those deals to be relievers. And when Baker comes back, one of them might have to move to the 'pen. So Wood might be 7th on the depth chart, right now.
What's the chances of winning it all this year?
They are much-improved, especially the pitching staff. Realistically, I say the chances are slim to none in 2013. After 61 wins, they'll be happy if they can get to .500. I don't think they have nearly enough offense to compete in the division yet. The Cardinals and Reds are still way ahead of the rest of the division, in my opinion.
I find it very interesting you hav Starlin Castro 5th in the order. Is it because of his lower walk rates that you don't project he will continue to hit in the top 2 spots in the order?
Castro hit 5th almost exclusively the second half of last season.
Chris, as Matthew already pointed out, that's where they hit him most towards the end of the season. It can always change but my guess is they keep him there to start 2013.
Thanks Matthew!
I don't see them wasting a spot with Clevenger as 3rd catcher/backup to Rizzo who will rarely sit. Probably will be Lillibridge so there's a right handed option behind Stewart. The lineup is probably the best it could be, but starting with 3 lefties could be bad in late innings.
I've been meaning to move Lillibridge into the lineup. Thanks for the reminder.
I hope Castro's power develops more this year. Still young, but I have a feeling it's on its way sooner rather than later. If not, then I see him being bumped back into the top 2 spots of the order. He hit a wall last year, which in part led to his drop to #5, but I don't see him staying there in '13 unless he beefs up and turns some of those doubles into round-trippers. My guess is that he will swap with Hairston/Nate.
What led to the Wood/Villy swap anyhow?
Bowden is out of options and finished the year strong, no reason to believe he wouldn't be claimed...he has to be the favorite to get the last spot over the Rule V pick as of now.
AJ,
Dale Sveum said Feldman and Wood were the favorites going into camp.
Jason,
Thanks. I don't think anyone can be ruled out, but it'd be surprising to me to not see Villa with a spot. I just can't decide who would lose out between Feldman & Wood. Maybe they roll with a 6-man rotation to start. Couldn't hurt to give Garza and company an extra day off here and there.
Garza will get plenty of days off...in fact, all of them -- until probably mid-May. Jason, you have the rotation correct by most all accounts.
The only thing I'd quibble with a little is most of us believe Dave Sappelt will get the OF bench spot over Brian Bogusevic. Sappelt bats right-handed, so he and Scott Hairston set up platoon options with the left-handed-hitting David DeJesus and Nate Schierholtz. Also, the Cubs acquired Sappelt in the Sean Marshall trade and probably want to maximize his value over Bogusevic, who is definitely having a great spring but is still likely a replacement-level guy.
