*MLBDepthCharts.com considers any player not on a team's 40-man roster, in AAA, or ranked as a top 10 prospect by Baseball America or top 11 prospect by Baseball Prospectus before the 2012 season as an 'under the radar' player.
Under the Radar Minor League NL Hitting Performance of the Week
season stats: .330 BA, 3 HR, 18 RBI, 5 2B, 3B, 16 BB, 20 K, 5 SB in 29 games (Lo-A) May 30-June 5: 11-for-16, 2 HR, 2 2B, 3B, 10 RBI
When fellow UTR writer Jim Brown prepares his pitching list each week, he runs the risk of a week’s worth of work being pushed aside by a last-day performance that vaults a new pitcher to the top of the list. My hitters this week, including my honorable mentions, did just that as several single game performances left me with a bottle neck full of hitters to choose from. My 2012 Cubs Breakout Player of the Year and Peoria outfielder Pin Chieh-Chen collected an amazing five walks on June 2nd while Bradenton Pirates first baseman Alex Dickerson had a game for the ages, going 5-for-6 with two home runs, six runs batted in and four runs scored on June 4th. But even though these types of line scores provide a boost, it is consistency that reigns supreme; which is where Rockies shortstop prospect Taylor Featherston comes in as this week’s 'Under the Radar' Hitter of the Week.
Featherston started off 2012 slowly with a combined April/May batting average of .225 after missing nearly a month with a lingering wrist injury suffered during spring training. However, a recent turnaround has seen the 22 year-old amass 19 hits in his last 39 at-bats, highlighted by four consecutive multi-hit games this past week. A three year starter for Texas Christian University, Featherston posted a career .331 batting average with 16 home runs, 122 runs batted in and 166 runs scored in 180 career collegiate games. The Rockies loved his size, athleticism, speed, gap power and bat-first skill set and made him their 5th round selection in 2011, even after drafting Irving, TX HS star shortstop Trevor Story four rounds earlier in the supplemental 1st round. Featherston will continue to share time with middle infield counterparts Story and recent UTR pick Samuel Mende until they decide that one of them is ready for the Hi-A Cal League.
Honorable Mentions C Ali Solis, Double-A San Antonio (SD): .311 BA, 4 HR, 22 RBI, 9 2B, 7 BB, 28 K in 37 games; 14-for-30, HR, 3 2B, 7 RBI in last week. IF/OF Dean Anna, Double-A San Antonio (SD): .307 BA, 5 HR, 21 RBI, 4 2B, 3B, 32 BB, 27 K, 2 SB in 51 games; 11-for-26, 3 HR, 2 2B, 8 RBI, 5 BB in last week.
