*MLBDepthCharts.com considers any player not on a team's 40-man roster, in AAA, or ranked as a top 10 prospect by Baseball America or top 11 prospect by Baseball Prospectus before the 2012 season as an 'under the radar' player.
Under the Radar Minor League NL Pitching Performance of the Week
RHP Gus Schlosser, Hi-A Lynchburg (ATL)
season stats: 3.95 ERA, 57 IP, 62 H, 10 BB, 44 K in 9 starts
May 16-May 22: 7 IP, ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 10 K in 1 start
One of the pleasant surprises in the area of under the radar prospects this season has been Schlosser. After a very impressive pro debut in 2011 with Rookie League Danville and Lo-A Rome, I tagged the 17th round pick out of Florida Southern College as one of my pre-season breakout picks as a relief pitcher. He started the 2012 season, not in the Lynchburg bullpen, but as the Opening Day starter for Lynchburg, throwing a career-high eight innings to earn a win. The 6'4" 220 lb right-hander trimmed a full run off his ERA this week with two stellar starts, including one where he pitched five plus innings of no-hit ball that ended with a career-high ten strikeouts over seven innings.
Schlosser has been rocked in earlier starts by surrendering too many hits (9.8 H/9), but has shown excellent control by a 6.9 K/9 and 1.6 BB/9 ratios. The 10 strikeouts from his May 20th start is an encouraging sign from the polished finesse-type pitcher. Its evident that he wont be overpowering hitters with his upper 80’s fastball, but the 23 year-old does has a funky ¾ arm slot that offers some deception. Lacking a plus-pitch, the Florida native also highlights a slider and an improved change-up. His continued success this season as a starter will be worth watching, as it will only add to his stock by showing his versatility that accompanies his 2011 success as a reliever.
Relief Pitcher of the Week
