I have had the good fortune of playing a role in the launch of MLBDepthCharts Magazine, especially with the newest feature called 'Prospect Corner'. With 6 levels, 18 different leagues and several hundred minor league teams, I have always found it difficult to track all of the top prospects throughout the season. I wanted one source where I could view the progress of these players in a simple format. I approached Jason last year with the idea of compiling an 'ultimate prospect list' based on some of the industry leaders in the prospect world.
My 'secret formula' for compiling a Top 100 list assigns points to prospects based on rankings from 13 different websites. For the upcoming edition that includes a Top 10 list for each organization, the same formula was used to rank prospects based on 17 different sources. More emphasis/weight is placed on on the lists of industry leaders, such as Kevin Goldstein (Baseball Prospectus), Baseball America, Jonathan Mayo (MLB.com) & Keith Law (ESPN).
Coming up with the list is only part of the process. There are so many great prospect rankings out there already. The value of our list is the added player info that is included and the three different ways they are sorted. Included in the first section, which sorts the players in order of ranking, is a player's age and date of birth, bats, throws, height, weight, position(s), ETA, 2011 Level, First Pro Contract (Draft Round, Signed as Amateur), and How acquired (if not with original team). The second section sorts the players by position and includes 2011 level and stats. The third section sorts the players by projected starting level in 2012.
During the season (regular season subscription info coming soon), we'l be sending out weekly updates on these 100 players and will occasionally be adding 'Players On the Rise' if a player proves deserving. By the end of the season, we expect to have 150-175 players on the list. Based on their numbers, you'll be able to get a good idea of which players will probably drop on the 2013 list and which players will rise. The Top 100 was sent out to subscribers yesterday. Screenshots are below. The individual Top 10 lists will be sent out next week.

I encourage you all to subscribe to the magazine (only $7.99 for the remainder of the offseason), then provide some feedback so this product can continually evolve and get better. I have some exciting projects in mind to go along with the Prospect Lists so look for those in Spring/Summer 2012. Feel free to contact me at mlbdepthchartsprospects@gmail.com. Thanks!
