Tyler Chatwood for Chris Iannetta

It's true that most trade rumors never end up happening. But it's probably not much of a surprise that Chris Iannetta ended up with the Angels, who had made it no secret that they wanted to find an upgrade at catcher. While they aren't particularly deep in starting pitching, they were willing to part with Tyler Chatwood knowing that they can probably sign another starting pitcher or two in the coming months. Here's a breakdown of how each roster is affected by the trade. You can vote at the bottom of the article on who you think got the better end of the deal.
Colorado Rockies
The Rockies had also reportedly shopped Iannetta at the trade deadline and are desperately trying to find some starting pitchers this offseason with Jorge De La Rosa (Tommy John surgery) and Juan Nicasio (neck injury) both unlikely for the start of the season. It appeared that the Rockies may have been trying to open a starting spot for talented 22 year-old Wilin Rosario, but that's not exactly the case. Veteran Ramon Hernandez has agreed to a two-year deal to be the starting catcher. He'll likely get the majority of playing time early on while Rosario is eased into the everyday job, possibly as early as late-2012. In fact, the Rockies could sign another catcher to back up Hernandez and allow Rosario to start the season in Triple-A. The 35 year-old Hernandez, who had a .788 OPS for Cincinnati last season while throwing out 37% of attempted base stealers, will reportedly make $3.2 million in 2012, about $400,000 less than Iannetta will make. The 28 year-old Iannetta had a .784 OPS and threw out 30% of attempted base stealers in 2011.

Former All-Stars Looking To Rebuild Value
posted 11/29/11 11:02 AM PST
by Jason Martinez
Former All-Stars Jonathan Broxton and Grady Sizemore have agreed to one-year deals with low base salaries as they try to rebuild their value before hitting free agency again next year. While both players reportedly had several suitors, it pales in comparison to the amount of interest they will receive after healthy and productive seasons in 2012.
Jonathan Broxton
Broxton's deal with the Kansas City Royals will pay him $4 million with another $1 million in incentives. As of now, he is penciled in as the setup man for closer Joakim Soria. The Royals still need to upgrade their rotation so there is a chance they shop Soria for a starter. Bullpen depth does not appear to be a problem for the Royals as Greg Holland, Tim Collins, Louis Coleman, and Kelvin Herrera give the team solid late-inning options behind Broxton and Soria. If they are going to move Soria, however, it might be a good idea to wait and see if Broxton's elbow is sound. The 27 year-old was shut down in early May with elbow pain and eventually underwent surgery to shave down a bone spur and remove loose bodies.

Best of 2012-13 Free Agent Class (Second Basemen)
posted 11/28/11 10:44 AM PST
by Jason Martinez
I've already taken a look at the best of the 2012-13 free agent pitchers, catchers, and corner infielders, now it's time to take a look at the top second basemen that could be available next offseason.
Second Basemen
Just like this year, Robinson Cano can become a free agent after the season but there is zero chance that the Yankees decline his $15 million club option. Ditto for Ian Kinsler, who has a $10 million club option with Texas. That is not the case for Brandon Phillips, unless the Reds can sign him to an extension before he hits free agency. The three-time Gold Glove winner will be one of the top free agents available and should get at least four years and $45 million on his next contract. Fortunately for Phillips, he'll still get paid as a player in his prime. He'll be 31 years old next summer and has hit .280 over the past six seasons while averaging 20 homers and 22 stolen bases over that span.

John Jaso for Josh Lueke
posted 11/28/11 8:14 AM PST
by Jason Martinez
Many teams have made catching depth a priority early this offseason as seven free agents have either re-signed with their 2011 team or signed with a new team. The Padres acquired a catcher, John Baker, via trade from Miami a few days ago and now Seattle has joined in on the act by acquiring left-handed hitting John Jaso from Tampa Bay for relief pitcher Josh Lueke and a player to be named later or cash considerations. Here's a breakdown of how each roster is affected by the trade. Be sure to vote at the bottom of the page on who you think got the better of the deal. Consider that the PTBNL will probably be a fringe prospect.
Seattle Mariners
If you're into home run power and a rifle throwing arm, then you're probably satisfied with Miguel Olivo as the team's starting catcher. The 33 year-old had 19 HR in 2011 and has thrown out 34% of attempted base stealers during his nine-year big league career. If you're into on-base percentage, however, then you probably hate Olivo (.279 career OBP) and like the acquisition of Jaso, who had a .372 OBP in 2010 before his production declined badly last season. Unlike Olivo, the 28 year-old Jaso lacks power and only threw out 17% of runners in 2011. But the left-handed hitter, who has 84 walks and 77 strikeouts in 595 career at-bats, would give the Mariners' lineup a much different look a few times per week.

John Baker for Wade LeBlanc
posted 11/22/11 10:29 PM PST
by Jason Martinez
The Miami Marlins have taken the first step towards improving their starting rotation depth by acquiring left-hander Wade LeBlanc from the San Diego Padres. In exchange, the Padres received catcher John Baker, who will serve as Nick Hundley's backup. Both teams appear to have filled important offseason needs. You can vote at the bottom of the article on who you think got the better end of the deal. Here's a breakdown of how each roster is affected by the trade:
Miami Marlins
When staff ace Josh Johnson went on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation back in May after making just nine starts, the lack of pitching depth in the farm system was exposed. Elih Villanueva made one unimpressive start. Same with Jay Buente. Clay Hensley had just one quality start (at least 6 IP and 3 ER or less allowed) in nine games after being moved to the rotation. He went back to the 'pen in early September. Rookie Brad Hand made the jump from Double-A and was predictably inconsistent in his 12 starts. Not surprisingly, the Marlins have made starting pitching a priority this offseason.

Three Projected Closers Who Could Start in 2012

Just to clarify, my offseason roster projections are based on the question, "If the season started today, what would the 25-man roster look like?" While there has been much talk of some very high-profile relievers making the move to the starting rotation in 2012, I don't feel comfortable penciling any of them in as starters until their teams can acquire enough bullpen depth and talent to replace them. Let's take a look at the three pitchers who have been discussed as rotation options.

Best of 2012-13 Free Agent Class (Corner Infielders)
posted 11/20/11 4:37 PM PST
by Jason Martinez
I examined the best of the 2012-13 free agent pitchers and catchers last week, now it's time to take a look at the top corner infielders that could be available next offseason. Unlike this year's group and unlike the potential free agent pitchers and catchers next year, there is a shortage of star power. Teams could take note and pursue the best corner infielders available now even that much more aggressively.
First Baseman
If Adam LaRoche stays healthy and has a big year, the Nationals (or whoever he plays for in 2012) will strongly consider exercising his half of a $10 million mutual option. Considering the lack of free agent options expected to be available, LaRoche may decline his half of the option and look for a better deal. He'll be 33 years old at the start of the 2013 season and has a career .815 OPS in 1032 career games.

40-Man Roster Additions
updated 11/18/11 9:30 PM PST
by Jason Martinez
Any minor league players who are not on their organization's 40-man roster and were either signed at age 19 or older and have been in the organization for four years or were signed at age 18 or younger and have been in the organization for five years are eligible for selection in the Rule V Draft, which is to be held on December 8th. Today is the deadline for teams to protect players by adding them to the 40-man roster. Here is a list of the players, including 2011 stats, that have been added since the end of the regular season and any added today. This page will remain updated.
For subscribers to the Free Trial of MLBDepthCharts Magazine, I'll be sending out a printer-friendly list with 2011 stats sometime this weekend.

Best of 2012-13 Free Agent Class (Catchers)
posted 11/17/11 10:09 AM PST
by Jason Martinez
I examined the best of the 2012-13 free agent pitchers a few days ago, now it's time to take a look at the top catchers that could be available next offseason.
Catchers
While there are mostly backups in this year's free agent class, some of the top catchers in baseball could be on the market next year. Yadier Molina would be the biggest name if the Cardinals aren't able to sign him to an extension before free agency begins. One of the better defensive catchers of this era, the 29 year-old also posted a career-high .814 OPS in 2011. Another offensive performance like that and he'll easily score a long-term deal in the $10-15 million per year range. Molina already has four Gold Glove awards, three All-Star selections, and two World Series Championships on his resume.

I examined the best of the 2012-13 free agent pitchers a few days ago, now it's time to take a look at the top catchers that could be available next offseason.

Best of the 2012-13 Free Agent Class (Pitchers)
posted 11/14/11 11:54 AM PST
by Jason Martinez
Free agents Prince Fielder, Albert Pujols, Jose Reyes, and C.J. Wilson are set to become some of the richest baseball players in the world sometime this offseason. A few players who would've been part of next year's class of free agents have already been paid or will be paid before they can reach free agency. One of the best starting pitchers, Jered Weaver, was scratched off of the list when he signed a five-year, $85M extension with the Angels back in August. The best position player, center fielder Matt Kemp, has reportedly agreed to an eight-year, $160M deal with the Dodgers. So who will be the poster boys for free agency in 2012-13? Let's start with the pitchers.

The Free Agent Market for Closers
posted 11/9/11 10:45 AM PST
by Jason Martinez
Last night, it was reported that Ryan Madson was close to re-signing in Philadelphia for four years and $44 million, pending approval from team CEO David Montgomery. Today, that deal has not been finalized and is not expected to get done today. While there aren't too many other options for the Phillies, it wouldn't be a surprise if the Phillies are re-considering paying Madson that much money over that amount of years. The 31 year-old is probably the second best choice on the free agent market after Jonathan Papelbon, who could be an option for the Phillies if the deal with Madson doesn't get done. As a number of teams will be looking for someone to close out games for them in 2012, let's take a look at who's available and which teams could use the help. Current in-house options are listed below the name of the teams in need.
Subscribers to the Free Trial of MLBDepthCharts Magazine will receive the first 'Closer Report' tomorrow, which includes a list of each team's projected closer with 2011 stats, 2012 salary, contract terms, service time, and age. The potential closers available on the free agent market are also included on the report with 2011 stats, age, Elias Ranking, and FanGraphs.com's Free Agent Ranking. Is Jose Reyes a fit with the Marlins?

If you've been paying attention to the rumor mill, the soon-to-be renamed Miami Marlins are reportedly interested in just about every big name on the free agent market. In fact, the word on the street is that they contacted shortstop Jose Reyes' agent to express their interest the minute the free agency period began. The 28 year-old Reyes, who has spent his first nine big league seasons with the New York Mets, should command at least a five-year, $75M contract and could get six or seven years and over $100M when it's all said and done. The Brewers, Nationals, and Tigers are among the teams expected to have strong interest. The Marlins, however, are set to meet with Reyes tomorrow, according to SI.com's Jon Heyman.

Melky Cabrera for Jonathan Sanchez
posted 11/7/11 1:45 PM PST
by Jason Martinez
The Kansas City Royals, a team that could probably compete in the AL Central in 2012 if they can upgrade their starting rotation this offseason, have acquired left-hander Jonathan Sanchez from the San Francisco Giants for outfielder Melky Cabrera. Left-handed starter Ryan Verdugo, who had a 4.35 ERA in 25 starts for Double-A Richmond, was also sent to Kansas City in the deal. Here's a breakdown of how each roster is affected by the trade:
San Francisco Giants
Cabrera, 27, is under contract for one more season and is projected to make $4.4M in arbitration next season, according to Tim Dierkes of MLBTradeRumors.com. After a subpar season in 2010 when he hit .255 with 4 HR, 27 2B, and 7 SB for Atlanta, the switch-hitter rebounded after signing with Kansas City last offseason by setting career-highs in just about every category across the board, including batting average (.305), HR (18), 2B (44), RBI (87), and SB (20). Even a slight decrease in production should be enough to boost a Giants offense that struggled badly for most of the 2011 season. Considered a below-average outfielder (-8.6 UZR in '11), his lack of range in center field could be a problem in the NL West, which is known for it's spacious outfields.

New General Manager Offseason Tracker
posted 11/7/11 10:35 AM PST Updated 1/23/12
by Jason Martinez
The story early in the offseason hasn't been free agency or trades. Those will come soon enough. The offseason drama has revolved around five teams (six teams as of today-see below) that needed to fill General Manager openings, including two that were created by the resignation of Theo Epstein in Boston. The 37 year-old, who helped the Red Sox to two World Series titles during his tenure, was hired as the President of Operations for the Chicago Cubs. Vice-President/Assistant GM Ben Cherington, Epstein's right-hand man in Boston, was promoted to be the Red Sox GM. Epstein then hired Jed Hoyer, his Assistant GM in Boston before Cherington, to be the new Cubs GM.
Hoyer's departure from San Diego, where he served two years as their GM, allowed Padres owner Jeff Moorad to promote Josh Byrnes to the GM post. It marked the second time Moorad has hired Byrnes as a GM. Byrnes was named the Diamondbacks GM in 2005 when Moorad was their CEO, given an eight-year contract extension by Moorad in February 2008, and was then fired in July 2010 after Moorad had already left for San Diego.
Believe it or not, the GM drama didn't stop there. The Angels, while watching former catcher Mike Napoli put together an unbelievable post-season after a terrific regular season, reassigned GM Tony Reagins after he resigned from his position. It appears that he was forced to step down and the timing of the move put the focus on the offseason deal that sent Napoli and Juan Rivera to Toronto for Vernon Wells, who was one of the least productive hitters in baseball in 2011 and is still owed over $60M through 2014. The Angels have replaced Reagins with Jerry DiPoto, who served as the Diamondbacks' interim GM after Byrnes was fired in mid-2010 until Kevin Towers was hired a few months later.
Lastly, the Orioles finally have a new GM in place after a long search in which top candidate DiPoto accepted the Angels' job and another, Blue Jays Assistant GM Tony La Cava, turned down the job. Multiple other candidates turned down interviews and it wasn't until this past weekend that the team hired former Expos and Red Sox GM Dan Duquette. It was Duquette who acquired many of the key Red Sox players that went on to win the World Series in 2004. To complete the amazing circle of GM hires over the last month, I'll point out that it was Epstein who succeeded Duquette in Boston.
•UPDATE 11/7/11 3:15 PM PST - Add the Twins to the list after they fired GM Bill Smith today and replaced him with former GM Terry Ryan, who stepped down from the position in 2007 after 13 years. Smith, who was Ryan's right-hand man at the time, took over before the 2008 season. After consecutive division titles in 2009-10, the team lost 99 games.
•UPDATE 12/10/11 7:45 AM PST - The Astros recently hired Jeff Luhnow as their new GM, after Ed Wade was fired at the end of November. Luhnow was previously the Cardinals' Vice President of Scouting and Player Development. His hiring was announced on Wednesday evening (December 7th) but I'll track his roster moves as of December 9th. The Rule V Draft was conducted on December 8th but it's uncertain how much input he had in that process.
All caught up? Good. I'll keep track of every player move made by the new GM's and we'll revisit them later in the offseason and again during the season.

Who Doesn't Need Starting Pitching?
vposted 11/4/11 10:52 AM PST
by Jason Martinez
Teams can never have enough starting pitching. Rarely do they make it through an entire season without using 7 or 8 starting pitchers. The World Champion Cardinals lost co-ace Adam Wainwright before the season to Tommy John surgery and then used eight different starting pitchers during the regular season. There are a few teams, however, that are in much better shape than others and can place starting pitching at the bottom of their priority list this offseason.
Tampa Bay Rays: Not only do they have seven starting pitchers on their roster that have had big league success, four of them are legitimate top-of-the-rotation arms. The quartet of David Price, James Shields, Jeremy Hellickson, and Matt Moore are potentially 1990's-era Atlanta Braves good. Two of Wade Davis, Jeff Niemann, and Alex Cobb are odd men out at the moment, which is an incredibly good problem to have. The Rays can focus their energy this offseason on improving their offense and adding another reliever or two.
