'Under the Radar' NL Minor League Pitching Performance of the Week (August 24 - August 30)

*MLBDepthCharts.com considers any player not on a team's 40-man roster, in AAA, or ranked as a top 10 prospect by Baseball America or top 11 prospect by Baseball Prospectus before the 2010 season as an 'under the radar' player.

Under the Radar Minor League NL Pitching Performance of the Week
LHP Tony Cingrani, Rookie Level Billings (CIN)

season stats: 1.56 ERA, 40.1 IP, 25 H, 5 BB, 66 K in 11 starts
August 24-August 30: 6 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 BB, 13 K in 1 start

Sadly, the minor league season is coming to an end. With a partial schedule slated for the coming week, this is my last UTR selection of the 2011 season. As summer winds down, I will also be making a transition by trading in the keyboard for headsets as I take to the airwaves covering high school football in the county. But before I begin occupying area press boxes, I need to feel the excitement, one more time, in seeing who will be the last UTR of the season. It’s a euphoria that is only matched by finding that first top performance way back in April. Reflecting for a moment, 2011 was a season filled with many solid performances by pitchers that never made this feature. In fact, to cap-off the UTR season, I will provide a list of pitchers next week that were “oh-so-close”. One of those pitchers missed out again this week, so you will have to tune in next Wednesday to see if it might be one of your favorites.

The last full week had some pitchers saving their best for last. One pitcher in particular heard that phrase many times during his stint in the bullpen at Rice this past spring. Cingrani captures the 'UTR' crown for the second time in three weeks and the only repeat selection this season. His best didn’t need to come at the end of the season, as Cingrani has been outstanding since joining the Reds as a 3rd round pick in this year’s draft. If you have followed any one of my picks this year, you may have noticed that most pitchers have suffered a horrible outing their next time out after being named UTR for the week. A UTR jinx perhaps? Not with Cingrani, who hasn't given up more than 1 earned run over his last 7 starts. The 22-year-old lefty has pitched 23 innings in August, allowing just 3 earned runs while striking out 44 strikeouts and walking three batters. His best came on August 27th when he fanned 13 batters over six hitless innings, facing one over the minimum (an error) in getting his first pro win.

Cingrani didn’t have much success as a starter in junior college and later at Rice, but things changed when he was thrust into the closer’s role with the Owls where he tied the school record of 12 saves in 2010. He spent time building up his mechanics by strengthening his lower body and getting his legs in-sync with his arms. The 6'4" lefty has a lanky arm action that supports his mid-90’s fastball in deceiving hitters with how quickly the ball reaches the zone. He needs improvement, however, on his secondary pitches, a 1-to-7 slider and an average change-up. Now that the excitement is over, its time to feel the lows of disappointment in not seeing Cingrani’s name on an Arizona Fall League roster.

Relief Pitcher of the Week
RHP Logan Bawcom, Hi-A Rancho Cucamonga (LAD): 3.25 ERA, 63.2 IP, 49 H, 27 BB, 79 K, 29 Sv in 49 appearances (HiA/LoA); 3 IP, 0 ER, H, 2 BB, 5 K, 2 Sv in 3 appearances over the past week

'Under the Radar' NL Minor League Hitting Performance of the Week (August 24 - August 30)

*MLBDepthCharts.com considers any player not on a team's 40-man roster, in AAA, or ranked as a top 10 prospect by Baseball America or top 11 prospect by Baseball Prospectus before the 2011 season as an 'under the radar' player.

Under the Radar Minor League NL Hitting Performance of the Week
2B David Nick, Hi-A Visalia (ARI)

season stats: .304 BA, 13 HR, 66 RBI, 32 2B, 5 3B, 29 BB, 77 K, 5 SB in 126 games
August 24-August 30: 14-for-25, 2 HR, 10 RBI, 3 2B, 3B

Although I’m not big into clichés, a particular phrase clearly came to mind while narrowing down my choice for hitter of the week: killing two birds with one stone. When the Diamondbacks sent Kelly Johnson to the Blue Jays for Aaron Hill and John McDonald, they improved their team  and acquired two players who are set to become free agents after the season. This move could very well hint that the D-backs have a lot of faith in some of their up-and-coming middle infielders, including this week’s 'UTR' pick. If Nick’s name sounds familiar, it’s because the 21 yr old Cypress, CA native was my choice as the 2011 Diamondbacks pre-season 'Breakout Candidate'.  The 6'2" second baseman has provided solid production at each level, especially for a hitter much younger than his average competition.

Nick was off to a decent start this season with Visalia but once the summer heat of July and August took off, so did the ball off of his bat. The tenacious hitter has a .327 BA with 7 HR, 18 2B, 4 3B, and 36 RBI in the second half.  His torrid pace has continued as he rapped out 14 hits in the last week, including multi-hit games in five of his last six contests highlighted by a 4-for-5 performance on August 28th in which he knocked in four runs and fell a double shy of a cycle. With the surprise lead in the NL West and two middle infielders off the books in 2012, Arizona has killed two birds with one stone in providing fans with a winning product and clearing a path for one of their most promising youngsters. With polished plate discipline, Nick could position himself for an aggressive push towards a late-2012 big league debut and a possible starting job sometime in 2013.

Honorable Mentions
1B Mark Tracy, Lo-A Asheville (COL): .261 BA, 9 HR, 54 RBI, 20 2B, 19 BB, 117 K, 4 SB in 76 games; 13-for-33, 4 HR, 16 RBI, 4 2B in last week
OF Joc Pederson, Rookie Level Ogden (LAD): .350 BA, 11 HR, 59 RBI, 17 2B, 3B, 31 BB, 51 K, 21 SB in 61 games; 11-for-25, 2 HR, 11 RBI, 2 2B, 3 BB in last week

Updated Minor League Team Pages

by Jason Martinez

While the MLBDepthCharts major league team pages are usually updated on an almost up-to-the-minute basis, the minor league pages often get less attention. If a notable prospect is promoted, demoted, injured, or traded, that is normally reflected on the rosters right away. However, it is difficult to find time to take a look at an entire team roster and update it based on lineup trends and pitching staff roles or players being shuffled between levels and the 7-Day Disabled List. With the deadline to sign 2011 draftees finally behind us, I'll be making an effort to get the pages as updated and accurate as possible. When I'm done with a particular team, I'll be letting you know on Twitter and right here on the site.

Under the Radar Minor League NL Pitching Performance of the Week

season stats: 6.21 ERA, 116 IP, 152 H, 32 BB, 76 K in 24 appearances, 18 starts (HiA/AA)
August 17-August 23: 6.1 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 0 BB, 12 K in 1 start

The earth shook yesterday in my corner of the U.S. as we felt the tremors from the quake that reverberated from somewhere in rural Virginia. It shook again last night as the gritty and gutsy kids from neighboring Clinton County (Keystone Little League) pulled off a big win to advance to the U.S semi-final in Williamsport. All this shaking has caused me to go against the grain when making my selection this week. While Robinson's overall stats for the season have a lot to be desired, his performance this week could not be ignored. Last year's 12th Round pick out of Georgia Tech struck out a career-high 12 batters over 6.1 scoreless innings while allowing only three hits and no walks. He had already surrendered 80 earned runs in 116 innings pitched which makes his performance even that much more spectacular.

My first order of business this week is to congratulate the Mid-Atlantic Little Leaguers of Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. Having once been a resident of Lock Haven, Keystone's success is very well-deserved for a community extremely proud of its history, heritage and even more of its many local sports teams. So hats off to all of the players, coaches and most of all, the parents who have dedicated their time and endless energy into these kids who are very worthy of such great success.

With approximately six weeks remaining in the major league season, the majority of teams are starting to go through their 'evaluation' stage. Teams staring up at the eventual division winners are examining their payroll while starting to decide on who may or may not return in 2012. The Dodgers currently sit alone in last place with the San Diego Padres a 0.001 percentage point ahead of them in the NL West. For a club with a payroll well over $100 million in 2011, the Dodgers find themselves sitting beneath the weight of unsettled ownership. Even with several high profile contracts set to come off the books in 2012, pinching pennies may be top priority. The Dodgers, however, have always been regarded as having a farm system deep with talent and a history of scouting/draft success. While pitching has always being the signature of the system, several hitters are trying to sway that focus away from the mound. Silverio, an international signee out of the Dominican Republic at 16 yrs old back in 2003, is at the top of that list.

My UTR-mate Marc Hefferan and I had our annual baseball outing this past weekend. It's a great time spent talking about our past UTR picks and those who almost made the list, all the while watching some minor league ball. Discussions during our first game at Double-Altoona were all about the performances of this week and who was leading the pack. I stated that I might have my choice already in the bag, when LHP Michael Strong (Rookie Level Helena Brewers) struck out 13 hitters on August 9th. Marc stated that "it's not over until it's over", a creed that we hoped to see true after watching ex-MLB'er Oliver Perez serve up a grand slam in the first inning at our second game at Double-A Harrisburg. Side note…we were there to see #1 prospect Bryce Harper. It was over for the Senators, as they couldn’t overcome the early 4-run deficit with Harper going 0-for-3. It was also over for Strong, as he couldn’t string together two quality starts to make the UTR. Strangely, it was the pitcher who opposed Strong on August 9th that would end up earning the UTR honors for the week.

Three years ago when the ‘Under the Radar’ feature was instituted, we at MLBDepthCharts wanted to make sure that the players chosen each week fell under a particular set of criteria. We created a code that challenged us to make fresh choices ensuring that the 'Under the Radar' principle would stand the test of time. This code has helped springboard UTR’s success in discovering players that are clearly on the rise. However, we also know of loopholes in which players can fall through. We set the criteria based on pre-season forecasts, but once an influx of new draftees invade a system it becomes a chance for us to highlight players before the window closes in on those who could quite possibly find themselves on top of their organizational prospect lists. I feel this could very well be the case with Panik, this week’s UTR pick.

Knocking Down the Door - August 16, 2011

*Players who may be on the verge of a big league call-up are considered to be 'Knocking Down the Door'. Click HERE for the 2011 archive.

Trevor Bauer, RHP - Double-A Mobile (ARI): I did have Triple-A lefty Wade Miley on this list initially after his spectacular performance a few days ago (9 IP, ER, 3 H, BB, 9 K, retired 22 hitters in a row) but he doesn't qualify anymore since it's already been reported that he'll take Jason Marquis' rotation spot. The fact that Bauer's name was also in the conversation to join the rotation of the 1st place Diamondbacks should be ridiculous considering that he was in college at UCLA just a few months ago. But it's simply not the case for the 20 year-old, who is on the fast track to Arizona after striking out 25 hitters in his first 14 minor league innings with only five walks. His Double-A debut on Sunday was impressive, to say the least, as he shutout Mississippi (ATL) through five innings while striking out eight. Whether he gets a few starts down the stretch or gets a chance to pitch in relief, it's a good bet that Bauer will see the big leagues in 2011.

FANTASY PERSPECTIVE: Baseball Bro'mance - Wrigley Bleachers and Fenway Monster

posted 8/12/11 10:48 AM PST
by Warren 'Dan' Bogard

Last weekend has had a big asterisk by it on my calendar since early May. Soon after a “save the date” went out for a friend’s Chicago wedding, one of my esteemed friends hatched a brilliant plot: fly in a day early and catch the Friday afternoon Reds-Cubs game from the Wrigley bleachers. The prototype design for six of us to go was quickly leaked to the wedding party and the groom, and soon our confirmed group of bleacher butts ballooned from half a dozen to no less than thirty souls. The bride, a fine Chicago native, was kind enough to accommodate the plans, even going so far as to adjust the schedule for the rehearsal dinner. Her only condition was that the groom and wedding party generously apply sunscreen before and during the game (confirming again - she’s definitely a keeper). Among this parade of out-of-towners were ten of twelve fantasy baseball managers from one of my custom, long-standing fantasy leagues. More on Wrigley in a minute.

Fast forward to Sunday afternoon. After sweating multiple delays at Chicago O’Hare, my wife and I finally touched down in Boston and dialed up another friend and college baseball teammate, Nick, who was recently in on the train from New York. “We’re on the ground. Harvard Square? We’ll pick you up in twenty minutes in front of Dewey, Cheatem & Howe.” Nick and I had long standing plans for that Sunday night. If we hustled, we could still catch the bus early enough to get to Fenway and claim prime standing room seats atop the Green Monster for the Red Sox-Yankees game.

Hundreds of articles have been written comparing Wrigley and Fenway. It’s one of those conversations in baseball lore that comes up often. However, unlike debates of Cobb vs. Williams, Aaron & Ruth vs. Bonds, or Pedro vs. Maddux, Wrigley and Fenway exist in living history - and they can be sensed and shared with your fantasy baseball brethren. Let me share with you a story about two great ballpark experiences and the people who help bring these stadiums to life.

Simon Castro, RHP - Double-A San Antonio (SD): Going into this past offseason, most people would've guessed that Castro would be in San Diego by now. An impressive Double-A debut in 2010, in which he posted a 2.92 ERA, 129.2 IP, 107 H, 36 BB, and 107 K, put the 6'5" right-hander near the top of the organization as the Padres' best pitching prospect. A friend of mine is convinced that Carl Crawford is the greatest athlete alive. He also persuasively argues that Nebraska football (“Go Big Red!”) is the greatest sports organization on the planet, rivaled perhaps only by the San Antonio Spurs. I think he still dreams of what could have been if Crawford had pursued a college football career running the option with the Huskers instead of professional baseball. Like many sports generalists, my friend is quickly shifting his focus to other sports as the fall approaches. Nonsense! Now is fantasy baseball season!

Knocking Down the Door - August 2, 2011

*Players who may be on the verge of a big league call-up are considered to be 'Knocking Down the Door'.

Mike Baxter, 1B/OF - Triple-A Buffalo (NYM): The 26 year-old hasn't wasted any time proving himself to his new team. After 'knocking down the door' last September with an outstanding Triple-A season (.301 BA, 18 HR, 72 RBI, 30 2B, 10 3B, 58 BB, 22 SB), Baxter underwent thumb surgery this spring and wasn't officially activated from the 60-Day DL until the Padres tried to slip him through waivers last month.

Over in the East, the Red Sox once again established themselves as the frontrunners in the American League with a 20-win month, gaining 4.5 games and the division lead from the Wildcard-leading Yankees. The Rangers and Angels, who won 18 and 17 games, respectively, are going to fight it out until the end in the AL West while the AL Central, like the NL Central, is a four-team race with the Twins hanging around after a 16-win month.

While the Diamondbacks and Giants held their ground with 15-11 records in the month of July, the other three teams in the division continued to sink further out of the picture. In the NL Central, it's still a four-team race but it was the 1st Place Brewers who took control by winning 16 games in the month and gaining 2.5 games on the Cardinals and Pirates, who each finished at 13-13. Meanwhile, it's a case of too little, too late for the Marlins, who went 17-10 in the month but are still 15.5 games behind 1st place Philadelphia and 9 games behind the Wildcard-leading Braves.
