FANTASY PERSPECTIVE: Sneaky Good
by Warren 'Dan' Bogard
It’s good to get in the habit of checking the list of top fantasy producers over the last 30 days. While it’s great to be dialed in to daily production and two-week production, it usually takes longer sustained performance for fantasy values to really shift. If a player sticks among the leaders for a 30-day window, you can bet that player is fantasy relevant. Let’s take a look at some surprising players who have been sneaky good this last month.

Relievers on the Rise - June 28, 2011
by Jason Martinez
RELIEVERS ON THE RISE
Javy Guerra, RHP - Los Angeles Dodgers: The Dodgers have lost so many of their top relievers to injury - Jonathan Broxton, Hong-Chih Kuo, Vicente Padilla, Kenley Jansen, Blake Hawksworth - it's not surprising that they are just 36-44 while using 15 different pitchers in relief this season. Now that Kuo, Jansen, and Hawksworth have returned, Guerra remains on the team because he's managed to take advantage of his opportunity after being recalled from Double-A in mid-May.

Knocking Down the Door (Pitchers) - June 27, 2011
by Jason Martinez
*Players who may be on the verge of a big league call-up are considered to be 'Knocking Down the Door'.
Bradley Boxberger, RHP - Double-A Carolina (CIN): After a solid pro debut for Hi-A Lynchburg in 2010 (3.14 ERA, 62 IP, 57 H, 20 BB, 70 K in 14 games, 13 starts), Boxberger was promoted to Double-A mid-season and moved to the bullpen. Although the results were ugly (8.49 ERA in 22 relief appearances), the Reds kept the former 1st Round pick in a relief role this year and it's paying off.

Knocking Down the Door (Position Players) - June 27, 2011
by Jason Martinez
*Players who may be on the verge of a big league call-up are considered to be 'Knocking Down the Door'.
Mat Gamel, 1B - Triple-A Nashville (MIL): If Gamel was still a third baseman, he could've very well been in Milwaukee weeks ago with starter Casey McGehee hitting just .227 with 4 HR in 77 games. Instead, he's been playing first base this year in anticipation of Prince Fielder leaving as a free agent after the season.

FANTASY PERSPECTIVE: Oldies but Goodies
by Warren 'Dan' Bogard
Earlier this week, Wily Mo Peña joined the Arizona Diamondbacks, and he homered in his second at-bat. I’ve written before about how Wily has been tearing up the Pacific Coast League at the age of 29; he’s a player that I am cheering for even though it’s unlikely that he will be fantasy relevant for the remainder of the year. WMP’s promotion got me thinking about some other excellent producers from yester-year, so I thought it might be fun to jump in the way-back-machine and revisit some producers of the future passed.

Under the Radar Minor League NL Hitting Performances of the 1st Half
It’s difficult to fathom that we’re already heading into Week 11 of the UTR feature. If leagues are not already engaged in the All-Star festivities, balloting is coming to a close and the league’s top hitting and pitching selections will soon be heading off to meet up with their temporary teammates.

*Players who may be on the verge of a big league call-up are considered to be 'Knocking Down the Door'.
Scott Barnes, LHP - Triple-A Columbus (CLE): Not only are the Indians having a terrific season as they're still holding on to a one-game lead in the AL Central, their Triple-A team has been every bit as impressive. At 49-23, they're easily the best team in the International League and have as deep a team as any in the upper minors.

*Players who may be on the verge of a big league call-up are considered to be 'Knocking Down the Door'.
Kyle Blanks, 1B/OF - Triple-A Tucson (SD): When Blanks debuted with the team in 2009 and ended up hitting 10 HR in a 32-game span before an injury ended his season, it was assumed Blanks was in the big leagues for good. But a slow start in 2010 followed by Tommy John surgery pushed him all the way back to the Double-A Texas League in 2011, a league in which he dominated back in 2008.

FANTASY PERSPECTIVE: Streaming Beauties
by Warren 'Dan' Bogard
Let me just start by saying it’s been a weird week. Saturday night, I ignored a downpour in Boston and went out with some friends to check out an Irish bar that was new to us in Jamaica Plain. We walked in to find no less than five four-legged tail-wagging friends inside to greet us. I was literally seeing dogs in the bar – and I hadn’t even had a drink. No, the dogs weren’t playing poker, but it was a fun and unexpected way to kick off a memorable night. I awoke the next morning and checked out my Twitter account to find that I had a 14th follower.

Relievers on the Rise - June 14, 2011
by Jason Martinez
RELIEVERS ON THE RISE
Luis Ayala, RHP - New York Yankees: The Yankees still employ Mariano Rivera, one of the best closers in the game, and a very good 8th inning setup man in David Robertson. But with Joba Chamberlain (Tommy John surgery) out of the year and Rafael Soriano shut down indefinitely with elbow soreness, it's anybody's guess who is the 7th inning setup man.

Knocking Down the Door (Pitchers) - June 13, 2011
by Jason Martinez
*Players who may be on the verge of a big league call-up are considered to be 'Knocking Down the Door'.
Jeanmar Gomez, RHP - Triple-A Columbus (CLE): While he wasn't terrible in four appearances (three starts) for the Indians earlier this season, Gomez wasn't especially good either. He allowed 10 ER and 28 hits in 18.1 IP which comes out to a 4.91 ERA and .341 opponent's batting average.
Knocking Down the Door (Position Players) - June 13, 2011
by Jason Martinez
*Players who may be on the verge of a big league call-up are considered to be 'Knocking Down the Door'.
Collin Cowgill, OF - Triple-A Reno (ARI): The path to a big league job in Arizona is not necessarily wide open in Arizona but Cowgill's recent performance likely has the Diamondbacks at least considering how to make room. The 25 year-old has 22 hits in his last 43 at-bats to raise his average .369 on the season. He's also showing some pop for a little guy (Cowgill is 5'9") with 11 HR, 15 2B, and 5 3B to go along with 41 RBI, 19 SB, and 28 BB.

Losing Your Grip - June 9, 2011
by Jason Martinez
*Players at risk of being demoted from their current big league role. Click HERE for the 'Losing Your Grip' Archive.
Jason Bay, OF (NYM): The 66-million dollar man is in an 0-for-23 slump and he's hitting .207 with 2 HR and 39 strikeouts in 39 games. Can't give up on the 32 year-old because he's under contract through 2013 and there's also a vesting option for 2014 that kicks in with 500 PA's in 2012-13 or 600 PA's in 2013.

FANTASY PERSPECTIVE: Fast Five
by Warren 'Dan' Bogard
Here are five MLB line-up happenings that I am keeping an eye on and that have the potential to dramatically shift fantasy player value.
#1: Freddie Freeman moves up
21-year-old Frederick Charles Freeman (24% owned) is starting to get some at bats in the heart of the Atlanta line-up. With a slumping Dan Uggla (89% owned) sliding to the seven spot and Jason Heyward (93% owned) on the DL with shoulder pain and no timetable for return, Freeman is now hitting fifth regularly.

by Jason Martinez
RELIEVERS ON THE RISE
Bill Bray, LHP - Cincinnati Reds: Without Aroldis Chapman, who has been on the disabled list since mid-May and ineffective for the previous two weeks, Bray has been thrust into the role of primary lefty reliever. And he has been up to the challenge by posting a 1.69 ERA.

Knocking Down the Door (Pitchers) - June 7, 2011
by Jason Martinez
*Players who may be on the verge of a big league call-up are considered to be 'Knocking Down the Door'.
Brian Gordon, RHP - Triple-A Lehigh Valley (PHI): Kyle Kendrick, the current 5th starter for the Phillies, is considered to be a short-term solution. Whether he's filling in until Joe Blanton returns from the disabled list or until the team feels comfortable enough going with a youngster like Vance Worley is unclear. What is clear is that the 32 year-old Gordon is deserving of a big league opportunity.

by Jason Martinez
*Players who may be on the verge of a big league call-up are considered to be 'Knocking Down the Door'.
Mike Carp, 1B/OF - Triple-A Tacoma (SEA): Teammate Dustin Ackley isn't the only minor leaguer making a case for a big league job. Carp might be the hottest hitter in the minors right now after extending his hitting streak to 22 games last night with his third 4-hit game in the last week. The 24 year-old also hit two homers and knocked in seven runs, running his season totals to 19 HR and 58 RBI.

FANTASY PERSPECTIVE: June Housekeeping
by Warren 'Dan' Bogard
It’s June. I will forgo talking about players today to remind fantasy owners about some mid-season housekeeping. We’re still early enough in the season that most fantasy teams are still salvageable. We’re also still early enough in the season that a large lead can be squandered.

MLBDepthCharts.com's May 2011 All-Stars (AL)
by Jason Martinez
You just knew the Red Sox had too much talent to continue their losing ways of early April. After a 19-10 month of May, they are just a game back of the first place Yankees, who finished the month at 15-14. The Yankees had actually lost seven games in the standings to the Sox in the month before a 3-game winning streak combined with a 3-game losing streak by the Sox cut it to four. As expected, this AL East race is very interesting and even last place Baltimore is just six games back.

MLBDepthCharts.com's May 2011 All-Stars (NL)
by Jason Martinez
The biggest surprise, maybe in all of baseball, made their presence felt in the month of May. The Arizona Diamondbacks tied with the Red Sox for the best record in the month at 19-10 to take a 1/2 game lead in the NL West. A much-improved bullpen gives the team a solid chance as any to stay atop the division. If I had to pick my second biggest surprise, it's that the Rockies were the worst team in baseball in May at 8-21. Things sure can change quickly in this game.
