The INBOX at MLBDepthCharts.com - When to expect Hosmer and Moustakas?

I'll be answering reader questions a few times each week in a new feature I'm calling 'The INBOX at MLBDepthCharts.com'. If you have a roster-related question, submit it HERE and I'll do my best to answer within the next few days.

D. Ropiak asks, "When do you see Hosmer and Moustakas coming up?"

You do know that the question is referring to Royals prospects Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas, right?

Relievers on the Rise - April 26, 2011

posted 4/26/11 4:03 PM PST
by Jason Martinez

Earlier today, I posted the weekly 'Reliever Roundup', where I discussed two bullpens that are surprisingly good so far in 2011. Now on to a few relievers who I feel are 'On the Rise' and could play a significant role in their own team's bullpen.

Reliever Roundup - April 26, 2011

posted 4/26/11 12:46 PM PST
by Jason Martinez

In last week's 'Reliever Roundup', I focused on some closers who should be looking over their shoulder. This week, I'll be taking a closer look at two bullpens that appear to be much better than expected.

BIGGEST SURPRISES
Florida Marlins
It was obvious that the Marlins' top priority of the offseason was improving a bullpen that struggled to close out games in 2010. So maybe it shouldn't be too much of a surprise that they have the best bullpen ERA in baseball.

Knocking Down the Door (Pitchers) - April 25, 2011

posted 4/25/11 2:18 PM PST
by Jason Martinez

*Players on the verge of a big league call-up are considered to be 'Knocking Down the Door'.

Rex Brothers, LHP - Triple-A Colorado Springs (COL): Including spring training, Brothers has not allowed an earned run in 15 innings this year. The former 1st Round pick, who has 16 strikeouts and three walks in his first nine PCL innings, doesn't have a clear path to the big leagues at the moment with fellow lefties Franklin Morales and Matt Reynolds both pitching well.

Kirk Nieuwenhuis, OF - Triple-A Buffalo (NYM): Despite being passed over for Jason Pridie when the Mets recently placed Angel Pagan on the disabled list, Nieuwenhuis was a no-brainer for this list after extending his hitting streak to 15 games with a first inning homer in today's game.

FANTASY PERSPECTIVE: Off-Broadway Arms

posted 4/13/11 2:45 PM PST
by Warren “Dan” Bogard

Every fantasy player knows the main event acts of starting pitching. Roy HalladayTim Lincecum, and Felix Hernandez went early in competitive drafts and fetched high prices in auctions; these aces headlined draft boards and are featured in many a hopeful fantasy owner’s pitching staff.

Relievers On the Rise - April 12, 2011

posted 4/12/11 12:45 PM PST
by Jason Martinez

*'Relievers on the Rise' takes a look at pitchers with closer/set-up man potential who are starting to establish themselves as very good big league relievers.

Jordan Walden, RHP (LAA)
The 23 year-old rookie, who has allowed just two hits and a walk in five scoreless innings, looks like he'll be getting the majority of save opportunities for the Angels after Fernando Rodney struggled in his first two games.

Sean Burnett, LHP (WAS)
While he hasn't been officially handed the closing job in Washington, the lefty has two saves in five scoreless innings pitched and appears to be the safest choice for the team until manager Jim Riggleman feels comfortable enough going with Drew Storen.

Joel Hanrahan, RHP (PIT)
With a fastball in the mid-to-high 90's, this 29 year-old right-hander (1.42 ERA, 8 K, 6.1 IP, 5 H, BB, 8 K, 4 Sv) makes it very uncomfortable for opposing hitters when he's on the mound. Although he might not get as many chances to close out games on a team that most expect to be at the bottom of their division, there is a chance he could be trade bait by mid-season.

Craig Kimbrel, RHP (ATL)
Manager Fredi Gonzalez wouldn't commit to Kimbrel as his full-time closer after a shaky spring, but there's no doubt who is getting the ball in the 9th inning after a terrific start (0.00 ERA, 4 IP, H, BB, 7 K). Still just 22 years old, Kimbrel is a strikeout machine who could be in line for 40+ saves on a very good Braves team.

Kameron Loe, RHP (MIL)
The opportunity has arisen for Loe to be the Brewers' go-to guy in the 8th inning. With Takashi Saito hitting the DL with a strained hamstring and LaTroy Hawkins still rehabbing from his offseason shoulder surgery, Loe is the most reliable option. He continues to build off a very strong 2010 season in which he had a 2.78 ERA and 22 holds. This season, he has allowed just 1 earned run in six innings and has three holds. With an improved starting rotation and an offense that should improve once Corey Hart returns from the disabled list, the 29 year-old Loe should be among the league leaders in holds.

Earlier today, I named five position players who could be losing a grip on their job security. Now let's move on to some pitchers who have not been very good early in the season and could be at risk of losing their jobs. It's tough to pick on starters after one or two starts so I'll mostly focus on relievers who've had more than a couple of bad outings.

Minor League Rosters in Progress

Now that I've completed all post-Opening Day major league rosters, I'm in the process of updating all minor league rosters. The rosters should be accurate but some of the projected lineups, rotations, and bullpen roles will be educated guesses, at least initially.
