NEW YORK YANKEES
OFFSEASON PREVIEWposted 10/7/2011
The first line of business for the Yankees will be to cross their fingers and hope that CC Sabathia will not opt out of the remaining four years and $92 million remaining on his contract. If he does, they'll have to either out-bid other interested teams and sign him to an even bigger contract or head into the offseason with a gigantic hole in the rotation.
Ivan Nova was solid in his first full big league season while Bartolo Colon and Freddy Garcia were much better than anyone could've expected. That trio, along with Sabathia, were good enough to lead the Yankees to an AL-best 97 wins. Colon and Garcia are free agents, leaving the Yankees with Nova, the inconsistent A.J. Burnett, and Phil Hughes, who was limited to 74.2 innings this season because of arm fatigue and back issues. Hector Noesi is probably ready for a shot in the rotation and top pitching prospect Manny Bañuelos probably isn't far behind. If Sabathia stays, GM Brian Cashman could once again target a reliable veteran or two as a backup plan just in case the youngsters aren't quite ready. If Sabathia leaves, they'll have to aggressively pursue a top-of-the-rotation starter. The free agent class doesn't offer much besides C.J. Wilson so they may have to explore a trade.
CC Sabathia has agreed to a contract extension

Aside from free agent Luis Ayala, who had a 2.09 ERA in 52 appearances, the team's top relievers should return in 2012. Career saves leader Mariano Riverais still going strong at age 41 and David Robertson has established himself as one of the top setup men in the game. Rafael Soriano is unlikely to opt out of the remaining two years and $25 million of his contract after he had his worst overall season as a big league reliever. The 31 year-old did show flashes of dominance after returning from a shoulder injury, and there aren't too many better options on the free agent market for potential closers, but it's still hard to imagine any team giving him more than what he's set to receive with the Yankees. Cory Wade (2.04 ERA, 8 Hld) and Boone Logan (3.46 ERA, 10 Hld) have probably locked up bullpen spots for 2012 but there's currently a couple of spots up for grabs. Joba Chamberlain, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, could return sometime in the second half.
At least seven of the nine lineup regulars should return, assuming the Yankees pick up the $14 million club option for superstar second baseman Robinson Cano. I'll go ahead and declare that one a no-brainer. Another potential free agent, right fielder Nick Swisher, has a $10.25 million club option. The 30 year-old is coming off of another solid season (.822 OPS) and is a good bet to return unless the team chooses to pursue another corner outfielder this winter. Carlos Beltran and Josh Willingham would be options.
The one likely change will be at designated hitter, where 21 year-old Jesus Montero is the leading candidate to take over for long-time Yankee Jorge Posada. If Sabathia leaves, however, Montero might have to be included in any package to acquire a frontline starter. In that case, the Yankees could target a designated hitter on the free agent market.
•UPDATE 10/19 - Soriano will not opt out of his contract so he'll remain under contract with the team through 2013. The team will also announce that Damaso Marte's club option for 2012 will be declined. Neither move is a surprise.
•UPDATE 10/29 - Cano and Swisher each had their club options for 2012 exercised.
•UPDATE 10/31 - Sabathia has reportedly agreed to a contract extension and will not be opting out of his deal.
•UPDATE 11/24 - Garcia has agreed to return on a one-year deal, stabilizing the back of the rotation. Don't count the Yankees out for one of the bigger names on the free agent market to fill the #2 spot behind Sabathia.
A few questions for you Jason, a) who gets the last spot in the rotation is hughes isn't ready, i would watch out for mitchell and phelps b)chances jorge vazquez gets brought up this year? and c) when do you think Venditte will make it to the majors, and do you think he gets rule fived even though he hasnt been steller in the minors
I think Noesi is next in line if the Yankees need someone. Phelps and Mitchell are good insurance to have in AAA. I think Banuelos will surpass them all by 2013, though.
I think Vazquez only gets a shot if Teixeira gets hurt or if Montero is struggling. He's already proven he can hit AAA pitching so I don't think he's going to force his way onto the roster. Just needs to wait for an opportunity.
From what I've read on Venditte, he's isn't particularly great from either side. The Yankees didn't protect him in the Rule V draft so they don't seem to be particularly high on him. Will be interesting to see if someone takes a chance on him based on his solid minor league numbers.
But a thing to throw out there for Vazquez, he has 50 hrs over the past two years at aaa, and currently he is demolishing sub par, but still decent Mexican league pitching, batting .352 with 17 homers, and his hits are above strikeouts by ten unlike the -47 thing he had going on for scranton, I feel like they will give him a good look in spring training, and if montero falters, vasquez offers great power and a showing of improvemnt
I think Burnett's massive contract gets him one more chance, unfortunately.
But I could see them moving him in a Zambrano-like deal, with the Yanks picking up most of the remainder of his contract. (My rotation preference would be Sabathia-Kuroda-Pineda-Nova-Hughes with Garcia in the back pocket as a long reliever, Burnett out of town for a veteran backup, and Betances and Banuelos standing by in case of injury.)
Funny. I've already had a bunch of similar names brought up on Twitter. Soriano for Burnett. Carlos Lee for Burnett. Adam Dunn for Burnett. It could make sense for some teams but probably not for Angels. Their 5-man rotation is already set.
I dunno, Anonymous, Dunn has $44M over three years left whereas Burnett has $32M over two. If Dunn doesn't bounce back from last year that's a hell of a bad contract to wait out.
I was just going to come here and ask if there was a chance the Yanks stand pat on FAs and just go with Branyan as the lefty DH -- and I see him in the lineup! Nice call, I think it's worth throwing him out there 3 times a week with Jones and A-Rod/Jeter (by way of Nunez) picking up the rest.
As things stand, that's exactly how I see things. Branyan 2-3 DH starts/wk, Jones 2 starts/wk, A-Rod, 2 starts/wk, Jeter once in awhile.
Have a feeling they won't stand pat, though. Makes too much sense to bring back Damon or Matsui and Ibañez has also been mentioned. They've also discussed DH types in trades for Burnett. Sounds like they want to get something done so Branyan would be a backup plan.
OMG as a Yankee fan I'm so happy about the Burnett trade. I realize that he's not the worst pitcher in the world, and I actually hope he does well for the Pirates in a low-pressure environment. But it should be so nice to have an upgraded rotation. Wild pitch numbers should drop by half. Throw in Banuelos for Kuroda next year and this rotation is set for a long time -- until CC is too old and fat to get up on the hill.
If you can overlook the fact that the Yankees spent $69.5M for 3 years of a mediocre A.J. Burnett and two fringe Pirates prospects, then there's definitely nothing wrong with this deal. They cleared $13M off the books over the next two seasons and opened a spot in a crowded rotation. A young and talented trio of Pineda, Nova, and Banuelos should allow the Yankees to stay away from the risky Burnett-type FA's for awhile. They're in good shape.
I like the deal for the Bucs, too. None of their current projected five can be counted on for 180+ innings. Burnett could get 200+. Takes pressure off their bullpen, who wore down as the season went along.
I'm not sure if you take a lot of your info from a source or not, but I'm just curious as to why you put Hughes in the rotation over Garcia. Hughes did great out of the bullpen when he was in that roll a few seasons back, and Garcia had a great season as a starter.
Sounds like it's an open competition between Garcia and Hughes. Hughes has the bullpen experience, but he's also much more talented than Garcia. No reason to think he won't win the job as long as he's healthy and looks closer to his 2010 form. It really can go either way, as is the case with many open competitions going into camp.
Jason, I can overlook the Burnett money because I didn't spend it, and there's no salary cap so it probably didn't affect the rest of the roster in any noticeable way. Just glad to see his wildness gone. And you're right, the future looks bright with their young, cost-controlled starting pitchers.
I'm mostly concerned with who's gonna be making the whipped cream pies for walk-off wins!
I knew you would say that, Jay. I'm a Padres fan so I can't even fully enjoy the success of a younger player (i.e. Cameron Maybin) because he will become unaffordable once he gets into his 3rd season of arbitration. Different mentality than a Yankees fan or Red Sox fan.
It is interesting that the Yankees and Sox have taken a more cautious approach this offseason in regards to spending big on free agents. Hearing that they probably can't afford both Eric Chavez and Raul Ibanez even after trading away Burnett must be very weird for Yankee fans to hear.
Looking over the Yankees roster prediction, I can't see Branyan making the team. With ARod and Jeter up there in age the Yankees need to carry two IF on their 25-man roster. Nunez will most likely be the backup SS and 3B and I'd take Bill Hall over Branyan, because he can play all over the place. Nunez has range and a strong arm which is why I like him at 3B and SS, but his arm is erratic. So, if Cano needed a day off, Hall would be the safer choice at 2B.
I could've gone either way on Branyan vs Hall, but I knew it wouldn't matter once they signed Ibanez so I didn't put too much thought into it. I did think a left-handed DH with power is the best fit, although Hall is more versatile and could help in more ways.
The Yankees have an open spot on their 40 man, and another when Maxwell wil sonn be DFA'd. Who do you think it will be, Dickerson, Curis, Whelan, Banuelos, or Delcarmen? I like Curtis and Banuelos.
I have no idea how this kind of situation works, logistics-wise. When will Pettitte be added to the 40-man roster? At the end of spring training or the day he's ready to pitch in the majors?
He's on a minor league deal so they don't have to add him until they're ready to put him on the 25-man roster. Sounds like early May is the projection for him to be ready.
I still don't get the Craig Tatum signing. Romine will likely start the year on the DL, but Tatum is out of options. Do the Yankees think he'll clear waivers and be ready to start the season in Triple-A? Thats a big risk, because if he doesn't clear waivers Molina will be the only catcher in AAA.
It doesn't reflect this in your above DL list of players for the Yankees, but won't Romine start the year on the Yanks DL and then, once healthy, be optioned to AAA?
I wasn't sure of Romine's timetable. He can also be optioned and placed on the minor league DL, which is only 7 days. Still not a sure thing he'll be on the big league DL.
Thanks for the response. That said, a roster procedure question here: aren't players hurt when up with the big club during spring training (and on the 40-man) subject to big league DL time if they are hurt? I was under the impression they couldn't be sent down to serve their DL time since when they got hurt while they were in Big League camp (and not Minor League camp). Can you clarify?
It's something I've never paid much attention to but you may be right. I guess his big league DL stint would be retroactive to 3/26 so he could still be activated and optioned after just a few minor league games. I'll try to find out.

Who else looked at Venditte and saw LHP/RHP & was like whattttttttttttttt? Get him in the Majors!

To add to what Jason said, Vazquez struck out 166 times in 118 games last season. He has some work to do if he wants to make it to the majors.
Sounds like Pineda & Jose Campos for Montero and Noesi.
Think the Yanks will go for Carlos Peña now that they have an opening at DH?
I'm sure he's on their list but he does have a lot of value defensively. I'd think he would have more value with someone else.
Wow, the call is Burnett sticks in the rotation, interesting projection.
That's a good point. I guess the Yanks would only really have a shot if he's at the "I really want a ring" point in his career.
I think Burnett's massive contract gets him one more chance, unfortunately.

I don't care how bad he was last year, Dunn for Burnett would be sweeeeeeet!
I dunno, Anonymous, Dunn has $44M over three years left whereas Burnett has $32M over two. If Dunn doesn't bounce back from last year that's a hell of a bad contract to wait out.
Dunn sucks!

"Girardi said lineup plan as of now would have Cano batting third and A-Rod cleanup" - Twitter
Thanks! I see the tweet. A-Rod in front of Tex, huh?
You must like Dickerson - what is that 50 font?
If the Yankees signed Jorge Soler, what level of minors would you put him in?
Probably Lo-A, with a chance of him getting to Hi-A by the end of the season. No rush.
The Yankees have an open spot on their 40 man, and another when Maxwell wil sonn be DFA'd. Who do you think it will be, Dickerson, Curis, Whelan, Banuelos, or Delcarmen? I like Curtis and Banuelos.
They don't have to add anyone to the 40-man unless a non-roster guy makes the team out of Spring Training. That seems unlikely right now.
Phelps wins 5th starter job!!!!!!!!
Andy Pettite resigned and came out of retirement.
Didn't think he'd be in big league camp so I removed him. Turns out he is, although I'm not sure he'll pitch anytime soon.
I have no idea how this kind of situation works, logistics-wise. When will Pettitte be added to the 40-man roster? At the end of spring training or the day he's ready to pitch in the majors?

The Yankees signed Ramon Ortiz....highly likely its' a major league deal since he's 39 years old.
