MILWAUKEE BREWERS
OFFSEASON PREVIEWposted 10/17/2011
The Brewers will head into the offseason minus free agent superstarPrince Fielder, leaving one gigantic hole in the middle of the lineup. Although they are expected to try and re-sign the 27 year-old first baseman, Fielder is expected to command well over $100M on a long-term deal and no one is giving the Brewers much of a chance. Whoever replaces him will have big shoes to fill. Internally, former top prospectMat Gamelis the likely choice although there is talk thatCorey Hartcould move to first base from the outfield, which would give the team the option of pursuing a corner outfielder. An opportunity to hit behind MVP candidateRyan Braun in the lineup is a strong selling point for any free agent.
Gamel is one option to replace Fielder at 1B.

Finding a replacement for Fielder is likely the top priority but it could be a case where they bring in multiple additions to try and make up for the loss. ShortstopYuniesky Betancourt is unlikely to have his $6M club option picked up and third basemanCasey McGehee's job is not safe after a very disappointing season (.626 OPS). So the Brewers can potentially go into 2012 with three new starters in the infield to go along with second basemanRickie Weeks. Ideally, they could also improve defensively after their playoff debacle that earned them nicknames such as the 'Milwaukee Brew-errors'.Nyjer MorganandCarlos Gomez are likely to share time in center field again whileJonathan Lucroyreturns behind the plate.
The entire starting rotation returns and even though offseason acquisitionsZack Greinke andShaun Marcumdidn't pitch well in the playoffs, they were a big reason for the team's improvement in 2011. Along withYovani Gallardo,Randy Wolf, andChris Narveson, the Brewers' rotation had the 6th best ERA in the National League. And there's some decent starting pitching depth in the high minors, includingMichael Fiers,Wily Peralta, and Amaury Rivas. None are future top-of-the-rotation starters but they could probably help out if needed.
While most of the offseason talk will be focused around the lineup and Fielder, the bullpen is also going to need some work. Once the team officially declines the $17.5M mutual option for setup man Francisco Rodriguez, they will have three relievers to replace or re-sign. VeteransTakashi Saito(2.03 ERA, 10 Hld) andLaTroy Hawkins (2.42 ERA, 20 Hld) are both free agents, leaving closer John Axford without much proven help.Kameron Loefigures to once again be in the mix for a late-inning role andMarco Estradashould return in some capacity. There are plenty of other options that have had success in the big leagues but many of them (Manny Parra, Mitch Stetter,Brandon Kintzler) finished the season on the disabled list. With Rodriguez expected to look for another closer's job elsewhere, I'd expect GM Doug Melvin to aggressively pursue a reliable setup man to take his place.
•UPDATE 10/19 - Melvin shot down the idea that Hart would move to first base. So cross that off the list of options for now.
•UPDATE 10/30- Betancourt and Rodriguez had their options declined for 2012.
•UPDATE 12/5 - Manager Ron Roenicke expects McGehee to be in the lineup, either at third base, or possibly first if Fielder isn't re-signed. •UPDATE 12/7 - After failing to find a suitable multi-year deal on the free agent market, Rodriguez has accepted arbitration. He'll return on a one-year deal, although he could be shopped to a team in search of a closer. •UPDATE 12/8- The team had been reportedly pursuing free agent Jimmy Rollins but he's likely heading back to the Phillies. With limited options remaining, they have agreed to sign Alex Gonzalez to be their starting shortstop in 2012. •UPDATE 12/12- Former Cubs third baseman Aramis Ramirez has reportedly agreed to a three-year deal.
They need to add something, anything to that lineup
Especially if Braun is out the first two and a half months or so.
If not what do you get? A boat load of strike outs and some dingers mixed in. Not exactly a winning combination
The pitching remains strong though however and they definitely significantly upgraded their defense over Yuni with Gonzalez, but got this team could break the Diamonbacks record for team strikeouts in a season
If they don't trade him, he'll definitely play 1B vs LHP. But I think they have to give Gamel every chance to win the regular job because they need a lefty in the middle of the lineup and it's just time to find out if Gamel can be an impact hitter.
I think they're gonna give Gamel a shot. But if Pena's price tag goes down, I wouldn't count them out. If he doesn't get a multi-year deal, I bet he'd take a 1 yr, $10-12M deal again.
Definite possibility on the batting order. Good point on Green. Conrad still needs to have a good camp but it makes sense to keep Green playing everyday in the minors since there's not even a platoon option anymore now that Ramirez signed.
That's a big 'if', but I agree. He is talented and two lefties would be ideal in the 'pen. Parra is another question mark since he missed all of 2011 with multiple injuries.
I was waiting a few more days for an update on Kintzler's condition but it's looking like he'll start on the DL. McClendon is an option, but Tim Dillard might have an edge because he's out of options.
Anywhere I can find confirmation that Veras will be the 7th inning guy?
I think Dillard will make the bullpen over McClendon... Mike has been struggling lately and Roniecke seems to like Dillard and he is also out of options.

I really have a feeling Doug gives big money to Reyes!! I just have a feeling about this!!

Mcgehee for gamel at 1b?

Nick Punto and Andruw Jones would be great acquisitions now.
Could Carlos Pena end up here?

I believe this will be the batting order this year...
1) Hart,RF
2) Morgan or Aoki,CF
3) Braun,LF
4) Ramirez,3B
5) Weeks,2B
6) Gamel,1B
7) Gonzalez,SS
8) Lucroy,C
If Aoki is starting then Morgan is gone. Brewers will go with Aoki/Gomez platoon in CF.
Also... I believe Brooks Conrad makes the team over Taylor Green. Especially, since Green has an option available.

I also believe... If Braddock's head is right he will be in the bullpen instead of Kintzler.

I would replace Kintzler with Mike McClendon... He has a real nice shot at making the bullpen this year.
And I would switch Loe with Veras... Veras will be the 7th inning setup man this year.

didn't they sign corey patterson, why didn't he get a nri
He didn't get an NRI. I'm not sure why he wouldn't get one, considering their OF situation was up in the air with Braun at the time.
I think Dillard will make the bullpen over McClendon... Mike has been struggling lately and Roniecke seems to like Dillard and he is also out of options.
Chris Narveson is out of options - FYI
