SAN DIEGO PADRES
OFFSEASON PREVIEW posted 12/1/2011
Often referred to by the media as the 'Punchless Padres', the offense has actually shown an ability to score some runs in the 2nd half. Led by 24 year-old centerfielder Cameron Maybin, who has a .277 BA and 35 SB in his Padres debut, and first baseman Jesus Guzman, a 27 year-old career minor leaguer who is hitting .329 over 68 games in his first chance as a big league regular, the Padres are much less likely to be shut down by an opposing pitcher these days. Along with third baseman Chase Headley, who was hitting .292 with a .380 OBP before fracturing his finger in early August, and catcher Nick Hundley (.827 OPS in 70 games), who could be acknowledged as one of the better all-around catchers in the game if he could just avoid the disabled list for an entire season, the Padres have a solid group of players to build around. While Guzman is not very good defensively at any position and would be a terrific fit as a designated hitter in the American League, first base prospect Anthony Rizzo is hitting just .140 in 40 big league games and might not be ready to be handed the starting job in April 2012. They might be better off holding on to Guzman until they know Rizzo is ready to make an impact.

While veterans Jason Bartlett and Orlando Hudson were brought in this past offseason to solidify the middle of the infield, they have struggled at times. If GM Jed Hoyer has an opportunity to acquire some competition this offseason for either spot, I wouldn't be surprised to see him pull the trigger on a deal. The corner outfield spots may also be a target for Hoyer this winter as he tries to improve his offense. Currently, the very talented yet inconsistent duo of Kyle Blanks and Will Venable are penciled in. Blanks is one of the few players in the organization with power that shouldn't be affected by the pitcher-friendly confines of Petco Park. He does have a tendency to go in prolonged slumps, as he is right now (1-for-16 in last 6 games), but his .890 OPS in August shows what he's capable of doing. Venable, or 'Venatease', as he is now referred to on Twitter by the 'Friarhood', is a classic 'Jeckyll and Hyde' player. He can look like one of the worst hitters in the league for a month and then a potential five-tool star for the next month. He's also on pace for 30+ stolen bases and does a solid job covering the spacious right field area in Petco. At 28 years old, he could be closing in on his ceiling and the Padres will have to decide if they're content with what he brings to the table. Prospect James Darnell is likely going to play the outfield in the Arizona Fall League and should be one of the top contenders for a starting job next spring.
The starting rotation gets mixed reviews for 2011, with Mat Latos no longer the dominant force he was in 2010. Don't get me wrong. He's still good. Just not one of the best pitchers in the league, as he was for most of last season. Clayton Richard struggled before he was shut down in early July and eventually underwent shoulder surgery. Tim Stauffer was one of the better starters around in the 1st half of the season (2.97 ERA) but appears to have run out of gas in the 2nd half (5.61 ERA). They did receive 20 very good starts from Dustin Moseley before he was lost for the season with a dislocated shoulder and veteran Aaron Harang has been solid in his first season with the team. His $5 million mutual option is a no-brainer for the team to pick up. Maybe not so much for the player, though. If Harang thinks he can get a lot more on the free agent market, he can decline the option and leave after just one season with his hometown team. The Padres have other options if Harang departs, including lefty Cory Luebke, who has earned a spot, regardless. Impressive Double-A starters Robbie Erlin, Casey Kelly, and Joe Wieland could be ready to contribute at some point in 2012.
An offseason with an unsettled closer situation is unfamiliar territory for Padres fans. All-Star closer Heath Bell is a free agent and could seek a multi-year deal this winter. He might not get an annual salary, however, that would exceed the one-year salary he'd earn by simply accepting arbitration. But will the Padres offer him arbitration? It would make sense if they did, considering how hard it will be to replace Bell and setup man Mike Adams, who was traded to Texas earlier in the season. But the $8-10 million he'd likely make would account for approximately 20% of the team's projected payroll, something the front office would probably like to avoid. I wrote about a Padres' bullpen without Bell and Adams back in early July. To summarize, things could get ugly. I think they'll try to re-sign Bell and hope to find another reliever or two to compete for a setup role with Brad Brach, Ernesto Frieri, and Luke Gregerson. Miles Mikolas, who has a 1.78 ERA and 21 saves between Double-A and Hi-A, has an outside shot to jump to the majors early next season.
•UPDATE 12/7 - A few days after losing free agent Bell to the Marlins, the Padres moved quickly to fill the void by acquiring Huston Street from the Rockies for a PTBNL. The team had reportedly offered Bell a two-year extension worth at least $15 million during the season but did not want to add a third year. They'll pay Street $8 million for one season.
•UPDATE 12/17 - New GM Josh Byrnes continues to be aggressive on the trade market, sending Latos to the Reds for Yonder Alonso, Yasmani Grandal, reliever Bradley Boxberger, and starter Edinson Volquez.

Other - Resign Aaron Harang.
I'd re-sign Harang and put Moseley and LeBlanc into the pen.
I really like the Latos trade. Although Latos still have tremendous upside, Byrnes seems to have made a good trade for once by getting 3 solid prospects and an inconsistent pitcher who might fair better pitching at PETCO.
I think the Padres' strategy is, and should be, to acquire young, controllable position players (Alonso, Grandal) through trades and the draft. It's a lot easier to sign free agent pitchers because they are going to want to pitch in Petco. Free agent hitters don't want to play in Petco. I hate trading an ace but I have to admit loving the fact that two high-upside position players are now in the mix. Haven't seen many of those in San Diego over the past decade.
With that said, I think they'll struggle without an ace on the staff in 2012. It would be nice to find that ace before 2013 because I think they have a chance to be really good with all the young talent in the system.
Wow, I was just looking up potentially available starting pitchers for next off-season, and Jake Peavy will still only be 31; it seems like just a long time ago when he was pitching for SD
I was just thinking about that recently. If he has another injury-plagued season in 2012, the Padres might be a good landing spot for him to rebuild his value. But if he stays healthy and has a typical pre-White Sox Jake Peavy season, he's gonna get another big deal because he'll only be 31. CJ Wilson got a 6-yr deal and he's older.
The Reds should turn around and claim Martinez, he can replace Grandal in AAA. At worse they turn around and DFA him in a week. Either way the Reds are going to need to sign a catcher to play aside Corky Miller in Louisville.
Did they resign hermida after he was dfa'd?
Yes. Forgot to move him back up to the 'Outside Looking In' section. Thanks!
The recent moves make no sense to me. Are the Padres rebuilding or trying to win now? Carlos Quentin is a very good player, but....?
More than anything, it shows that they aren't sold on Jesus Guzman as their starting LF and don't believe Kyle Blanks is ready to be, or will ever be, an impact hitter in the big leagues. Acquiring Street and Quentin shows that they aren't ready to give up on 2012 before it even starts. The future is still bright because of their farm system but crazier things have happened in the NL West so why not try put a competitive team on the field. No team is unbeatable in this division.
I think the Latos trade has people thinking 're-build' but Byrnes had a chance to bring in his starting 1B for the next several years, starting catcher of the near future, setup man and possible closer of the near future, and a guy in Volquez who is a risk, but a former All-Star who could be as good as Latos if he can overcome his issues (PED suspension, TJ surgery, attitude problem). It's not a case where he traded for prospects that may or may not help in a few years.
Owings' contract is a big league deal.
It's updated. I was already away from a cpu when I found out it was a big league deal.
Do you think Venable is in a platoon situation or is more likely to play everyday?
Should be a platoon. I think Denorfia will get the majority of AB's against LHP.
I'm just glad we locked up Maybin, he's out future and a great all around player. Getting Quentin was a great move. The padres need some more names like that who can bring people to the park. There's one thing that's terribly wrong with the starting lineup...Guzman is not in it. It was a proven fact that last year he was our best hitter and now he's not even starting. He's not great on defense, but his bat is worth it. Bench Venable or even ODogg and put Guzman in.
Despite being the team's best hitter in 2011, Guzman won't play everyday because Alonso is now the 1B. Guzman's not very good at 1B or any other position, for that matter. Still, he will be in the lineup against LHP, occasionally against RHP, and will be the top pinch-hitter off the bench. Still good for 300-400 AB's.
Happened to speak to Jeff Suppan the other day at spring training, he says hes still gonna be out for a few weeks with a tricep injury, said he'll likely start the season on the dl if no other move happens
Where is Erlin in the 4/1/2012 update??
Erlin was reassigned to minors on 3/15.
Re: Suppan
Thanks for the info! He'd be on the AAA DL, unless the Padres plan on purchasing his contract to keep him from opting out and then placing him on the big league DL. I'd guess he's reassigned to the minors.
