MIAMI MARLINS
OFFSEASON PREVIEW posted 9/15/2011
That's not a misprint. The Florida Marlins will be known as the Miami Marlins when they move into their brand new stadium in 2012. We also know that the Marlins employ one of the elite power hitters in the game in 21 year-old Mike Stanton, who already has 54 career homers in 236 games. It's scary to think that he's probably gonna get a lot better. Plenty of question marks surround him in the Marlins' lineup, though. Shortstop Hanley Ramirez, who has set career-lows in just about every category across the board this season, has only been able to play in 92 games and will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery that could keep him out for 4-6 months. Chris Coghlan has had to deal with multiple injuries and has played most of his games this season in the minors. Logan Morrison, who has five hits and his 20th HR in today's double-header, filed a grievance against the team for sending him to the minors last month without cause. Every team will be asking if he's available in a trade, whether the Marlins plan on dealing him or not. Omar Infante and Jose Lopez, who have been the team's most productive hitters besides Stanton in the 2nd half, are set to become free agents. While last year's offseason focus was the bullpen, the Marlins will spend a lot more time in the coming months figuring out how to fix the other areas of their team.
Versatile leadoff man Emilio Bonifacio has been a pleasant surprise, playing every position but catcher, first base, and pitcher while posting a .362 OBP and stealing 36 bases. He could be used in a similar role in 2012, although there's a chance they could just hand him the second base job if they can't re-sign Infante. Morrison, Gaby Sanchez, and John Buck will return to the starting lineup and Matt Dominguez should be the favorite to win the starting third base job, as he was this past spring. A year older and with a few weeks of major league experience under his belt, the 22 year-old should be better prepared this time around. Coghlan, who had an impressive .850 OPS during his rookie season in '09 before injuries took their toll, will have competition from Bryan Petersen for the starting center field job and possibly an offseason acquisition. On paper, the Marlins have a very competitive lineup as long as Ramirez is healthy and especially if they can re-sign Infante.
#1 starter Josh Johnson only made 9 starts in 2011.

In mid-June, free agent pick-up Javier Vazquez had a 7.09 ERA after 13 starts and many people (including myself) were wondering if he was finished. Well, we couldn't have been more wrong. The 35 year-old has a 2.14 ERA with 16 BB and 90 K in 96.1 IP over his last 16 starts and is in position for another big payday. Vazquez is reportedly considering retirement but maybe the Puerto Rico native would stay with the Marlins for one more season to pitch in the new stadium. If not Vazquez, they'll have to look for someone to take his spot. The starting pitching depth in the organization has been exposed this season during the absence of ace Josh Johnson, who has been out since mid-May with a shoulder injury. Brad Hand has made the jump from Double-A to make the majority of starts but, as would be expected, he's been inconsistent. Anibal Sanchez, Ricky Nolasco, and Chris Volstad will return behind Johnson.
Offseason acquisitions Randy Choate, Mike Dunn, Ed Mujica, and Ryan Webb have each contributed to a much-improved bullpen and the quartet will return in 2012. Closer Leo Nuñez (Juan Carlos Oviedo) has 35 saves in 41 chances, although he has a 5.79 ERA since the All-Star break. He'll be entering his final season of arbitration and could be a non-tender or trade candidate if the Marlins think they have someone ready to take his spot. They'll have at least three relievers who deserve to be in a big league bullpen that are currently on the bubble for a roster spot so depth is definitely not a problem.
•UPDATE 9/27 - Infante has agreed to a two-year extension so he'll continue to start at second base while Bonifacio could play center field, third base, or shortstop if Ramirez isn't ready to start the season.
•UPDATE 11/22 - Lefty starter Wade LeBlanc was acquired from San Diego for John Baker, giving the team a solid back-of-the-rotation option.
•UPDATE 12/2 - Heath Bell agreed to a three-year team to be team's closer. Oviedo is almost certain to be non-tendered.
•UPDATE 12/5 - The team will reportedly tender a contract to reliever Juan Carlos Oviedo, formerly known as Leo Nuñez. It was assumed they wouldn't after Bell signed. Oviedo, who'll likely make around $4M in arbitration, would likely be the primary setup man.
•UPDATE 12/7 - Longtime White Sox starter Mark Buehrle has agreed to a four-year deal, giving the Marlins a veteran starter for the top of the rotation.

Why does it say Juan Carlos Oviedo? Did Leo Nunez change his name?
I guess you missed the news. Has been playing under a fake identity (Leo Nuñez). His real name is Juan Carlos Oviedo and he's about a year older.
Cousins or Coghlan seem like better options for CF. Bonafacio seems more suited as a bench/utility guy.
When did Oviedo leave the 40-man roster?
Oviedo (Nunez) was placed on the Restricted List in September, taking him off the 40-man roster, after it was found that he was using a fake identity.
They need to trade Volstad to a team that has a pitching coach that can fix him like St. Louis or San Francisco. It's a shame to see Juan Carlos Oviedo go because he's a great talent. I can easily see another team picking him up in a year or so when his legal issues are settled. It's great to finally see Emilio Bonifacio break out like he did last year. He has become a very useful player as he can lead off, steal bases and play various positions. Now that he can hit he has become a great weapon for the Marlins. I believe that Dominguez deserves a shot at third. He play's terrific defense, and no matter how good or bad his bat is, he can hit eighth. As for Sanchez, if Hanley's not ready by the time the season starts they need him, if not, then they could trade him and get a few good pieces for what looks like a depleted farm system. By doing so, they would open up first base for Logan Morrison, and they would improve their defense in left field by having Coghlan, Cousins, and Peterson, who are all good defenders, battle for the starting job and seven spot in the lineup. Their lineup should be something like Bonifacio, Infante, Ramirez, Morrison, Stanton, Buck, Coghlan, Dominguez, Pitcher. Now that they have Bell closing, their bullpen is set. As for the rotation I think that they need a lefty to go between Johnson and Sanchez. Buehrle would be fine, so would Wilson, but he would cost a lot more money and years than Buehrle would. They could trade Nolasco, but they gave him a contract that not many teams want, and I don't think he's worth it. The fifth spot should be a battle between Brad Hand, Wade LeBlanc, and here's a suprise... Sean West. He was okay a few years ago, I think they should give him another shot. The only other spots to fill are on the bench, and I think they should bring back Greg Dobbs. They also have Donnie Murphy, and Brett Hayes and Brad Davis to catch. They have other in house options for the outfield as well.
So Volstad over LeBlanc?
Blaze#13 posts many good point, such as the fifth starter spot, that has to be up in air and west seems viable as does leblanc and volstad, let hand stay in the minors, and i think coghlan over negrych, he was the roy and can play 2b 3b and outfield
Re: Volstad over LeBlanc
Easily. Volstad's upside is still way higher than LeBlanc. Needs to be more consistent but he finished strong last season. He'll also be getting a nice raise in arbitration. The Marlins won't want to keep a guy making $1M+ in AAA. They'll give him every chance to win the job. LeBlanc is a solid guy to have just in case. He's their designated #6 starter.
Re: Coghlan
I think they'll get a veteran type to fill out the bench before Spring Training. Don't think Coghlan is a bench guy at this point. He's too talented and too young. If he's not starting in the big leagues, he needs regular AB's in the minors so he can at least start building back up his value.
Aaron Rowand to Miami!
Why isn't Buerhle active?
Thanks for the heads up. They didn't have room on the 40-man when he signed but I forgot to bold his name after they did make room.
Isn't Coghlan out of options? Can't see them DFA'ng the 2009 rookie of the year. I'd have him on the bench over Cousins. Cousins can use regular AB's in AAA anyhow to show that his back is 100%.
If he's out of options, it does change things as he wouldn't be a DFA candidate. There would be plenty of interest on the trade market. Ideally, he should be playing everyday in the minors to regain his old form and boost his value. But like I said, I'm not sure if he is out of options.
Who gets DFA'd for Dobbs: has to be one of Caminero, Reed, or Jennings...right?!
Not Jennings. He was just added to the 40-man. Reed or Caminero would appear to make the most sense. Maybe Villanueva, based on his drop off in 2011.
What happens if Cespedes signs with Miami? Does he start right away? If so does it move Bonifacio or Infante to the bench? Or does Cespedes go to AAA?
I'm hearing he'd start in the minors. After a month or two, the picture would become clearer because of injuries/performance/etc. If Bonifacio isn't performing at top level like in 2011, it would be easier to move him back to a super-utility role.
Mike Stanton is now going by Giancarlo Stanton, his real first name.
I think Coghlan is better than Kearns, no?
Kearns' role is that of a right-handed hitting veteran who has experience coming off the bench. Not an easy role for a younger player. Coghlan is still young enough and has enough potential where he needs regular AB's. Not a bench player at this point. Still considered a future regular, so he needs to play and that won't be in the big leagues unless Stanton and/of Morrison miss time.
Is Morrison considered the future 1B?
I don't think they're clear on what will happen in the future. As long as Gaby Sanchez is there, he's in LF. If they trade Sanchez, Morrison would very likely move to 1B. That would be more likely if they had a good player ready to take over in LF.
