LOS ANGELES DODGERS
OFFSEASON PREVIEW posted 9/26/2011
With plenty of holes to fill this offseason and reportedly free to sign players to long-term contracts despite their financial problems, the Dodgers could be in the mix for some of the top hitters on the market. Finding a catcher, first baseman, second baseman, third baseman, and maybe even a corner outfielder could be on GM Ned Colletti's 'Things to Do' list for the offseason. Non-tendering current first baseman James Loney after the season was a no-brainer at the end of July when he was hitting .254 with 4 HR. But he's been one of most productive hitters in the game since August 1st with a .361 BA, 7 HR, and 30 RBI. No longer a non-tender candidate, the Dodgers could look to trade the 27 year-old if they they can land Prince Fielder or Albert Pujols on the free agent market. If not, it would be hard to find an upgrade over Loney so he could be sticking around.

Will Loney's late-season resurgence keep him in L.A.?

The Dodgers could also start discussing a contract extension with MVP-candidate Matt Kemp. The 27 year-old will be a free agent at the end of the 2012 season and would be in line for one of the richest contracts in all of baseball. His uncertain future in Los Angeles probably doesn't help to attract talent to the Dodgers. If they can lock him up to a multi-year deal early this offseason, it would be a selling point for free agents.

Who surrounds Kemp in the 2012 lineup is a mystery. Andre Ethier, when healthy, is an All-Star caliber player that complements Kemp very well. He recently underwent arthroscopic knee surgery but should be ready to go when Spring Training begins. Like Kemp, Ethier will be a free agent after 2012 but he's more likely to be traded than signed to an extension. Shortstop Dee Gordon (.290 BA, 23 SB in 53 games) has probably done enough to earn a starting job in 2012 and fellow rookie Jerry Sands has come on strong as of late (.360 BA, 5 2B, 2 HR in September) and has a good shot at the starting left field job. Bringing back free agent catcher Rod Barajas makes sense while free agents Jamey CarrollAaron Miles, and Juan Rivera have all played well at times. Casey Blake's $6 million club option is likely to be declined after he played in just 63 games because of multiple injuries. Juan Uribe is still around and could be an option to fill the hole at second or third base but he's coming off of a disappointing season that was also plagued by injuries. Ivan DeJesus, Jr. (.820 OPS in 100 Triple-A games) is also an option to play second base.

The starting rotation has a superstar of its own in Clayton Kershaw, a Cy Young candidate who has 21 wins and 25 quality starts. He won't be a free agent for awhile but he is in line for a hefty pay raise as he enters his first year of arbitration. The 23 year-old lefty should anchor the rotation for years to come. Things aren't as hopeful after Kershaw in the rotation. Chad Billingsley, who was an All-Star back in 2009, has a career-high 4.21 ERA and appears to have regressed this season. Ted Lilly has turned things around over the past 11 starts but he had a 5.08 ERA after his first 21 starts. Promising rookie Rubby De La Rosa is likely out for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery last month, leaving John ElyNathan Eovaldi, and a handful of Double-A pitchers in the mix to fill out the rotation. By the time we get to Spring Training, though, the Dodgers are likely to have a few more veteran options. Jon Garland has an $8 million club option which is likely to be declined after he missed most of the season due to a shoulder injury. He could return on a much cheaper deal. Hiroki Kuroda could also be re-signed. The 36 year-old apparently likes pitching for the Dodgers, considering he would not waive his no-trade clause at the trade deadline.

After a nightmare 1st half of the season in which closer after closer went down with an injury, the season is finishing on a high note. Rookie Javy Guerra has a 1.97 ERA and 20 saves in 21 chances. And he may not even be the best option to close out games for the team in 2012. Kenley Jansen, who struggled early in the season and has been on the disabled list twice this year, might be the most dominant reliever in baseball over the past month. In his last 15 appearances, the 23 year-old converted catcher has allowed 2 ER in 14.1 innings with 30 strikeouts. He's allowed just six hits and has walked four batters over that span. Scott Elbert, who was moved to the bullpen after spending most of his minor league career as a starter, has a 2.43 ERA in 45 appearances and Josh Linblom has also pitched well in his rookie season. There is also a handful of impressive minor league relievers on the fast track to the big leagues (see Steve Ames and Shawn Tolleson). Now if Hong-Chih Kuo can only recover from his anxiety disorder, which has turned him from one of the best relievers in baseball in 2010 (1.20 ERA, 12 Sv, 21 Hld) to an unreliable pitcher who has 23 walks in 27 innings pitched this year, this group would be in terrific shape heading into 2012.

UPDATE 10/4 - Blake and Garland had their club options declined for 2012.
UPDATE 11/3 - Rivera has agreed to return on a one-year, $4 million deal with a club option for 2013.
UPDATE 11/14 - Kemp has agreed to an eight-year, $160 million contract extension.
UPDATE 11/14 - Mark Ellis has signed a two-year deal to become the team's starting second baseman.
UPDATE 11/15 - Matt Treanor has signed a one-year deal, presumably to back up whoever ends up as the starting catcher.
UPDATE 11/30 - Infielder Adam Kennedy has reportedly agreed to a one-year deal. The 35 year-old veteran will primarily serve as a backup at second base and third base.
UPDATE 12/2 - Lefty starter Chris Capuano has reportedly agreed to a two-year deal. He is currently penciled in as the team's #4 starter.
UPDATE 12/5 - Utilityman Jerry Hairston, Jr.  has signed a two-year deal. He'll likely spell Gordon at shortstop, Sands in left field, and could end up getting the majority of his AB's at third base if Uribe struggles again.
UPDATE 12/6 - Aaron Harang has agreed to a two-year deal, filling the last rotation spot. All five projected starters are signed through 2013 or beyond.

Offseason Needs: Third Baseman, Setup Man
Potential Position Battles: TBD

DeJesus over Sellers? Seems like it should be the other way around. DeJesus hasn't shown much.

Sellers has gotten a long look this month but he's only managed a .563 OPS. DeJesus hasn't gotten a chance for regular playing time in the big leagues. Probably up for grabs at this point but I doubt the Dodgers go into Spring Training with those two as the best options.

Sellers has shown good defense at SS, 3B, and 2B, and although he struggled down the stretch he showed a surprising amount of pop for a middle infielder. The Adam Kennedy signing points to the front office being comfortable with Sellers as the primary backup for Dee Gordon since SS is not in Kennedy's skill set.

DeJesus' stock as a prospect was higher before breaking his leg in 2009. The fact that he hasn't earned a September call-up despite playing relatively well in AAA for two consecutive years, combined with reports that management is concerned about attitude problems makes it seem like he is a long shot to make the club.

Good point on Sellers backing up at SS. Should've taken a closer look before making the projection change. Had 3 OF's on the bench (Gwynn, Oeltjen, Rivera) and no backup SS. No need for that. Thanks!

Plus- Dejesus has the potential to become an everyday second baseman leading most to believe that the Dodgers want him to play everyday. Unless something happens to Ellis or Kennedy he will be in AAA full time. Sellers looks more like a career utility infielder, meaning playing time isn't really an issue. Sellers will definitely see time with the big league club if he doesn't break camp with them.

Was curious where you would put Eovaldi. Saw every start he made last year and his stuff and poise were future top of the rotation tools. He seems a given to be in the rotation and with Kershaw and Billingsley will give them a chance, but 5 of the 8 in lineup are below average big leaguers.

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... December 5, 2011 at 8:27 PM

Sounds like they'll sign Harang so Eovaldi would start in AAA and likely be the first guy up if there was an injury. His recent Baseball America scouting report mentions him as a potential late-inning reliever. If all is going well and the rotation is healthy, I could see him in a relief role down the stretch. The entire rotation would be signed thru 2013 so he appears blocked from a starting role until 2014.

I like Eovaldi as a reliever more than a starter personally. I've only watched him a handful of times, but from what I've seen, he has a semi-jerky arm motion as he takes his ball hand out of the glove. That kind of arm motion translates better in the bullpen.

Man, they have a solid looking bullpen on paper for the next few years!

What is Hairston supposed to do? He can play short, right?

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... December 31, 2011 at 2:04 PM

I think he'll get plenty of AB's split mostly between SS, 3B, and LF. Where he gets the most AB's really depends on who is hurt or playing the worst between Gordon, Uribe, and Sands. None are a sure bet to have solid seasons in 2012 and that's why bringing in Hairston is such a smart move.

John Grabow over Josh Lindblom in the bullpen?

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... January 7, 2012 at 9:40 AM

Tough call after Lindblom pitched well in the big leagues last season. But I like the idea of 2 lefties in the 'pen. The bullpen is deep with right-handed power arms so I'd rather see a young pitcher like Lindblom get regular appearances in the minors to start the season and I think the veteran Grabow will get a long look.

What about Shawn Tolleson??????

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... February 19, 2012 at 6:15 PM

Not invited to big league camp. I'd say he has an outside shot to make it to the big leagues later in 2012. There are a couple of really good young relievers in their farm system that are on the fast track.

Any news of left field starter? See your going with Sands, MLB.com has Rivera and somewhere else has Gwynn.

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... February 29, 2012 at 3:29 PM

No news. It's likely to be shared between the three with Sands also an option to start the season in Triple-A.

teach4life said... March 5, 2012 at 12:01 PM

Even though he is out of options, I can't see the Dodgers opening with Ramon Troncoso. He just hasn't produced in the majors since Torre abused his arm. I would look for Angel Guzman or Jamey Wright to get that 7th spot with maybe a lefty like Grabow having an outside shot.
