LOS ANGELES ANGELS
OFFSEASON PREVIEW posted 9/29/2011
While the Angels stayed in the playoff race throughout the season and finished the year with 86 wins, it's easy to second-guess the team's offseason trade of Mike Napoli for Vernon Wells and their lack of aggressiveness at this year's trade deadline. Napoli ended up having a terrific season for the AL West champion Rangers, hitting .320 with 30 HR and 75 RBI in 113 games. Wells did manage 25 HR but hit just .218 with a horrendous .248 OBP. Worst of all, the 32 year-old is owed over $60 million through 2014. Earning a playoff berth would've made that pill much easier to swallow for Angel fans but they fell just short. They failed to upgrade their obvious holes in the back of the rotation and bullpen at the deadline while the Rangers finally ran away from the Angels late in the season after acquiring three very good setup men in July and August.

It's hard not to see GM Tony Reagins focusing on his pitching staff this offseason with the lineup likely to look very similar in 2012. The only changes I can envision are Mike Trout eventually getting the bulk of playing time over Wells in the outfield and Hank Conger (or someone else not named Jeff Mathis) taking over full-time behind the plate. Wells (.851 OPS vs LHP) and Bobby Abreu (.766 OPS vs RHP) could find themselves in a platoon once Trout proves he is ready for a full-time role. The 20 year-old with five-tool potential flashed his ability at times but finished the season in a 10-for-55 slump. There is no question that he is going to be a star but it's probably a good idea to continue easing him in and possibly having him start the season in Triple-A. I'd expect him to join Peter Bourjos and Torii Hunter in the Angels' outfield for good before mid-season.

Manager Mike Scioscia will continue to shuffle his infield with Erick AybarAlberto CallaspoMaicer Izturis, and Howie Kendrick all getting plenty of at-bats. Rookie first baseman Mark Trumbo had a fine season with 29 HR and 87 RBI but there's no doubt that a healthy Kendrys Morales would make the lineup even better. Out since May 2010 with a devastating ankle injury, the 28 year-old could return by Opening Day. He was 5th in MVP voting after the 2009 season when he hit .306 with 34 HR and 108 RBI.

Weaver tied for the league-lead with 28 quality starts

Jered WeaverDan Haren, and Ervin Santana, who combined for 100 starts (75 quality starts), are among the best trio of starting pitchers in baseball. Thus, the Angels are still in very good shape. They will need two other starters behind them and this is where they struggled in 2011. Tyler Chatwood, who was rushed to the big leagues at age 21 because of injuries and ineffective pitching from Scott Kazmir and Joel Pineiro, struggled badly in the second half and probably needs some more Triple-A seasoning before he's ready. Right now, he's penciled into the rotation along with Jerome Williams, who returned to the majors for the first time since 2007 to post a 2.31 ERA in six starts. Garrett Richards will also be in the mix for a spot but it's hard to imagine the team going into Spring Training without another veteran starter or two in the mix to fill out the rotation.

Reagins' offseason bullpen acquisitions were actually quite good, although that will always be overshadowed by the Wells trade. Scott Downs, signed to a three-year deal, had a 1.34 ERA and 26 holds. Hisanori Takahashi, signed to a two-year deal, pitched 68 innings and posted a 3.44 ERA. Left-handed relievers will obviously not be a priority this offseason. Rookie Jordan Walden locked down the closer's job sooner than expected, saving 32 games and striking out 67 batters in 60.1 innings. With a year of experience under his belt, he's expected to improve on his consistency and cut down on the number of blown saves (10). Trevor Bell (3.41 ERA), Bobby Cassevah (2.72 ERA), and Rich Thompson (3.00 ERA) all had solid years out of the 'pen but a right-handed setup man to pair with Downs in the late innings could be on the offseason shopping list.

UPDATE 11/30 - Catcher Chris Iannetta has been acquired from Colorado for pitcher Tyler Chatwood. It's not clear who will be Iannetta's backup but Mathis is very likely to be non-tendered.
UPDATE 12/3 - Non-tendering Mathis wasn't necessary, after all. The Angels traded him to Toronto for lefty starter Brad Mills.
UPDATE 12/7 - Reliever LaTroy Hawkins has agreed to a one-year deal, filling the void the Angels had for a right-handed setup man.
UPDATE 12/8 - In a shocking development, the Angels have stolen the spotlight that belonged to the Miami Marlins for the first three days of the Winter Meetings, reportedly agreeing to deals with first baseman Albert Pujols and starting pitcher C.J. Wilson

Offseason Needs: None
Potential Position Battles: TBD

Do I see a trade coming? Morales or Trumbo for more starting pitching?

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... December 8, 2011 at 1:56 PM

Not sure. I think they have enough pitching now. Looking at the roster, I think their biggest need is a left-handed bat in the middle of the order. The pre-injury Kendrys Morales would be a perfect fit. He'd have to DH, though. I don't think they'll trade him because his value is down. Trumbo gives them depth and power. Not sure it's necessary to trade him just because he won't play regularly.

First place I go after major singing is this awesome website to see projected lineup.

Thanks Chris. I enjoy looking at lineups after a major signing or trade. It's why I started the website.

No chance Trout is on the bench. AAA is calling.

Ideally, and most likely, he gets regular AB's in the minors to start the year. But I'd like to see a veteran 4th OF brought into the mix before I'd be certain it will happen. Scioscia is pretty good at rotating guys in and out of the lineup so Trout could get 3-4 starts per week and play defense/pinch run late in the games he doesn't start. If they think Trout can help them win games, he'll be in the big leagues. I'd expect this AL West battle between them and the Rangers to go down to the wire.

That lineup looks less intimidating than those of the Cards in '07 and '08. Until Trout can take over full time duties its not very dynamic either IMO. Yes Pujols is very nice, but there are a lot of diminishing talents around him.

Pujols changes an entire offense, but pitchers can easily game plan their way around ever facing him. Not as much punch behind him as there was in St. Louis no matter what glorified genius' say in Cali.

His plate discipline and batting eye have significantly diminished since mid season 2010. If he can change that then look out but if not, ... who knows

Unless Trumbo can find a position, not much bop behind the mang

If Morales can return to his pre-injury form of 2009, it would give them that much-needed power bat in the middle of the lineup behind Pujols. But you're right. It's not that intimidating 1-thru-9 right now, on paper, and Pujols could be pitched around alot.

ok

trumbo would take the DH with this team, not abreu.
i think the lineup is more likley
aybar
bourjos
hunter
pujols
wells
trumbo
kendrick

or kendrick 3rd Hunter 5th.

I agree that Abreu is likely odd man out... reports today are that he would like a trade... but I see Pujols cemented in the 3-hole.

A lot will have to do with the status of Kendrys Morales. Can't believe that broken leg has taken a year-and-a-half to heal and still may not be better. He may be the first player in MLB history to have his last AB be a walk-off GSHR. (Makes me worry about Buster Posey, cause he seems to have had a similar injury.)

Pujols could break bonds' intentional walks record in this lineup

Look for Cantu to win the starting 1B job for the Angels this spring.

Ryan said... January 8, 2012 at 10:33 AM

Been thinking about it... just don't see why Mgmt would want Trout breaking camp in a bench role... what would be the point?

I think either he is in the opening day starting line-up or heads to AAA for a month or so...

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... January 8, 2012 at 3:19 PM

If Wells and Abreu are productive in the spring, and Trumbo is healthy, it definitely makes more sense to start Trout in AAA. I've been holding off on changing the projection, thinking they would soon get a veteran OF to fill the bench. Langerhans could be that guy, although there are a few free agents that could also fit.

Is Morales an everyday player once/if he's healthy? Or is destined for a platoon at DH with Trumbo and Abreu unless there's a trade?

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... January 11, 2012 at 2:01 PM

If he gets back to where he was before his injury, he has to be the everyday DH. He was a beast in 2009. I could see a trade, most likely with Trumbo.

Chris Dunham said... January 19, 2012 at 10:19 PM

I'm interested to see where Pujols hits. Maybe it has been announced and I missed it but I'm a Tigers fan and lamented that Leyland hit Cabrera 4th while LaRussa hit Pujols 3rd. Tigs have no top of the order OBP so should be a no brainer to hit him 3rd. I bet Scioscia puts Pujols in 3 hole like you have projected.

I see Kendrick projected to bat 2nd. Loving that. Is there any proof behind this projection?

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... March 5, 2012 at 10:46 AM

Just today's lineup, which had him 2nd and originally had Abreu 6th before he was scratched due to illness.

Astro said... March 5, 2012 at 11:04 AM

Awesome. Thanks for the quick response! Setting up my tiers, and Howie just jumped one if this holds true. Batting ahead of Puji, I think he sees a lot more pitches...
