CINCINNATI REDS
OFFSEASON PREVIEWposted 9/21/2011
The first line of business could be as simple as exercising the $12 million club option for second baseman Brandon Phillips. General Manager Walt Jocketty says Phillips will be back, although Phillips would like a multi-year extension and has said that it would be a 'slap in his face' if they picked up the option without extending the contract. The 30 year-old is having another terrific season (.294 BA, 18 HR, 81 RBI, 35 2B, 11 SB) and has a .970 OPS from the leadoff spot. Without Phillips, the team's top priority would be finding a second baseman and leadoff hitter. Considering there is no viable option ready to take over at second base and center fielder Drew Stubbs and his 200 strikeouts aren't a good fit in the leadoff spot, I fully expect Phillips to return.
Alonso will be a Padre in 2012.
Picture courtesy of Icon Sports Media, Inc.
First basemanJoey Votto and right fielder Jay Bruce will once again hit in the middle of the lineup and third baseman Scott Rolen is expected to be fully recovered from arthroscopic shoulder surgery by the start of the season. Just in case, the team has Juan Francisco, Todd Frazier, and Miguel Cairo ready to fill in once again at the hot corner. Shortstop Zack Cozart is also expected to be ready after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his non-throwing elbow in August. Catcher Devin Mesoraco should win the starting job but Ryan Hanigan is a capable option if he's not ready. Yonder Alonso belongs in a big league lineup but he's blocked by Votto at first base. Left field is his to lose if he can improve enough defensively. The 24 year-old, who is hitting .341 with 5 HR in 41 games, will train hard during the offseason in preparation of being the everyday left fielder. A trade is also a possibility.
Expected to be a strength going into the season, the starting rotation has been a bit of a disappointment. Opening Day starter Edinson Volquez has had trouble finding any consistency and ended up spending more than two months in the minors. Travis Wood also struggled before being sent to the minors in June. Bronson Arroyo, who agreed to a three-year, $35 million extension before the season, has pitched through multiple injuries while posting a 5.20 ERA and allowing 44 home runs. Homer Baileyand Johnny Cueto both started the season on the DL, although Cueto came back to post a 2.31 ERA in 24 starts before a strained lat ended his season earlier this month. Mike Leake has also pitched well in his second big league season. Five of those six are expected to fill out the 2012 rotation, although there is talk that Aroldis Chapman could get a chance to start.
Whether Chapman starts or relieves could depend on what the Reds do to address their bullpen this offseason. Like Phillips, closer Francisco Cordero has a $12 million club option for next season. He's had a solid season (2.43 ERA, 34 Sv in 40 chances), but the price tag might be too high for a 36 year-old who has a career-low 5.4 K/9. If he doesn't return, Chapman could move into the closer's role. If he does return, or if the Reds acquire a closer this winter and possibly another reliable setup man, Chapman could be rotation-bound. Jose Arredondo, Bill Bray, Nick Masset, and Logan Ondrusek will all be in the mix for late-inning setup roles.
•UPDATE 10/7 - Chapman is expected to transition back to a starter's role, first in Instructional League before heading to Winter Ball. I wouldn't consider the move official until the Reds can add a closer (or re-sign Cordero) and maybe a setup man to take Chapman's spot in the 'pen.
•UPDATE 10/31 - Cordero's club option was declined, Phillips' club option was exercised. •UPDATE 12/5 - Baker said that Hanigan is likely to get the majority of starts over Mesoraco because of the learning curve. I would expect that to change and see Mesoraco in the lineup 4-5 days per week by mid-season. •UPDATE 12/17 - Mat Latos was acquired from the Padres for Alonso, Volquez, Yasmani Grandal, and Bradley Boxberger. Latos, who is under team control through 2015, will likely be the #2 starter behind Cueto.
The Red's are going to be a very good offensive club with alonso taking left field. this will be a fun team to watch hit. can't say the same for their starting pitching though
The Reds have exercised the 2012 option on the contract of 2B Brandon Phillips; declined the 2012 option on the contract of RHP Francisco Cordero; outrighted to Louisville RHP Jared Burton and RHP Daryl Thompson; selected the contract of OF Denis Phipps; LHP Matt Maloney was claimed off waivers by the Twins.

Thanks. Once Baseball Prospectus release their rankings, I'll update the rankings on this page. Too confusing to have 2012 rankings for one publication and 2011 rankings for another.
Any hopes that the Reds might move Chapman back to the rotation any time soon are on hold after he came up with a sore shoulder in the Arizona Fall League. As a result, they scrapped plans to let him start in winter ball.
How long is Cozart looking to be out for? He showed me a lot last year. Real grinder
Looks to be one of the best if not the best hitting team in the central baring any more moves by the red birds or brewers. Though i'm not sure of Alonso's staying power in LF. That will be an interesting Adam Dunn like journey though some strongly disagree with that sentiment.
Cozart is expected to be ready for the start of the season but you can never be sure with a recovery from Tommy John surgery. Keeping Janish around is probably a good idea and maybe even bringing in another veteran who can play SS, just in case.
I wouldn't expect Hamilton until around 2014 so need to worry about it yet. They'll know if Cozart is a keeper after this season. Has some offensive upside, so we'll see. If Hamilton can progress with the bat and gets on base enough to be a regular leadoff man, he could be the premier base stealer in the league once he arrives.
If he's consistently throwing strikes for a good 4-5 starts in a row, they have to make room for him in the rotation or bullpen. Who's out really depends on who's pitching the best out of Leake, Bailey, and Arroyo. If all are healthy and pitching well, they could have him pitch out of the 'pen. Nice weapon to have for either role.
I don't think they have enough starting pitching depth after losing Volquez and Wood. Baley is almost a guarantee t go on the DL at least once, and Cueto is injury-prone, too. they need somebody besides LeChre and Chapman.
The Reds announced that they signed Ron Mahay and Clay Zavada with invites to Spring Training. I didn't see it listed on their chart, but they are on the Reds roster. Also, if not any problem, could you include uniform numbers?
I'd still have Heisey as the starting LF'er as for now. It'll come down to a spring training battle - and even then both will get plenty of time in the field, but Ludwick coming off such a putrid season he has to be projected as the #4/vet as of now.
I think Heisey will still get his AB's but Ludwick could bounce back after having his power drained by Petco Park after he was acquired in July 2010. Even after Heisey put up solid #s in 2010, the Reds don't seem committed to him as the regular LF. Any particular reason why, in your opinion?
Too complicated on the website until I re-design. If you're interested in helping enter uniform #'s in my database, which I'll be using for the magazine and eventually the new website, please contact me at mlbdepthcharts@gmail.com. Thanks!
Valaika will likely start the year on the dl. I haven't heard any recent updates on him but it's highly unlikely he'll be ready - will likely miss S.T. The Reds will wait on burning yet another option (his last I believe) on him while they can just stick him on the dl. By the time he's ready and served time on rehab in AAA, who knows there might be a spot open on the 25 man and no point in optioning him.
If they are OK with this defense, he could be Rolen's successor in 2013. If not, it could definitely be time to trade him. I believe he's out of options.
Dusty Baker on Ludwick signing via cincinnati.com.....
“I’m excited about this team,” Baker said. “I really like what we’ve done. We’ve shored up our team. We’ve added some real quality players.”
On Ludwick: “He’s a guy I’ve always liked. I think he’s a great addition to the outfield. He helps with Drew Stubbs, Jay Bruce and especially Chris Heisey. (Ludwick) can play all three outfield spots. He’s had a couple of down years. But he’s a guy who will benefit from playing in our ballpark.”
Who starts in left field? “I don’t know. Ludwick is going to play. But I don’t want to thwart the progress on Chris Heisey. I had a long talk with Ludwick. I told him everybody on my team plays. . . Heisey has earned to the chance to play.”
Dusty's answer was 'I don't know ...', which makes sense until he sees how Ludwick looks in Spring Training. I know Heisey is probably going to play a lot. It just won't be all in LF, as with Ludwick. I can see a pretty equal share of AB's between Heisey, Ludwick, and Stubbs. There's just no way to currently show that in one projected lineup. You also have to take into account Dusty's tendency to play veterans over younger players. I think he'll go with the hot hand but he'll get Ludwick a good opportunity to bounce back.
I'm not sure how you're going about listing the nonroster invitees (some teams you have 40 man players listed first - some not)...but here is the Reds list if you were waiting for something official...
Those are the exact players I have listed. Willie Harris also gets an invite. I am listing all 40-man guys first but must've skipped over the Reds. Thanks for letting me know.
Chapman is transitioning back to being a starter and wasn't able to pitch in the Winter League to start the process. So he's now a bit behind where they would've wanted him going into Spring Training. He also needs some time in AAA to show that he can throw strikes consistently. With that said, he could win a spot if he pitches well in the spring.
1. C Devin Mesoraco: Rates as a 65 on the scouting scale — that’s a perennial all-star.
2. INF Billy Hamilton: Probably the fastest player in baseball. Probably still two to three years away.
3. 1B Yonder Alonso: Traded.
4. C Yasmani Grandal: Traded.
5. SS Zack Cozart: Dusty Baker called him the most complete player he’s gotten out of the Reds’ system.

24. 3B Sean Buckley: Son of Reds scouting director Chris Buckley. Hit .289 with 14 homers and 41 RBI in 225 at-bats at Billings.
25. C Tucker Barnhart: Very good defensively. Could end up backing up Mesoraco down the line.
26. 3B David Vidal: Hit .280 with 20 homers and 85 RBI for Dayton last year.
27. LHP Donnie Joseph: Third rounder in 2009. Had a rough year last year — 1-3, 6.94 ERA at Double-A.

Gabriel Rosa, 3B: 2011 second-round pick is raw, but has the potential for plus power and defense. 16. Tony Cingrani, LHP: 2011 third-rounder has crazy number in pro debut, but projects for many as reliever. 17. Ryan Wright, 2B: Overachiever with more skills than tools, but hard not to like.
Juan Francisco has yet to work out with the club due to injury....if he can't return soon the Reds may go slow with him opening up a possibility of Frazier, Valaika, Janish, or Harris making the opening day club while Francisco starts on the DL.
I had Ludwick in there most of the offseason until enough people convinced me to change it. I think they'll split time with Ludwick getting more time in LF and Heisey getting some AB's in CF, as well. I could have either of them in there and it would make sense to me. At least until Dusty names one of them the starter, which I don't think he'll do.
Going against my instincts here and just basing it on Frazier's performance, which was far superior to Harris'. Still, Dusty loves the vets. He does need a lefty off the bench. We'll see what happens.
If Frazier doesn't make it that's a shame, but if Heisey (and his reverse splits) is doing most of the starting they have to get a lefty bat for late innings...if not opposing teams will relief specialist them into the ground. With Rolen's injury history it would be nice if Frazier were starting in LOU at 3rd fulltime in the belief he'll be his replacement. Granted Harris' splits against righties in the past have been atrocious but there is no one else (perhaps a waiver claim - but doubtful).
I don't know. I'm kind of impressed by his 3 BB/14 K performance this spring. Ondrusek was good, too. We'll see who Dusty goes with the first time his team has a 1-2 run lead in the 7th and 8th.

15. Gabriel Rosa, 3B: 2011 second-round pick is raw, but has the potential for plus power and defense.
16. Tony Cingrani, LHP: 2011 third-rounder has crazy number in pro debut, but projects for many as reliever.
17. Ryan LaMarre, OF: 2010 second-rounder has speed and contact ability, but leaves scouts underwhelmed with overall hitting.
18. Tucker Barnhart, C: Will get to the big leagues on defensive chops alone, but backup bat.
19. Juan Duran, OF: Finally began to untap the power in 2011, but is still uncoordinated after growing to six-foot-seven.
Willie Harris' chances definitely improve. He is the lone lefty, which they lack off the bench, and Dusty Baker loves the veterans.
Bill Bray has a groin pull and may not be ready for opening day - Dusty Baker said Chapman is always an option.
I heard. I'll be keeping close tabs on all the injuries that are starting to pile up.
Heisey over Ludwick in LF???
I had Ludwick in there most of the offseason until enough people convinced me to change it. I think they'll split time with Ludwick getting more time in LF and Heisey getting some AB's in CF, as well. I could have either of them in there and it would make sense to me. At least until Dusty names one of them the starter, which I don't think he'll do.
I still think Harris makes the club over Frazier, they have to have a lefthanded hitter on the bench.
For the love of jebus, please swap Arredondo and Ondrusek...Arredondo walks way too many people to be used as a setup man.
I don't know. I'm kind of impressed by his 3 BB/14 K performance this spring. Ondrusek was good, too. We'll see who Dusty goes with the first time his team has a 1-2 run lead in the 7th and 8th.
The Reds officially purchased the contract of Willie Harris and placed Madson on the 60 day dl today. I just heard it on WLW700.
