BALTIMORE ORIOLES
OFFSEASON PREVIEWposted 9/7/2011
On paper, the lineup of the O's looks just fine with J.J. Hardy, Adam Jones(pictured), Nick Markakis, and Matt Wieters all solid players in their prime. A healthy Brian Roberts and Luke Scott would help tremendously, although there's no guarantee that's going to happen. Scott, in fact, is a non-tender candidate as he enters his final year of arbitration where he'd likely be due more than the $6.4M he made this season if tendered a deal. He is expected to be ready for Spring Training after undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum. Robert Andino and Ryan Adams have actually done a solid job filling in for Roberts at 2B and would be in line to do so again if the concussion-like symptoms continue to keep him off the field.

While the team may just let Josh Bell, Chris Davis, and possibly Adams and Andino battle it out for the starting third baseman job, Nolan Reimold isn't likely going into Spring Training without competition for the starting left field gig. Besides the pitching staff, finding an upgrade in left field may be the team's top offseason priority. Having a strikeout-prone player such as Bell or Davis at the hot corner across from first baseman Mark Reynolds, who is approaching 200 strikeouts this season, may not be ideal so I believe they'll at least look around for a better option.
The starting pitching staff remains a mess with so many young prospects failing to live up to expectations. Chris Tillman is still only 23 years and old and continues to show signs of being a very good pitcher, but remains very inconsistent. Brian Matusz has allowed 15 HR in 43 IP and was recently removed from the rotation. Whether he's injured or not, the O's have to be very concerned with their once-prized prospect. There is reason for hope as Zach Britton appears to have gotten over a mid-season funk with three straight victories (18 IP, 3 ER, 14 H, 8 BB, 15 K in those 3 starts). The 23 year-old was also 5-2 with a 2.35 ERA in his first 10 big league starts. Jake Arrieta was also pitching well (12 of 22 quality starts) before a fibrous mass above his elbow ended his season. The O's will likely try to bring in a veteran this offseason but Jim Johnson, who is reportedly being considered for a rotation spot, could be a wildcard for one of the last spots. Staff ace Jeremy Guthrie could be shopped but I'm not sure that's the greatest idea considering the state of the rotation.
After trading away Koji Uehara, who was signed through 2012, the O's have put themselves in a tough situation going into the offseason. Lefty Mike Gonzalezwas also dealt away, although he was set to become a free agent anyways. They'll have to replace two very good veteran relief pitchers. There are some good young pitchers who will audition for a chance to set up for whoever closes, either Kevin Gregg or Johnson if he doesn't start. Pedro Strop and Troy Patton, are in that mix, whileEddie Gamboa, Sean Gleason, and Cole McCurry are all names to keep an eye on in Spring Training. Unless they can bring in another experienced veteran or two to help in the 7th and 8th innings, Johnson will likely remain in the bullpen, as well as starting candidates Brad Bergesen and Alfredo Simon.
UPDATE 12/12 - Scott will be reportedly be non-tendered, saving the team close to $7 million.
If Matusz doesn't turn things around real quick in Spring Training, Hunter would definitely get a shot in the rotation. They need Matusz to pitch well, though. Not sure what happened last year but this is a guy who was one of the top pitching prospects in the game a few years ago. I expect him to get every chance to win a spot.
Hunter seemed to throw much harder when moved to the 'pen. I wouldn't be surprised to see him get a shot in the 7th or 8th inning eventually.
The only teams I've heard connected with Cordero, or any late-inning reliever for that matter over the past few weeks, are the O's and Angels. Hard to say who would be the odd man out. There are as many as 7-8 pitchers fighting for the last 2-3 rotation spots and at least that many fighting for 3-4 bullpen spots. Cordero-Johnson-Gregg-Simon-Patton is pretty solid if they can pay up for him.
Fielder to the Orioles would be a great fit, would probably force Reynolds and Davis to compete for 3B/DH ABs, as well as move Reimold to LF. But imagine how many HRs Prince would hit in that bandbox!
I really think you have the Bullpen a little mixed up. I see no way that Pedro Strop does not make the club. He is probably their 3rd best reliever behind Johnson and Lindstrom in my opinion.
Also, Showalter has already stated that Reimold will be given every opportunity to be the starter in LF. I would switch Reimold and Chavez.
Excellent site though, I know these projections are hard as heck to make!
I believe Reimold is the starting LF this season. I was just watching the last spring game, and the announcers said he's entering the season knowing he's the starter for the whole year. Obviously this can change, but for now it looks like he's the starter and leading off.
Wada has been pitching. Doesn't mean he won't start the season on the DL (recovery from an earlier injury) but please send me a link with that info. Thanks!

if bell makes the team reynolds will DH, if not Davis at 3rd.
Is Davis a better defensive 1B than Reynolds? I really doubt that they're done adding players. Could look much different by Spring Training.
oh yeah davis is a very capable with the glove.
I think they'll use davis at 3rd, reynolds and 1st and sign a DH. maybe matsui, or kubel.
Hunter not Matusz in the starting rotation.

Jason,
What are the odds BAL signs Cordero? Who do you think would be moved from the pen (possibly the roster) for him?

^I don't think they'd have a problem paying for him, since there are now rumors they may go after Fielder.
They have plenty of $$$ but Duquette seems to be waiting for prices to drop. Not a bad strategy if he can land a few bargains late in the offseason.

Pat Neshek is not a starter..
"C Steve Lerud (12/9: signed w/ARI)" He signed with the Phillies, not Arizona.
Thanks for catching those errors!

Also Strop is out of Option if I am not mistaken
Looked it up. Strop is out of options. I thought O'Day and Hunter were but I guess not. Makes a big difference in the projection. Thanks Tucker.
I noticed you have Timothy Bascom on the 40 man roster but he is not listed on the 40 on the Orioles website.
Formatting error. Thanks!

Wada will be on DL in the start Os the season, Hunter will be in the starting pitching rotation

Seems risky to start a rookie from overseas on opening day. You don't think it'll be hammel?
I think it could go either way. Chen has been consistently good in his starts and he's not a kid. He's 26 with a lot of experience in Japan.
I am reading that Patton will be stretched out to be the Long Reliever.
Thanks! I know Phillips has been a starter so I thought he would fit there. Can you send me a link?
Its on Brittany's mlb.com Os will blog latest roster update.
