*MLBDepthCharts.com considers any player not on a team's 40-man roster, in AAA, or ranked as a top 10 prospect by Baseball America or top 11 prospect by Baseball Prospectus before the 2010 season as an 'under the radar' player.

Under the Radar Minor League NL Hitting Performance of the Week
LHP Marc Cohoon, Double-A Binghamton (NYM)

season stats: 1-0, 0.47 ERA, 19 IP, 16 H, 3 BB, 20 K in 3 starts
April 20-April 26: 1-0, 7 IP, 0 ER, 5 H, 0 BB, 11 K in 1 start

As expected, pitching performances leveled out this week as the rotations came back around a second and/or third time. Last week’s UTR picks continued to dominate, however, as Cameron Selik and Shawn Tolleson’s scoreless innings streaks were extended. Cohoon also picked up were he left off when he made the UTR twice in 2010, as the honorable mention in May and the POTW in June. This will most likely be the last time Cohoon will be mentioned in this feature as the 23 year-old’s performance this past week could be the yardstick for a promotion to AAA.

The 2008 12th round pick out of North Central Texas College began last season with Lo-A Savannah, where he dominated (7-1, 1.30 ERA) before skipping Hi-A to Double-A Binghamton. The left-hander struggled in his first four starts, going 1-3 with a 7.24, but made a strong turn-around (4-1, 1.63) to finish the season and was slotted as the 22nd ranked Mets prospect in Baseball America going into this season. In his 2011 return, Cohoon has pitched well enough in his first 3 starts to be 3-0, but his bullpen has failed to hold the lead. His 11 strikeouts on April 20th was a career high and increased this K:BB rate to 3:1 for the season, which is also the rate for his pro career in 329.2 innings. While Cohoon has excellent control and works the zone at all corners, his fastball is only in the high 80’s and can touch 90 when he’s finishing off a batter. His battery mate, catcher Kai Gronauer, describes his curveball as “sharp as hell”. He is currently working on a 4th pitch that is a combination of a cutter/slider that should help him succeed further in his quest to eventually pitch at Citi Field.

Relief Pitcher of the Week
RHP Stephen Ames, Hi-A Rancho Cucamonga (LAD): 1.08 ERA, 8.1 IP, ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 15 K, 6 Sv in 9 games; 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 6 K, 2 Sv in 2 games this week
