why Sutton and not Iglesias?

Sutton is more versatile, better-suited for bench role. Had good spring. Iglesias needs to play everyday and get ready for potential starting gig with Sox in 2012.

Hard to say without knowing how much money they plan on spending. Can't predict who they'll re-sign or acquire via free agency/trade or which options they'll pick up. Without them doing anything, this is what I have:

25-MAN ROSTER (*indicates left-handed batter **indicates switch-hitter)
Starting Lineup
1 CF Jacoby Ellsbury*
2 LF Carl Crawford*
3 2B Dustin Pedroia
4 1B Adrian Gonzalez*
5 DH Kevin Youkilis
6 3B Jed Lowrie**
7 RF Josh Reddick BA#7 BP#3
8 C Jarrod Saltalamacchia**
9 SS Jose Iglesias

Bench
C TBD
IF Yamaico Navarro BP#7
IF/OF Drew Sutton**
OF Darnell McDonald

Starting Rotation
1 RHP Josh Beckett
2 LHP Jon Lester
3 RHP Clay Buchholz
4 RHP John Lackey
5 LHP Andrew Miller

Bullpen
CL RHP Daniel Bard
SU RHP Matt Albers
SU RHP Bobby Jenks
MID LHP Franklin Morales
MID RHP Michael Bowden
MID RHP Scott Atchison
LR RHP Alfredo Aceves

Ryan Kalish would also be in the mix for a roster spot, as would Ryan Lavarnway, although I see them acquiring another catcher in free agency or via trade. If Big Papi re-signs, Youk would stay at 3B and Jed Lowrie would play mostly SS. That would give Iglesias more time since he might not be ready to be an adequate offensive shortstop. They could also bring Scutaro back, although I don't think Iglesias needs to be blocked for another full year. I also think there's a good chance they re-sign Papelbon, which would pretty much push everyone in the bullpen down a notch.

I see Doubront or Tazawa taking that 5th spot from Miller by 2012 if not by Sept 2011

I've read rumors that Youkilis could see his Boston exit soon. Do you think he'll be around until Middlebrooks is the starting 3b?

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... August 10, 2011 at 3:52 PM

He's signed through 2012 with a $13M club option for 2013. If Middlebrooks is ready after next season, as many expect he will be, they could decline Youk's option. If he's their best DH option at the time, they could keep him. I imagine they could shop him this winter if they think Lowrie can be their everyday 3B and some combo of Scutaro/Iglesias can play SS.

Lavrnway is the dh. ortiz is not on the dl but he is hurt and is not the dh

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... August 21, 2011 at 7:53 PM

The yellow symbol just means he's hurt and day-to-day. DL list underneath roster.

BUT lavarnway is starting and batting 6 and 7 as the DH.

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... August 24, 2011 at 9:55 AM

Not when the regular DH is healthy. These lineups on the team pages are projections of a team's 'regular lineup' if everyone on the active roster is healthy. It would be too hard right now to keep track of all the players that are 'day-to-day' and removing them and putting them back in the lineup when they return. In Ortiz' case, I probably could've removed him knowing that he was going to be out for at least 4-5 days. But for the most part, a player who is 'day-to-day' can be back in 1 day or 1 week. The injury symbol just gives readers a heads-up that a player has an injury and is considered 'day-to-day' if they are not on the DL. Hope that clears it up and I hope to implement a better way of tracking this in the future.

What's the deal with the way you show the starting rotation? Why isn't it...
1~2 Beckett/Lester
3~4 Bedard/Lackey
5~6 Wakefield/Miller

~ = or vise versa

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... August 29, 2011 at 1:10 PM

Unfortunately, there's not much thought that goes into it after getting the correct order when the season starts and besides not putting a guy who is obviously a #4 or 5 in the #1 spot. It's a bit hard to keep up with during the season so it's low on my priority list for 2011. My goal for 2012 is to always keep it in the correct order starting with my choice for who is the true ace on the staff. Feel free to send me any suggestions on how you'd like the rotation displayed.

I think the rotation should be displayed by putting the opening day starter (Lester) first and the remaining starters in the order they are being used (currently: Lester, Bedard, Lackey, Beckett) with the exception of starters who are not used quite as regularly but are given starts when possible (Wakefield and Miller) who are then listed at the end of the rotation in an arbitrary order. If the opening day starter is not in the rotation, whoever was 2nd on opening day (Lackey) should be listed first with the same method used to determine the order of the rest. If he too is not in the rotation, use whoever was 3rd on opening day (Buchholz), and if he too is not there, use no. 4 from opening day (Beckett), and if he too is not there, use no. 5 from opening day (Matsuzaka). If the entire opening day rotation is not in the rotation, be arbitrary. Obviously, this does not apply to playoffs since the rotation is set differently.
