Transaction Post/Spreadsheet Delay

Two things I was hoping to get done are likely not going to get completed today. A new transactions feature that would help readers get caught up on all roster activity around the league from the past 7-10 days will have to wait until next week. However, I have adjusted the sidebar so the last 25 transactions can now be viewed. Also, 'The Spreadsheets at MLBDepthCharts.com' will not be fully updated until early next week. I'm working on getting caught up now but after falling 10 days behind and with all of the trades going down in the last few days, it doesn't look like it's going to happen by this afternoon. I'll keep you updated on Twitter and Facebook and let you know once they are ready.

Pickups - July 27, 2010

"Pickups" is a weekly column that highlights current players I would target who are available on the waiver market in a majority of fantasy leagues.
Luke Scott, 1B/OF (BAL): Since returning from the DL, Scott has done nothing but hit for average and power. He's gone deep 4 times in only 7 games and collected 8 RBI along the way. His average sits at a .292 mark with a robust .924 OPS. With the return of Brian Roberts, Scott will find himself comfortable in the cleanup spot hitting in front of the consistent Nick Markakis.

*Players on the verge of a big league call-up are considered to be 'Knocking Down the Door'.
Aroldis Chapman, LHP - Triple-A Louisville (CIN): The 22 year-old, who has reportedly reached 103 mph on the radar gun, is making progress as a reliever and could prove to be what the Reds are looking for in the late innings. With a strong lineup and lots of starting pitching depth, the Reds are likely one dominant reliever away from being a team that can run away in the NL Central and go deep in the playoffs.

*Players on the verge of a big league call-up are considered to be 'Knocking Down the Door'.
Peter Bourjos, CF - Triple-A Salt Lake (LAA): The 23 year-old has cracked the list for the second time in three weeks. Two weeks ago, Bourjos had been hitting .548 over his previous 10 games. You'd think that pace would be hard to maintain but the right-handed batter has nearly duplicated those numbers over his past 10 games (.521 BA, 3 HR, 5 2B, 11 RBI, 4 SB), including nine hits in his last two games, and is very likely the hottest hitter in all of baseball at the moment.

PROSPECT TALK: Who You Should Be Watching

The most difficult thing about following prospects is the sheer volume of what there is to follow. It’s virtually impossible for one person to stay on top of everything that happens throughout all levels of minor league baseball, so sometimes it’s nice to step back and determine what is really important.
Which players are going to matter in 2-3 years? Who are the truly impact players? Who are the most intriguing? Regardless of talent, which players move the meter the most?

Two new features will be added to MLBDepthCharts.com in the near future. One is already in the works and probably won't be completely finished for a few months, but it should be helpful in many aspects. I have begun to create player pages, starting with the Atlanta Braves major league roster (almost done!). I'll start with any player on the 40-man roster and any other notable prospects. After I've done all 30 teams, I'll come back around and start creating pages for less notable minor leaguers.

Dillon Gee, RHP - Triple-A Buffalo (NYM): The 24 year-old has had an up-and-down season but he couldn't have picked a better time for one of his strongest starts (8 IP, ER, 3 H, BB, 8 K on July 18th). With Hisanori Takahasi having allowed 6 ER's in three of his last five starts, chances are that the Mets will be looking for a new #5 starter in the very near future.

*Players on the verge of a big league call-up are considered to be 'Knocking Down the Door'.
Brandon Belt, 1B - Double-A Richmond (SF): This may be a bit of a reach with the Giants likely to be more focused on adding a bat through the trade market as opposed to calling on a Double-A first baseman who is in his first full season in professional baseball after being taken in the 5th Round of the '09 draft. In addition, Belt has only played 13 games in the Eastern League since his promotion from Hi-A, where he put up huge numbers (.383 BA, 10 HR, 62 RBI, 58 BB, 18 SB), even by California League standards. But the 22 year-old, who has gone from a pre-season 'Under the Radar Breakout Candidate' to 'Knocking Down the Door' in just a few months, has not slowed down a bit since exiting the hitter-friendly league. The left-handed batter has a hit in 12 of 13 games with Richmond, including 21 hits in his first 52 AB's (.404 BA), with 5 HR's and 9 RBI's.

One Step Closer for Ackley and Moustakas
posted 7/16/10 9:16 AM PST
by Jeff Moore
One of the few things that could derail the potential Minor League Player of the Year season Mike Moustakas is having would be a promotion to the major leagues. As of yesterday, he's one step closer to that reality. The Royals announced on Wednesday that they have promoted their power hitting third baseman to Triple-A Omaha, leaving Double-A behind with a .347/21/76 line there during his 66 game stint. The 21 year-old now joins Alex Gordon and Kila Ka’aihue in an Omaha lineup that may ultimately have more power than its major league counterpart. Assuming Moustakas continues his hot hitting, it is now very possible that he could make a September cameo in Kansas City.

1. I'm counting 18 teams that are still realistically within reach of a playoff spot, including the 42-46 Marlins (7 games behind Wildcard Leader), who are just barely hanging on by a thread. That leaves 12 teams that are potential sellers, 17 teams that are potential buyers, and one (Florida) that is still on the fence but reportedly leaning towards selling. Who are the biggest remaining players on the trade block?

If a veteran player on a team that is out of contention is producing at a high level, that player's name is likely to come up in trade talks. Now if that player is producing at a level that is as good as it's ever been, the team could try to 'sell high' on a player whose value may never be greater. As opposed to some of the players on this 'Hardest to Trade Players in Baseball' list, whose teams are looking to sell them at their absolutely lowest value.

"Pickups" is a weekly column that highlights current players I would target who are available on the waiver market in a majority of fantasy leagues.
Clint Barmes, SS (COL): After a slow start, Barmes has mashed in the last few weeks, collecting 30 hits in his last 90 at bats (.333) with a solid 17/3/13/2 line over that span. The one blemish I have is Manager Jim Tracy seems reluctant to move him out of the 8-hole despite his recent surge. The #2 spot would be quite suitable, in my opinion. He's definitely one of my top go-to options if your fantasy lineup recently experienced an injury in the middle of the infield.

Hardest to Trade Players in Baseball

Every season, there are more than a few teams trying to sweep their mistakes under the rug, hoping that some desperate team will take on a player (and at least part of the player's salary) whose value has decreased significantly. Sometimes, teams will have to swap bad contracts and hope that a change of scenery will do their new player some good. A recent example of this would be the Milton Bradley-Carlos Silva deal of this past offseason. The Cubs actually ended up saving $5M in the deal and it was the player that they received, Silva, that has resurrected his career while Bradley continues to struggle with injuries, anger, and a lack of production.

The Cubs actually ended up saving $5M in the deal and it was the player that they received, Silva, that has resurrected his career while Bradley continues to struggle with injuries, anger, and a lack of production.
Knocking Down the Door (Pitchers) - July 12, 2010

*Players on the verge of a big league call-up are considered to be 'Knocking Down the Door'.
Michael Bowden, RHP - Triple-A Pawtucket (BOS): Prior to tossing six shutout innings on May 31st, Bowden was 1-2 with a 5.83 ERA over his first 9 starts. Since, he's turned things around, posting a 1.29 ERA in his last four starts before the team moved the 23 year-old right-hander to the bullpen last week. While a move to the 'pen is usually a bad thing, Bowden's move was made in preparation for a possible big league promotion later in the season. The Red Sox bullpen has struggled at times and Manny Delcarmen has recently been placed on the DL with a strained forearm.

*Players on the verge of a big league call-up are considered to be 'Knocking Down the Door'.
Peter Bourjos, OF - Triple-A Salt Lake (LAA): The Angels are in excellent shape at the CF position with All-Star Torii Hunter signed through 2012 and 18 year-old Mike Trout establishing himself in 2010 as one of the best minor league prospects in baseball. Not to be overshadowed is Triple-A centerfielder Bourjos, who might be the hottest hitter in the minors during the month of July. Over his last 10 games, the 23 year-old is hitting .548 (23-for-42) with 2 HR's, 4 3B's, and 3 SB's.

Potential 'Near Major League Ready' Trade Chips

With still more than three weeks to go until the trade deadline, any non-competing teams who are now in 'seller' mode will start off by asking for the moon. Because these particular GM's that are selling off veteran players with trade value aren't exactly on safe ground with their team being out of contention and all, it is safe to assume that they're asking price does not include a package with multiple players that are more than two or three years away from the big leagues. Why? Because they might not be around when those players finally arrive in the big leagues.

In case you missed a signing or two along the way, here’s an update on which first round picks from this year have already agreed to deals. While sample sizes prohibit us from rushing to judgment on players who were drafted a month ago, I'll give you just a quick update on how they're doing so far.
