Pickups - June 30, 2010
by Hanson Wu
"Pickups" is a weekly column that highlights current players I would target who are available on the waiver market in a majority of leagues.
Gaby Sanchez, 1B (FLA): Since being promoted to the 2-hole, Sanchez has shown tremendous improvement in his production. He's had a great June to date hitting in front of Hanley Ramirez. Over 24 games, he owns a .368 average with a 1.014 OPS, including 4 HR's and 2 SB's. A very well-balanced 1B who would fit nicely in the UTIL spot on a lot of 12 team mixed rosters, I wouldn't write off an end line of about .300/95/18/85/8.

Knocking Down the Door (Pitchers) - June 28, 2010
by Jason Martinez
*Players on the verge of a big league call-up are considered to be 'Knocking Down the Door'.
Michael Pineda, RHP - Triple-A Tacoma (SEA): Things really aren't as bad as they might seem for the Mariners. Sure they're in last place and 15 games out in the AL West and their offense has been awful. But if you like starting pitching, the Mariners have plenty of it, even after they trade co-staff ace Cliff Lee in the near future. Doug Fister (3-3, 2.81 ERA in 11 starts) and Jason Vargas (6-3, 2.80 ERA in 15 starts) have been terrific, giving the team solid mid-rotation options after Felix Hernandez. Erik Bedard could also return from the DL soon (6.2 IP, 2 ER, 7 H, 0 BB, 11 K in 2 rehab starts with AZL Mariners) to take Ryan Rowland-Smith's (6.37 ERA in 13 starts) spot in the rotation. But the most intriguing option to fill out the back of the rotation could be Pineda, a 21 year-old who started the season in Double-A.

Knocking Down the Door (Position Players) - June 28, 2010
by Jason Martinez
*Players on the verge of a big league call-up are considered to be 'Knocking Down the Door'.
Brandon Allen, 1B - Triple-A Reno (ARI): A candidate to be the D'Backs' starting first baseman before Adam LaRoche was signed this offseason, Allen got off to a miserable start in his first Triple-A season with a .200 BA (17-for-85) thru his first 24 games. Sidelined for most of May with a shoulder injury, the 24 year-old has returned in top form during the month of June (1.154 OPS, 25 BB's in 24 games) as he tries to prove that he is still the team's first baseman of the future. The left-handed slugger had three hits in yesterday's game, including two doubles, five RBI's, and his 8th homer of the season, to boost his season average to .265. With the trade deadline right around the corner and LaRoche expected to be shopped aggressively by the last place D'Backs, Allen's timing couldn't be better.

Pickups - June 25, 2010
by Hanson Wu
"Pickups" is a weekly column that highlights current players I would target who are available on the waiver market in a majority of leagues.
Russell Branyan, 1B (CLE): Branyan has become a journeyman power threat who's at bats seem to end in one of three ways - walk, strikeout or home run. He has gone deep 3 times in the last 9 games and although the power comes at a price (.250 - .260 BA) he should be good for another 15 or so HR over his last 70-80 games. He improved his plate discipline significantly in June, striking out only 15 times in 70 AB's and hitting .286. This kind of production could be platooned for even better performance on a fantasy roster.

Prospects Moving Up the 'Lists'
by Jeff Moore
There is almost nothing I wouldn’t stop doing if the right countdown came on. I’ve wasted more Saturday afternoons than I care to admit waiting to see who was number one on the list of cheesiest movies, or hottest Hollywood hotties, or best/worst fill in the blank. And I have yet to find a list I agree with.
Which is, at its essence, the heart of the matter. The list.
We love lists. I don’t know if it’s us as Americans or just as human beings, but we feel the need to rate and rank everything. And certainly baseball, and more specifically in this conversation, prospects are no different.

Knocking Down the Door (Pitchers) - June 21, 2010
by Jason Martinez
*Players on the verge of a big league call-up are considered to be 'Knocking Down the Door'.
Madison Bumgarner, LHP - Triple-A Fresno (SF): The 6'4" lefty might have taken a slight step backward in his quest for a big league promotion when he earned a three-game suspension after an on-field outburst directed at an umpire but his latest strong performance (7.2 IP, 3 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 11 K) probably puts him back on track to join the Giants rotation in the very near future. On the season, the 20 year-old is now 7-1 with a 3.16 ERA in 14 starts. With today's off-day, the Giants don't have to choose a #5 starter right away but Bumgarner is likely to reach the big leagues before his 21st birthday on August 1st.

Knocking Down the Door (Position Players) - June 21, 2010
by Jason Martinez
*Players on the verge of a big league call-up are considered to be 'Knocking Down the Door'.
Michael Brantley, OF / Matt LaPorta, 1B/OF - Triple-A Columbus (CLE): It is somewhat disappointing for Indians fans to know that the two key players, Brantley and LaPorta, in the CC Sabathia deal are back in the minors after struggling at the big league level earlier in the season. However, LaPorta is killing Triple-A pitching (18-for-47, 5 HR) since his demotion and Brantley is hitting .298 with a .378 OBP in 47 games. With Grady Sizemore out for the season and Austin Kearns a likely trade target for contending teams looking for some extra pop, the Indians could have a lineup that looks something like this during the final two months of the season:

WHO'S NEXT?
by Jeff Moore
Jason Heyward started the season in the majors. So did Neftali Feliz and Brian Matusz. Stephen Strasburg made his way up this past week. So did Mike Stanton, Carlos Santana, and Pedro Alvarez. Buster Posey came up a few weeks ago.
Those are 8 of Baseball America’s top-10 prospects entering the 2010 season and they are all in the majors. The two that aren’t (Desmond Jennings and Jesus Montero) could be soon.
Which brings us to our list of who’s next.
We always want to know who’s next. Once they’re in front of us, they’re subject to over-analysis, fantasy speculation, and unwarranted expectations. But as long as they are protected by the bubble of minor league uncertainty, our favorite prospects still hold the hope of becoming the answer that everyone’s favorite struggling team is hoping will change the fate of a depressed city.
But who are they? Who is next?

Knocking Down the Door (Pitchers) - June 14, 2010
by Jason Martinez
*Players on the verge of a big league call-up are considered to be 'Knocking Down the Door'.
Jonathan Albaladejo, RHP - Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (NYY): The Yankees still have the best closer in the game, plenty of offense, and the starting pitching to repeat as World Champions. Where they could probably use some help is in the bullpen, where Chad Gaudin (7 ER in 9 IP) hasn't been the answer since returning to the team a few weeks ago and Chan Ho Park (5.71 ERA in 12 games) and Dave Robertson (6.05 ERA in 21 IP) have each struggled to return to their 2009 form. The Yankees could go after a bigger name on the trade market closer to the trading deadline but they could opt to take another look at the 27 year-old Alabaladejo, who has spent time with the team in each of the previous three seasons. With 21 saves on the season, including 12 in his last 12 appearances, and a 1.17 ERA in 27 relief appearances, the right-hander has been among the best relief pitchers in the minors in 2010. Unless the Yankees don't feel like he's an upgrade over Gaudin, he should be back in the Yankees bullpen soon.

Knocking Down the Door (Position Players) - June 14, 2010
by Jason Martinez
*Players on the verge of a big league call-up are considered to be 'Knocking Down the Door'.
Pedro Alvarez, 3B - Triple-A Indianapolis (PIT): This could be farewell to Alvarez, who could be on his way to Pittsburgh any day now. The team has already begun to prepare current third baseman Andy LaRoche for a utility role and newest big leaguers Jose Tabata (5-for-16, 2 2B) and Neil Walker (20-for-70, 5 2B) are each playing well since their arrival. With the worst record in the NL and well on their way to an 18th straight losing season, the Pirates are eager to add another piece to what is beginning to look like a very talented offense surrounding emerging star Andrew McCutchen. After getting off to a slow start in April (.224 BA, 5 HR), the 23 year-old Alvarez is batting .320 with 8 HR's, 13 2B's, 4 3B's, and 37 RBI's over his last 42 games. The only question left to answer - Where will he hit in the Pittsburgh lineup?

Pickups - June 14, 2010
by Hanson Wu
"Pickups" is a weekly column that highlights current players I would target who are available on the waiver market in a majority of leagues.
Julio Borbon, OF (TEX): One of the most intriguing players heading into 2010 league drafts - Borbon showed tremendous speed last year and Texas is easily regarded as one of the best offenses in the majors. However, he stumbled out of the gate and lost his leadoff role to Elvis Andrus. Lately, he's come back to life through a great homestand, hitting .500 over the last week (9-18). Although it's a slim possibility of him returning to the #1 spot in the lineup, he should score plenty of runs and steal bases if he can get on base.

PROSPECT TALK: Early Success Stories from Later Round Picks in '09 Draft
by Jeff Moore
Want to know why the NFL Europe folded?
(Besides the obvious confusion between football and futbol…)
Because any rookies who were any good went to the real NFL. Why don’t you watch the NBA D-League? Same thing. In hockey, there’s the AHL, but let’s face it, the NHL can barely get its own fans.
But with baseball, the minor leagues are worth following. Even the best picks (not named Mike Leake) spend time there. It’s where first round picks flame out and late round picks prove their worth.

Pickups: June 7, 2010
by Hanson Wu
"Pickups" is an article that highlights fantasy players who are currently available in a large percent of fantasy leagues, who I think can make a positive impact to a team.
Jeff Keppinger, 2B - Houston Astros: With Lance Berkman and Carlos Lee finally hitting to their potentials recently, Keppinger's value as the #2 hitter has gone up and he's strung together a solid string of games (5-game hitting streak with a run scored in each). Noted as having one of the lowest strikeout percentages of any hitter in the big leagues, he's a great candidate to hit over .300 and is eligible at both middle infield positions. Here is a fun fact: Keppinger is making contact at pitches in the zone at a 99.0% rate - in 2010 he has a career high 94.3% contact rate overall. Currently only 10% owned in Y! Leagues, I like him more than other middle infield options such as Ryan Theriot or Christian Guzman.

'Knocking Down the Door' THE POST-STANTON/STRASBURG EDITION - June 7, 2010
by Jason Martinez
In a week where we're about to see top prospects Mike Stanton and Stephen Strasburg debut in the big leagues, and two-time 'Knocking Down the Door' picks Brad Lincoln and Jesus Feliciano looking like good bets to join them in the next few days, the well has dried up a bit. There just aren't that many players this week who are forcing their way into the majors. So instead of the normal routine (if you're not sure what the normal routine is, take a look at the 'Knocking Down the Door' 2010 archive), I'll give you a quick preview of the best minor league players post-Stanton/Strasburg that should debut later this season.
NEXT IN LINE
