The Phillies finally caught up with the Braves earlier in the month and haven't looked back since, heading into the playoffs as the hottest team in baseball with 21 wins in the month of September. The Braves, meanwhile, lost 8 games in the standing to the Phillies after a losing month (13-14) but were able to maintain a 2 game Wildcard lead over the Padres heading into the last series of the regular season against a Phillies team who is likely to rest its regulars.

The Padres, who were 12-16 and must sweep the Giants (18-8 in the month) to force a one-game playoff for the NL West title, had their first losing month since July 2009. The NL Central champion Reds were just 12-15 in the month but their closest competition in the race, the St. Louis Cardinals, went just 14-15 and weren't able to make things interesting over the last few weeks.

While it was the Diamondbacks and Astros who were the surprise teams in August, it was the Chicago Cubs that have come out of their season-long coma in September (17-9). However, the Cubbies are still on pace for their worst season since 2002 when they won just 67 games.

Many of the usual suspects on September's All-Star team but check out the 6-7-8 hitters in the starting lineup. That rookie trio is part of the next wave of NL superstars...
