Transactions Recap - August 30, 2010

Two more days until rosters can expand. Here's what's happened over the past few days ...

AL EAST
Baltimore Orioles
Jim Johnson was activated from the 60-Day DL after missing time with a slight tear in his elbow. The 27 year-old, who saved 10 games for the team in '09, has tossed one scoreless inning since his return. Armando Gabino (7 ER's in 4.2 IP) was optioned to the minors and Jason Berken (torn labrum) was transferred to the 60-Day DL to create roster space.

Boston Red Sox
Hideki Okajima (5.73 ERA, 9 holds in 41 relief appearances) was activated from the DL after missing time with a strained hamstring. Michael Bowden, who allowed 3 ER's and 4 hits in 1.2 IP during his last outing, was optioned to the minors.

Tampa Bay Rays
Former NL All-Star Brad Hawpe was signed to a minor league deal and is expected to join the team before September 1st. The 31 year-old, who was hitting .255 with 7 HR's and 37 RBI's in 88 games when he was released by the Rockies, is 0-for-4 with a walk in two games for Hi-A Charlotte.

Toronto Blue Jays
Third baseman Edwin Encarnacion was placed on the DL with soreness in his left wrist. The 27 year-old is hitting .246 with 13 HR's and 36 RBI's in 80 games. Jose Bautista is expected move from the outfield to take over as the full-time third baseman. Mike McCoy was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas, where he was hitting .310 with 6 HR's and 17 SB's in 53 games.

AL CENTRAL
Chicago White Sox
Manny Ramirez was acquired in a straight waiver claim from the Dodgers. The 38 year-old, who is expected to take over full-time DH duties, has spent three stints on the DL this season but is hitting .311 with 8 HR's and 40 RBI's in 66 games. Jake Peavy, who's out for the season with a detached latissimus dorsi muscle, was transferred to the 60-Day DL.

In other news, Erick Threets, who was activated from the DL recently after a bout with turf toe, was placed back on the DL and could require Tommy John surgery if tests reveal a torn elbow ligament. The 28 year-old lefty had not allowed an earned run in 12.1 IP for the Sox. Carlos Torres was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte to take his spot in the bullpen.

Kansas City Royals
Robinson Tejeda (3.42 ERA, 7 holds in 41 relief appearances) was activated from the DL after missing the last month with a strained biceps tendon. Rookie reliever Kanekoa Texeira (4.84 ERA in 43 relief appearances) was placed on the DL with a strained right elbow.

Minnesota Twins
Angels closer Brian Fuentes was acquired for a PTBNL. The 35 year-old, who had 24 saves and a 3.52 ERA in 39 relief apperarances with the Angels, earned a save and struck out the only batter he faced in his Twins debut. Glen Perkins (10 ER in 10 IP) was optioned to the minors and Double-A reliever Loek Van Mil (6.37 ERA in 23 relief appearances) was designated for assignment to create roster space.

AL WEST
Los Angeles Angels
Brian Fuentes was traded to the Twins for a PTBNL. Fernando Rodney, who is 4-1 with a 3.76 ERA, 6 saves and 21 holds, takes over as the team's closer. Rich Thompson was activated from the DL after missing time with shoulder inflammation. The 26 year-old reliever has allowed 2 ER's in 10.2 IP this season.

Oakland Athletics
Matt Watson (6-for-30, HR, 4 RBI) was activated from the DL after missing time with kidney stones. However, the 31 year-old was outrighted off the 40-man roster and assigned to Triple-A Sacramento.

Texas Rangers
Outfielder Nelson Cruz was activated from the DL after finishing up a third stint because of a hamstring injury. The 30 year-old is hitting .320 with 16 HR's, 64 RBI's, and 15 SB's in 77 games. Brandon Boggs was optioned to the minors to make room. The team also recalled Craig Gentry from the minors and placed him on the DL with a broken wrist. By recalling him now, he'll be eligible for the post-season.

In other news, setup man Frank Francisco (3.76 ERA, 15 holds, 60 K's in 52.2 IP) was placed on the DL with a strained muscle in his ribcage. Derek Holland, who has made five starts with team, was recalled from the minors and will pitch out of the bullpen.

NL EAST
Atlanta Braves
Craig Kimbrel was recalled on August 27th, tossing one scoreless innings, and optioned back to the minors on August 29th. Starting pitcher Mike Minor was technically optioned to the minors between starts to make room for Kimbrel but was recalled in time to make his next scheduled start.

In other news, Kenshin Kawakami was recalled from the minors after making five starts and posting a 4.29 ERA for Triple-A Gwinnett. The 35 year-old will pitch out of the bullpen. Cristhian Martinez, who had a 3.05 ERA in 13 relief appearances, was optioned to the minors to make room.

New York Mets
With the team in need of another infielder because of the oblique injury to Jose Reyes, Luis Hernandez had his contract purchased and Jesus Feliciano (.275 BA in 31 games) was optioned to the minors. The 26 year-old Hernandez, who has previously spent time in the big leagues with Baltimore and Kanas City, was hitting .290 with 3 HR's and 44 RBI's in 104 games between Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Buffalo.

Philadelphia Phillies
Danys Baez (5.14 ERA, 6 holds in 45 relief appearances) was placed on the DL with back spasms and was replaced on the roster by lefty Antonio Bastardo, who was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The 23 year-old Bastardo has pitched well in the minors (2.08 ERA in 20 relief appearances) but has allowed 8 ER's in 13 IP during his four stints with the Phillies this season.

NL CENTRAL
Cincinnati Reds
Rookie Mike Leake, who was recently removed from the rotation, was placed on the DL because of shoulder fatigue. The 22 year-old, who has not spent a day in the minors as a pro, is 8-4 with a 4.23 ERA in 138.1 IP. Juan Francisco, who was hitting .286 with 18 HR's and 59 RBI's in 77 games with Triple-A Louisville, was recalled from the minors.

In other news, Micah Owings cleared waivers after being designated for assignment on August 17th and accepted a minor league assignment. The 27 year-old has pitched well since being optioned to the minors last month, posting a 2.08 ERA in five starts.

Pittsburgh Pirates
Charlie Morton, who had been 1-9 with a 9.35 ERA when he was optioned to the minors earlier in the season, was recalled from the minors to start Sunday's game. The results were not good as the 26 year-old allowed 7 ER's in 3.1 IP, raising his ERA above 10.00 and becoming the 5th Pirates pitcher to lose 10 games on the season. To make room on the roster, Justin Thomas (10.2 IP, 8 ER) was optioned to the minors.

NL WEST
Colorado Rockies
Clint Barmes was placed on the bereavement list and Manny Corpas was placed on the DL. While Barmes is expected to return soon, Corpas could be headed for Tommy John surgery if tests reveal that he has a torn elbow ligament. The 27 year-old is 3-5 with a 4.62 ERA and 10 saves in 56 relief appearances.

In corresponding roster moves, Samuel Deduno (3-1, 2.93 ERA in 6 Triple-A starts) and Franklin Morales (3-0, 2.67 ERA in 24 Triple-A relief appearances) were recalled from the minors to take their roster spots.

Los Angeles Dodgers
Ramon Troncoso was recalled from the minors to take the roster spot of Manny Ramirez, who was claimed off waivers by the White Sox. The 27 year-old Troncoso, who will be up with the team for the third time this season, has a 4.85 ERA and 7 holds in 41 relief appearances during his previous two stints.

San Diego Padres
Jerry Hairston, Jr., who is hitting .249 with 10 HR's, 50 RBI's, and 9 SB's as the team's primary leadoff man, was placed on the DL with a sprained elbow. Everth Cabrera and Luis Perdomo were recalled and Luis Durango was optioned to the minors.
