AL EAST
Boston Red Sox
One of the team's three injured catchers, Kevin Cash, was activated from the DL. The 32 year-old had been out with a strained hamstring. Dusty Brown, who had a two-run double in his only at-bat during his latest stint with the team, was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket.
New York Yankees
Javier Vazquez has been removed from the rotation, at least for one turn, and replaced by 23 year-old rookie Ivan Nova, who allowed 2 ER's in 5.1 IP in his first big league start on Monday. The 34 year-old Vazquez allowed 4 ER's and 8 hits in 3 IP during his last start.
More minor league movement after the promotion of Nova include D.J. Mitchell (11-4, 4.06 ERA in 23 games/22 starts for Double-A Trenton) and Hector Noesi (13-6, 2.99 ERA in 25 games/24 starts between Hi-A Tampa and Double-A Trenton) going to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Josh Romanski (8-4, 3.16 ERA in 15 starts for Lo-A Charleston) and Sean Black (7-8, 3.88 ERA in 23 games/22 starts for Lo-A Charleston) moving to Hi-A Tampa.
Tampa Bay Rays
Relievers Mike Ekstrom and Dale Thayer were optioned to the minors to make room for starting pitchers Wade Davis and Jeff Niemann, who both missed time with strained shoulders.
While Davis returned with a solid start (5.1 IP, 2 ER, 6 H, 3 BB, 5 K), Niemann was lit up for 10 ER's and 8 hits in 3.1 IP.
AL CENTRAL
Chicago White Sox
Setup men Matt Thornton and J.J. Putz were placed on the DL and replaced by Erick Threets, who was activated from the DL after missing time with turf toe, and Lucas Harrell, who was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte.
Thornton, who as a 2.66 ERA and 20 holds, has a strained left forearm. Putz, who has a 2.68 ERA and 13 holds, has right knee tendinitis.
Detroit Tigers
Outfielder Casper Wells, who had a minor league OPS of 1.246 in August, was recalled from the minors. The 25 year-old is just 2-for-11 in the big leagues, where he will back up at all three outfield spots.
Enrique Gonzalez, who had a 3.81 ERA with 17 BB's and 13 K's in 18 relief appearances, was designated for assignment to make room.
In other news, Magglio Ordoñez will undergo season-ending ankle surgery. The 36 year-old, who was originally expected to return before the end of the season after breaking his ankle in late July, was hitting .303 with 12 HR's and 59 RBI's in 84 games.
Minnesota Twins
Randy Flores, who had been designated for assignment by the Rockies last week, was claimed off waivers. The 35 year-old left-hander had a 2.96 ERA in 47 relief appearances for the Rockies.
To make room on the 40-man roster, Ron Mahay was transferred to the 60-Day DL and Anthony Slama was optioned to the minors.
AL WEST
Oakland Athletics
Travis Buck was optioned to the minors after going 0-for-10 with 4 K's in his latest stint with team.
Matt Carson, who is 8-for-41 in two previous stints with the team, was recalled. The 29 year-old was hitting .303 with 13 HR's for Triple-A Sacramento.
Texas Rangers
Rich Harden and Matt Treanor were activated from the DL and Alex Cora had his contract purchased from the minors.
Harden threw 6.2 inning of no-hit ball in his return from right shoulder tendinitis. Treanor, who was out since July 24th with a sprained knee, was the starting catcher in Harden's outing. Cora had been recently signed to a minor league deal after being released by the Mets.
To create roster space, Taylor Teagarden was optioned to the minors, Scott Feldman was placed on the DL with knee soreness, and Joaquin Arias was designated for assignment.
NL EAST
Florida Marlins
Cameron Maybin was recalled from the minors, where he was hitting .338 with 4 HR's and 23 RBI's in 33 games for Triple-A New Orleans. The 23 year-old, who is 4-for-9 in two games since joining the team, takes the roster spot of Cody Ross, who was claimed off waivers by the Giants earlier in the week.
Washington Nationals
Stephen Strasburg was placed on the DL and is likely to be shut down for the season with a strained flexor tendon in his right forearm. The 22 year-old is 5-3 with a 2.91 ERA, 17 BB's, and 92 K's in 68 IP (12 starts) in his rookie season.
Colin Balester was recalled to take his spot and then optioned back to the minors after Wednesday's game to make room for Jordan Zimmermann, who will make his 2010 debut in today's game. The 24 year-old, who was the team's top pitching prospect pre-Strasburg, is returning from Tommy John surgery. He made 16 starts in '09, posting a 4.63 ERA with 92 K's in 91.1 IP.
NL CENTRAL
Chicago Cubs
Geovany Soto was activated from the DL, Micah Hoffpauir was recalled, and Scott Maine had his contract purchased from the minors.
Soto, who missed time with a sprained shoulder, is hitting .285 with 15 HR's and 46 RBI's in 91 games.
Hoffpauir, who should get some starts at 1B, is just 1-for-12 in the big leagues this season but is hitting .282 with 22 HR's and 93 RBI's in 117 games for Triple-A Iowa.
Maine, who has yet to make his big league debut, was acquired from the D'Backs this offseason in the deal for Aaron Heilman. The 25 year-old was 4-2 with a 3.14 ERA and 10 saves in 45 relief appearances between Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa.
To make room on the roster, Justin Berg, Welington Castillo, and Sam Fuld were optioned to the minors.
Cincinnati Reds
Jim Edmonds was placed on the DL with a strained oblique after playing in just nine games since being acquired from Milwaukee. The 40 year-old outfielder is 3-for-22 with 1 HR in those nine games.
Chris Valaika, who was hitting .304 in 118 games for Triple-A Louisville, and Sam LeCure (8-3, 3.67 ERA in 15 starts for Louisville) were recalled from the minors. Jordan Smith was optioned to the minors. The 24 year-old was 2-2 with a 3.67 ERA and one save in 27 relief appearances.
Houston Astros
Infielder Matt Downs was claimed off waivers after being designated for assignment by the Giants. The 26 year-old is hitting .244 with 1 HR and 7 RBI's in 29 big league games this season and .254 with 7 HR's and 28 RBI's in 56 Triple-A games. He was assigned to Triple-A Round Rock.
In other news, the team learned that starting pitcher Brian Moehler will undergo surgery to repair a muscle in his lower abdomen. The 38 year-old, who is 1-4 with a 4.92 ERA in 56.2 IP this season, has been on the DL since July 17th and recently tossed three shutout innings in a rehab start with Round Rock.
Milwaukee Brewers
Reliever David Riske was released to make room for outfielder Carlos Gomez, who was activated from the DL. The 33 year-old Riske returned from 2009 Tommy John surgery to make 23 relief appearances and post a 5.01 ERA. He was in the final year of a three-year, $13M deal.
As for Gomez, it is not certain how he will fit into the outfield picture going forward. The 24 year-old is hitting just .228 with 5 HR's and 10 SB's in 76 games while rookie Lorenzo Cain has been impressive, hitting .317 in 18 games as a big leaguer.
Pittsburgh Pirates
Jeff Clement (knee irritation) and Ross Ohlendorf (strained shoulder) were placed on the DL and replaced by Justin Thomas and Brian Burres, who were recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis and will pitch out of the Pirates' bullpen.
Ohlendorf, who is 1-11, with a 4.07 ERA in 21 starts, has been replaced in the starting rotation by Daniel McCutchen, who had his best start of the season yesterday with six shutout innings in a win against the Cardinals.
St. Louis Cardinals
Dennys Reyes was placed on the DL with a strained elbow. The 33 year-old has a 3.94 ERA with 6 holds in 50 relief appearances. Fernando Salas was recalled from the minors. This is his sixth different stint with the team in 2010. The 25 year-old has posted a 2.35 ERA in 13 relief appearances with the club.
NL WEST
Arizona Diamondbacks
Infielder Bobby Crosby, who was acquired in the deal for Chris Snyder at the trade deadline, was released. The 30 year-old former AL Rookie of the Year was 2-for-12 with 2 2B's and 2 RBI's with the D'Backs. Ryan Roberts was recalled from Triple-A Reno. The 29 year-old is 3-for-21 in the big leagues this season after a solid rookie campaign in 2009 when he hit .279 with 7 HR's and 7 SB's in 110 games.
Los Angeles Dodgers
A.J. Ellis was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque to make room for Rod Barajas, who was claimed off waivers from the Mets. The 29 year-old Ellis hit just .208 with 0 HR's and 10 RBI's in 27 games for the Dodgers. Meanwhile, Barajas, 34, was 3-for-4 with a HR, 3 RBI's, and 2 2B's in his debut with the club.
San Francisco Giants
Cody Ross was added to the roster after being claimed off waivers from the Marlins. The 29 year-old is 4-for-9 as a Giant. Reliever Guillermo Mota was placed on the DL with IT band syndrome to make room on the 25-man roster. Matt Downs was designated for assignment (and claimed by the Astros) to make room on the 40-man roster.
In minor league news, Brandon Belt was promoted yet again, this time from Double-A Richmond to Triple-A Fresno. The 22 year-old, who has to be given consideration for Minor League Player of the Year, homered (click here for video) and walked twice in his Triple-A debut and his now hitting a combined .363 with 20 HR's, 103 RBI's, 38 2B's, 10 3B's, 82 BB's, and 21 SB's between Hi-A San Jose, Richmond, and Fresno.
