We already knew that the Giants had one of the best pitching staffs in baseball coming into this season. It was their mediocre offense that was holding them back. In the month of July, we found out just how good this team is with a potent offense behind them. Led by rookie Buster Posey, veteran Aubrey Huff, and journeyman Andres Torres, the team won 20 games, closing the NL West lead to 1.5 games behind the 1st place Padres, who went 14-10 in the month.

While nothing significant happened in the NL Central standings, the NL East welcomed the Florida Marlins back into contention. The team, which was almost certain to be big sellers at the trade deadline, won 16 games in July and instead held on to their key players (Dan Uggla, Cody Ross, Leo Nuñez, Ricky Nolasco) and added a reliever (Will Ohman) for the stretch run.

The biggest loser of the month was the Mets, who went 9-17 and lost 5 games in the standings to the 1st place Braves. The D'Backs (7-18) and Pirates (9-16) continued their losing ways and were easily the biggest sellers at the deadline. More on that later this week. On to the July All-Star team ...
