The hiatus is over and time to get back to work for the second half of the season. Its been three weeks since my last post, but it was almost like time stood still as the 18 year-old Estevez repeats as the top pitcher for this past week. The right-hander was also my choice on June 30th, as he struck out 10 batters in six shutout innings on June 25th. He continues to strike out hitters in the Dominican Summer League and is now ranked 4th in the league with 53 K’s after striking out 9 without issuing a walk in seven shutout innings on July 13th. During his last three starts, Estevez boasts a K/BB rate of 21:1. If not for three bad outings where he has gone 0-2 while giving up 12 ER- the only earned runs issued in his 8 starts - his performance would be downright absurd. Again, information on his pitches is absent but his command remains consistent. His splits illustrate that he’s becoming a fly ball pitcher, with a 51% FB rate versus a 39% groundball rate. Though the ball is spending more time in the air, Estevez has kept the ball inside the park. He has yet to serve up a home run in his 44.2 innings pitched.
