*MLBDepthCharts.com considers any player not on a team's 40-man roster, in AAA, or ranked as a top 10 prospect by Baseball America or top 11 prospect by Baseball Prospectus before the 2010 season as an 'under the radar' player.
Under the Radar Minor League AL Pitching Performance of the Week
RHP Kyle Weiland, Double-A Portland (BOS)
season stats: 5-5, 3.82 ERA, 94.1 IP, 73 H, 35 BB, 91 K in 18 starts
July 21–July 27 stats: 7 IP, 0 ER, H, 0 BB, 8 K in 1 start
A college closer with the University of Notre Dame, Weiland has made 54 starts since being taken by the Sox in the 3rd round of the 2008 draft. The results have been quite impressive, thus far. Overall, he's allowed 228 hits in 287 IP with 102 BB's and 271 K's. Since allowing 8 ER's in a start in late-April, the 23 year-old is 5-3 with a 2.91 ERA and has allowed just 54 hits in 80.1 IP. Overshadowed by the presence of the organization's top pitching prospect, Casey Kelly, the 6'4" Weiland has easily been the best pitcher on the staff and should show up on top prospect lists this coming offseason.
Honorable Mentions
RHP Brett Brach, Lo-A Lake County (CLE)
season stats: 2-6, 3.23 ERA, 75.1 IP, 81 H, 21 BB, 57 K in 16 games (14 starts; 2 relief appearances w/Hi-A Kinston)
July 21-July 27 stats: 9 IP, 0 ER, 7 H, BB, 5 K in 1 start
RHP Ryan Buch, Lo-A Kannapolis (CHW)
season stats: 5-1, 2.20 ERA, 57.1 IP, 35 H, 17 BB, 48 K in 21 games (7 starts; 4 starts w/short-season Bristol)
July 21–July 27 stats: 7 IP, 0 ER, H, 0 BB, 5 K in 1 start
