RHP Erik Davis, Hi-A Lake Elsinore (SD)

After recording 16 wins with Lo-A Fort Wayne last season, the 6’4” right-hander was projected to suffer a letdown heading into the hitter-friendly California League in 2010. That has not been the case as the former 13th round pick out of Stanford is holding his own with six wins and five games with at least 7 K's in his last 10 starts, including what was easily his best start of the season on June 10th (6 IP, 0 ER, H, 0 BB, 9 K). The 23 year-old, who once threw four consecutive complete games in college, has yet to make it through the seventh inning in any of his 12 starts this season but has gone at least 6 IP in five of his last nine.
Now boasting a career record of 24-8 with an ERA of 3.71, Davis doesn't have overpowering stuff but gets by on locating his pitches and keeping the ball down (10 HR's allowed in 215.2 IP as a pro). With a knack for pitching backwards and utilizing his plus changeup and curveball, Davis also does a good job of reading swings and using that information to disrupt a hitter's timing. This heady approach on the mound is to be expected from a Stanford graduate. Projected as a back of the rotation starter or middle reliever, Davis' cerebral methods and winning ways could create a higher ceiling.
