*MLBDepthCharts.com considers any player not on a team's 40-man roster, in AAA, or ranked as a top 10 prospect by Baseball America or top 11 prospect by Baseball Prospectus before the 2010 season as an 'under the radar' player.
Under the Radar Minor League NL Hitting Performance of the Week
2B/SS Ryan Cavan, Lo-A Augusta (SF)
season stats: .272 BA, 7 HR, 38 RBI, 24 2B, 3B, 28 BB, 52 K, 7 SB in 74 games
June 23-June 29 stats: .444 BA (12-for-27), 4 HR, 3 2B, 9 RBI
A native of Belmont, CA, Cavan attended Trinity College in 2006, ranking 2nd in team batting, before transferring to Chapman University the following year. After starting all 49 games at shortstop and leading the team in batting average and OBP, Cavan transferred again, this time to UC Santa Barbara. Deemed ineligible due to NCAA transfer rules, he had to sit out all of 2008 but returned to NCAA play in 2009 for his junior season, playing well enough to entice the Giants to draft him in the 16th round of the draft. The switch-hitter debuted with Short-Season Salem-Keizer after signing, hitting .277 with 9 HR, 5 triples, and 35 walks in 58 games.
Overshadowed in 2010 by teammates and top prospects Christopher Dominguez and Tommy Joseph, the 23 year-old is holding his own in the Sally League and it was he who has overshadowed any other player in the league recently. In a four-game stretch from June 25-June 28, Cavan had 11 hits, including 4 HR's, 3 2B's, and 9 RBI's. Described as a ‘gamer’, the 5'10" Cavan has an ability to work any pitcher into a hitters count. With his willingness to learn and grow, he has the potential to become a true sleeper in the organization.
