Under the Radar Minor League AL Pitching Performance of the Week
LHP Robert Erlin, Lo-A Hickory (TEX)
season stats: 3-1, 1.34 ERA, 60.1 IP, 37 H, 10 BB, 62 K, 16 games (8 starts)
June 23–June 29 stats: 6 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 BB, 8 K in 1 start
A 3rd Round pick in '09, Erlin made just three relief appearances (4 IP, ER, 5 H, BB, 9 K) in the AZL after signing. Back in the 'pen to begin his first full season with Lo-A Hickory, the 19 year-old allowed just one run in 16 appearances with 22 K's in 20.1 IP. Moved to the rotation in mid-May, Erlin debuted with five no-hit innings and 9 K's without a walk. After six solid outings, in which he allowed more than 2 ER's just once, the 6'0 lefty did it again. With a nearly identical line to his first start on May 18th, Erlin threw six no-hit innings on June 27th with 8 K's and 0 BB's. The Rangers might have the deepest farm system in the majors and Erlin is in the second tier of the best prospects in the organization. That could change if he continues to pitch like he has. It is uncertain if the Rangers want to be aggressive with the youngster and promote him to Bakersfield, or just let him continue to build his confidence by dominating Sally League hitters.
