Pickups - June 30, 2010

"Pickups" is a weekly column that highlights current players I would target who are available on the waiver market in a majority of leagues.

Gaby Sanchez, 1B (FLA): Since being promoted to the 2-hole, Sanchez has shown tremendous improvement in his production. He's had a great June to date hitting in front of Hanley Ramirez. Over 24 games, he owns a .368 average with a 1.014 OPS, including 4 HR's and 2 SB's. A very well-balanced 1B who would fit nicely in the UTIL spot on a lot of 12 team mixed rosters, I wouldn't write off an end line of about .300/95/18/85/8.

Chipper Jones, 3B (ATL): With early season struggles and even retirement speculation being thrown around, Chipper was having a tough year. Seemingly in response to the recent Heyward injury, he's picked up the slack with an 11-game hit streak, which includes 2 HR's, 2 SB's, and 10 RBI's. It's surprising to me how he is only owned in 57% of Y! Leagues at the moment - less than the likes of Aramis Ramirez and Ian Stewart. Pick him up if you need corner infield help because Chipper should produce as long as he stays on the field (which I agree can be difficult).

Brandon Morrow, RHP (TOR): Including yesterday's loss against Cleveland, Morrow has struck out 8 batters in three of his last six outings, with today being the only start where he's surrendered more than 2 ER's. The key to his success has been command. He's historically had trouble finding the zone but over each of those 6 starts, he's also walked 3 or fewer. Looking at underlying numbers, he's improved in both opponent O-Swing % (29.5) and Contact (74.7). A former first round pick, Morrow certainly has the stuff to be a front end rotation horse. It's nice to see him start to put it together. I certainly would invest in him, even with the moderate risk that comes with his command.
