not a lot of depth to this roster

Whatever... We have one of the top 5-10 teams in the Majors!! I can see the Brewers making a deep run in the playoffs if we avoid injuries.

Deep lineup. They have the potential for 5 30 homerun players and it seems pretty safe to say that at least 4 of them will drive in 100+ runs as well.

Defense is the only thing that scares me a little. Living in KC I've had the pleasure to watch Betancourt butcher the SS position for longer than any fan deserves. If he stays healthy and hits to to form as he did last year it might take some of the bite out of it, but its still probably going to be hard to watch that double play combination together on some nights

Centerfield and catcher also offer some major questions, as well as the health of Hawkins and Saito, those are some major variables.

Without question though their staff from top to bottom is absolutely stacked

I have a feeling Ron is going to put GoGo in the number 2 spot and Corey in the 6 hole for the chance to drive in runs. Jason what do you think?

I'd like the lineup much better if that was the case, especially if Gomez improves. Don't you think Hart would hit in front of McGehee, though, if moved down in the order?

No I think McGehee is perfect in the 5 spot. Perfect protection for the Prince.

Jason... you can switch Marcum and Wolf around because Ron said he wants to break up the lefties in the rotation.

Definitely. Thanks for the tip!

Nice work Jason, you got our lineup correct!! Ron said that is the lineup he will most likely be using this year.

Jason... your projected roster looks very good. The only thing I would change is either Sean Green or Mark DiFelice taking McClendon's spot. Cuz I think if DiFelice shows he's 100% again, I think he takes the last bullpen spot. Otherwise looks really good!!

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... February 20, 2011 at 3:33 PM

I agree on the bullpen spot. Both were solid relievers, especially DiFelice, before the injury. However, I'd like to see both prove they're 100% healthy early in Spring Training before I make a projection change. McClendon was pretty good himself in 2010, though. Should be a good battle if everyone is healthy.

There are two situations where I see McClendon making the team out of ST:

1) Hawkins isn't ready to go or
2) Green is terrible in ST

I would imagine Green has the advantage over McClendon going into ST.

I hope Kottaras and Boggs beat out Nieves and Kotsay for bench spots, but that may be wishful thinking.

Wow this Brewers team is deep... Very potent lineup, top 10 rotation... Can't wait to watch the battle between Brewers and Reds for the Central title!!

Dustin said... March 8, 2011 at 5:52 PM

Jason... I have a feeling Brandon Boggs will make the team over Chris Dickerson since the Brewers are looking for a RH bench bat. Also Dickerson has an option left where as Boggs is out of options.

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... March 8, 2011 at 7:17 PM

Hey Dustin. Definitely worth considering. My thought was that it would be Dickerson all along because he provided the most offensive potential in CF if Gomez faltered again. However, if they think Boggs can provide some offense and spell Gomez on occasion, then maybe he is the guy. He's having a great camp and I know Gomez looks a lot better this year, so I think that scenario is more likely now than when camp started. I'll be monitoring closely. Send me any links on this topic if you see any. Thanks!

You got it man!!

Dustin said... March 23, 2011 at 5:48 PM

Jason... I have changed my feelings about Boggs making the team. May I ask why you think Boggs will make the team? I think since spring training started that Dickerson had the 4th OF spot wrapped up. So I would replace Boggs with Dickerson.

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... March 23, 2011 at 6:05 PM

When I checked on them last week, Dickerson had just suffered his second injury of the spring and wasn't hitting much. Boggs was still red-hot. I think he was still around .375. A week later, Dickerson is tearing it up and Boggs has slowed down. Probably switch them soon. Only reason not to is Boggs is out of options.

Do you think that Morgan will be on the bench all season long?

I feel like he is a much better bat than Gomez, and although he doesnt match Carlos' speed, Morgan is still pretty quick himself.

How do you see this working out?

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... March 28, 2011 at 1:32 PM

Neither gets on base at a high enough level to take advantage of their speed. I think they'll stick with Gomez unless he goes into an extended slump, then they'll just go with the hot hand after that. I think they definitely hope Gomez improves. He has much more upside than Morgan.

KeithyP said... March 29, 2011 at 7:10 AM

I disagree. Morgan is a valuable player especially in the Brewers lineup.

He has a.344 OBP career OBP compared to Gomez's .293.

Morgan has batted .037 better in his career than Gomez(.283 to .246) with 100 less striekouts.

Morgan has 92 SBs compared to 77 for Gomez(who cares about caught stealing)

Yes Gomez has the more powerful bat but we are talking about 17 hrs to 4 hrs over 4 seasons.

Morgan has more Triples(18-15) but less doubles(53-48) and runs(182-175), but the Runs can be attributed to Gomez always being on the better offensive team.

Overall Morgan to me is the player I want on the field everyday.

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... March 29, 2011 at 9:33 AM

You're right in that Morgan has been the better and more productive player over the past few seasons but this decision is based on upside. If (and this is a very big IF) Gomez can come closer to reaching his potential, he is a much better player than Morgan. Don't know how long they are going to give him but they know they have Morgan in case Gomez sucks again. It could be 2 months. It could be 2 weeks. I think this is Gomez' last chance to prove he can get more out of his talent.
