Jason Kendall?

Recovering from shoulder surgery. Not expected to be ready before May, at the earliest.

Can't see Texeira or Chavez being in the bullpen when the season begins. Probably Greg Holland would replace them with one of the following: Louis Coleman, Everett Teaford, or Nathan Adcock.

Still too early in camp to make judgement. All those guys are in the mix. Will be interesting to see who it comes down to during the past 7-10 days.

How about Luis Mendoza? He has looked good so far in spring, and was very good in the minors last year.

Added him to the 'Outside Looking In'. I'm sure they're looking at 8-10 guys for 4-5 available bullpen spots.

You all see no way that Nathan Adcock, a rule V pick, makes the team?

Re: Adcock

Definitely in the mix and off to a great start this spring. Out of all the teams that are viewed as in 'rebuilding mode', the Royals probably acknowledge it more than any of the others so they are more likely to try and hold onto their Rule V pick. It would be quite a jump from HiA but they wouldn't have picked him if they didn't think he had at least a small chance of succeeding. Pitching in long relief on a non-contending team shouldn't be too much pressure. Should be interesting.

Rule V picks have been pretty good for the Royals, and I don't see GMDM rolling the dice like he did with Edgar Osuna last year. Chavez and Texiera certainly need to pitch well because there is a large contigent of people knocking on the door.

I am curious about your thoughts about the Royals rotation. I have this sneaking suspicion that Chen may be relegated to the bullpen and O'Sullivan and Mazzaro man the 4th and 5th starter roles.

The Royals know this is a transition year and Chen's presence in the rotation will allow the team to ease some of these younger players in, such as O'Sullivan and some of the other guys they might want to take a look at before the big boys arrive (Montgomery, Lamb, Duffy, etc). He's not in their future plans but he pitched very well last season and will give them a better chance to at least be competitive than the younger guys. By the second half of the season, however, I can see Chen traded or in the 'pen to make room for a young guy. In my opinion, he isn't being paid $2MM to pitch in middle relief, at least not to start the season.

Chavez optioned to Triple A. I looks like Texiera will be next with how Luis Mendoza is throwing.

What are the option staus' of Mazzaro and O'Sullivan? That could play into the final decision for the 5th starter.

It looks like Jason Kendall will be healthy for Opening Day (ugh!). With Pena and May out of options, it looks like KC will break camp with 3 catchers...

I still think they convince Kendall to slow down and start the season on the DL. That will give them some more time to assess Peña and May or maybe trade one. Three catchers? For what? None of them offer much as a pinch-hitter so I don't think it will happen.

Mazzaro and O'Sullivan both have options so it will come down to the most impressive pitcher this spring. Both should get a few more starts so those should be important.

Regarding the bullpen, remember that TIm Collins already has to be added to the 40-man before the season so someone currently on it will have to be removed. If Mendoza is added, someone else would have to be removed. They may have more than a few players who are expendable but we don't know for sure. Might start him in the minors just because they can.

Wow! Matt Treanor certainly shakes up the Royals catching situation. It seems to me that the writing is on the wall that Brayan Pena is not in the Royals long-term plans. I am still holding out hope that Jason Kendall will land somewhere else (via trade or some other roster move) when he has finished his amazing recovery from the injury...

I certainly hope that Jeffress makes the team. It would be disheartening to know that the Royals traded Grienke for two AAA players. I know both he and Cain are in KC's plans for the future, but Melky Cabrera and Kanekoa Teixeira on the 25 in front of them is tough to stomach...

Heard they were leaning towards keeping Peña. Regardless, I don't think they believe Peña or May are in their future plans. Brining in a guy like Treanor ensures that the young pitching staff will be working with a veteran who is known for working well with a pitching staff. With all of the young pitchers expected to arrive in KC over the next two years, it makes sense to have a veteran behind the plate.

Jeffress is still in the mix but from what I've heard, he has a lot of work to do. He's never pitched a game in AAA and could use some time there to work on his secondary pitches. 100 mph fastballs are tough to hit but not when hitters don't have to think of anything else but that pitch.
