I've been thinking about whether to add the top 30 rank next to the player's name. If I do, it'll happen in the next few weeks. Thanks!

The Reds have called up Chris Heisey, Dickerson hurt his wrist last night.

Rehab Updates....

Homer Bailey made one start in AAA (pitched awful) and has now been shut down after having a setback with inflammation in his shoulder. With the exception of 5 starts against the Pirates Homer Bailey's career ERA in the bigs is over a 6, combined with how LeCure has filled in...I must say this isn't a huge loss.

Edison Volquez made his first rehab start in high A Lynchburg this past weekend he is scheduled to start again Thursday. He is on a strict pitch count; if all goes well he will make at least 2 starts in AA and at least 2 more in AAA. That would put him on schedule for a possible return to the bigs right after the all star break. That would be considered a quick return from his August 3rd, 2009 Tommy John surgery.

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... June 16, 2010 at 2:46 PM

I've been hearing that Volquez would be back soon. That is surprising considering that a lot of pitchers, especially starters, take over a year to get back in game action and another season before their command is back after TJ surgery. Could be the difference in the NL Central if he comes back in top form.

No way to tell but I wouldn't be shocked if his roids assisted in his muscles growing back faster and stronger. No one can prove he took them on purpose, but most people in the Cincy area feel he did.

Jose Arredondo is on the Reds 40 man 60 day dl roster. His contract was purchased weeks ago and immediately placed on the dl. Though he doesn't count towards the 40 man roster right now he is under team control, if his minor league contract hadn't been purchased he would have been a FA at the end of the year.

Good catch. I remember noticing that he wasn't on the AAA roster the other day but then got sidetracked and never looked into it. Thanks!

Francisco was optioned back to AAA, Edmonds is starting and batting 5th tonight.

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... August 9, 2010 at 1:06 PM

John Fay tweeted that Francisco was packing his bags but I've also read that Travis Wood was optioned to make room for Edmonds. I'll wait for the official word before I change anything.

Good deal, I've also heard both now....I have a had time believing they option Wood....he couldn't come back for minimum 10 days without an injury.

Not a lot of depth to this lineup

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... January 24, 2011 at 11:34 AM

I agree, although Votto is an MVP and I think Bruce is gonna have a huge season. If they struggle offensively during the season, I think they'll look to flip Alonso or one of the starters for some help.

How does Fisher make the team over Leake, LeCure, Maloney, Smith or even Willis? Maybe even Arredondo makes the team over Fisher

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... February 5, 2011 at 12:29 PM

Re: Fisher

A long reliever's job is to eat innings in games that aren't close or pitch early in a game if a starter gets knocked out. These guys can go 1-2 weeks without pitching at times so it's not a good fit for a young starter who would be better off pitching every fifth day in the minors. Maloney and LeCure might fit but not Leake or Wood (whichever one isn't in the rotation should be in AAA).

Arredondo is definitely a possibility to make this team if he shows he's all the way back from TJ surgery. He was a good reliever before his injury. But you gotta be sure he's healthy before penciling him in over other guys.

Based on the last few years, I wouldn't guarantee Willis a spot on any team, other than maybe Seattle since their bullpen is so thin. But if he throws well in camp, he will put himself in the mix. I hear all the talk about how he's in great shape and he's ready to make an impact again but it doesn't mean anything until we see it on a consistent basis.

This is a deep team... It's going to be a hell of a battle between the Reds and the Brewers this season. Brewers are just as deep as the Reds are. I can't wait to watch it unfold!

Gomes is trash

Anonymous said... March 15, 2011 at 2:53 PM

The Reds won't carry 3 non-closing lefties in the pen. No team should. Move Burton up and place LeCure into long relief.

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... March 15, 2011 at 9:30 PM

So you think Bray and Willis are competing for the same spot? If the lefties are all good, I don't see why a team wouldn't carry three.

Anonymous said... March 22, 2011 at 3:50 AM

Yes, I think the two are competing for the same job. Bray has a guranteed mlb contract and was great splits last year. Teams don't carry 3 lefties (shouldn't) because the sheer volume of R/L hitters...it's all about the splits. Willis has no opt out clause so it'll be fine putting him in AAA to see if he actually solved his control problems.

Not to mention you have no true longman, LeCure is the viable candidate...and with the exception of one outing has looked very good thus far.

I bet Bruce will be hitting clean up by mid april. Hes far too talented and Rolen's health will be a major issue this year

Anonymous said... March 28, 2011 at 9:51 AM

Lewis could start the year on the 15 day dl, that would allow Francisco to make the team at least for a couple of weeks before a decision needed to be made on whether or not to option him back to AAA (like last year).
