ussmariner.com from 12/23 has Fister as the 5th starter, Olsen and French in the bullpen, and White and Texeira on the outside looking in. Other than that, I think you've nailed it. Also, why don't you have Kenji in the "signed by another team" category?

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... December 26, 2009 12:35 PM

Hey Tim. That's interesting. White was among the best relievers on the team last season (2.80 ERA, 15 holds in 52 games). His K/BB and K/IP rates aren't anything to get excited about but he only allowed 50 hits in 64.1 IP. Bottom line, he didn't do anything to put himself out of a job next season. The Brandon League acquisition might push White into middle relief, as opposed to a setup role, but I think he'll be an important part of the 'pen. As for Texeira, he's got some upside and should get a long look in spring training and will be considered as the long reliever.

Jason,

Sean White was put on the 60 day DL to end the year due to an inflamed right biceps tendon.

He may or may not be fully recovered by the start of next year.

Got it. Thanks for the info Tim.

Jason,

Some more comments from what I've been reading...

1. Most think that Josh Bard will make the team and that it could go either way on whether Moore or Johnson start with the team. It depends on Johnson's health coming off multiple surgeries and Moore's readiness to be in the bigs.

2. The talk in Seattle the last couple of days has been about starting the season with a 5-man bench and an 11-man pitching staff. Langerhans would stay on the team as an outfielder. Otherwise, if Byrnes starts in LF against a RHP and Bradley starts at DH, then the only backup outfielder you have is Griffey...and that would be bad.

3. Garrett Olson will probably not be the #5 starter. There are a lot of pitchers fighting for it in spring training but from what I've seen the chances go something like 1.Vargas, 2.Fister, 3.French, 4.Olson

4. Still very little expectation that Sean White breaks camp with the team this year.

5. Lots of buzz about Nick Hill. The expectation is that he will compete for a job in spring training as a lefty bullpen candidate and he's a darkhorse for that #5 spot.

6. Heard assistant GM Tony Blengino talk about having Milton Bradley in the #3 spot to have the 3 best OBP guys in the top 3. As a result, I would flip 3&4 and flip 5&6.

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... February 3, 2010 4:47 PM

Thanks for the info Tim. Going with five bench players make sense considering all the players they've brought in. I didn't think they re-signed Langerhans to a major league contract and not expect him to be on the 25-man roster. As for White, this is all I've been able to find on the web. It's from a recent story on MLB.com.

• Reliever Sean White: "He currently is throwing four days a week from about 120 feet and we anticipate him going to camp and competing for a position. He will progress slowly out of the gate."

What have you heard and who do you expect to take his bullpen spot if he's not ready? Also, what is the overall feeling on Olson? Since he was a top starting prospect for the O's a few years ago and he's still relatively young, I was assuming they weren't giving up on him as a starter just yet. As for Vargas, he pitched much better out of the 'pen so I figured he would continue in that role.

I only want to comment on 2 of the 9...
Kotchman will not hit. He will play great defense right up until he gets hurt. And he will get hurt...

Milton Bradley??? What's the problem? Jose Guillen not available? Geez!!

Jason,

Here's a post on the #5 starter job:

http://ussmariner.com/2010/02/12/out-of-left-handed-options/

And here's another post where they took a poll of who should be the #5 starter

http://www.lookoutlanding.com/2010/2/6/1292824/fifth-starter-rundown

Fister got 1,434 votes, Nick Hill got 355 and Olson got 34. I love this quote from the site authors:

"In the fifth starter breakdown poll posted below on the front page, Garrett Olson got 28 votes. I can forgive the 74 votes for Ryan Feierabend, kind of, but 28 for Olson? 1.2% of the total? What this tells me is that 1.1% of all votes in all polls are submitted by complete retards and 0.04% of all votes are submitted by Garrett Olson's mother."

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... February 13, 2010 4:22 PM

Can't argue with 1400 Mariner fans. So Fister is projected at #5 and Olson as the long reliever.

Anonymous said... March 21, 2010 3:01 PM

lopez at 3rd*

Tim Goff said... March 25, 2010 9:13 PM

Jason,

The latest I've heard:

1. Cliff Lee looks like he will start the season on the DL.

2. If Lee is on the DL, the M's will switch back to 12 pitchers.

3. Vargas is beating Fister for the 5th spot, but both will make the rotation if Lee is on the DL.

4. If the M's go with 12 pitchers, and Lee is on the DL, then Teixeira and French will make the bullpen. Olson has been bad/hurt.

5. Langerhans would be the bench player sacrificed for the 12th pitcher.

6. Sweeney has had such an awesome camp that the buzz in the Seattle media is that he has made the team at the expense of Garko.

Keep up the great work. By the way, a look at Tom Tango's playing time projections (which started today) might give you an idea of which players are expected to be in and which are projected to be out.

the lineups are apparently set already. ichiro, figgins, kotchman, bradley, griffey, lopez, gutierrez, johnson/moore, wilson

Jason, I believe Bedard has been put on the 15 day DL. Also, I thought Pauley had been sent down, but Woodward hadn't yet.

Anonymous said... April 4, 2010 8:14 AM

I'm confused, where did Mike Sweeney go?

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... April 4, 2010 8:42 AM

Re: Sweeney

Spacing issue. He was right next to Adam Moore instead of under him. After months of cutting, pasting, and dragging on an html converter, things like this start happening. A new, cleaner version of the team pages will be up soon. Sorry for the confusion!
