Hey Indy. This has been a tough lineup to project this offseason. To answer your question, I've kind of been stuck on trying to fit Jake Fox in the lineup ever since they acquired him. I was finally able to do it after this latest move. Here are a few reasons why I was comfortable with finally getting him in there:
1. Cust started 50 games in RF last season so the A's must feel at least semi-comfortable with him out there.
2. The way the rest of the lineup projects, I felt the team needed some more pop in the middle of the lineup (Fox) as opposed to Davis, who probably profiles better at the top or bottom of the order.
3. Having Davis as the fourth OF doesn't mean he won't get his AB's. This is just my projection of what would be the most-often used lineup by the club.
Hope that helps. I might be totally wrong but that's how I made sense of that projection.
hey... the a's will start davis period, he was their best player the second half and has proven more in the mlb and especially to the a's than jake fox...
if chavez makes it through spring, haha big if...
then fox has no place on the club period until injurys.
buck should be on the 25 man as the 4th outfielder
and devine/blevins are in the bullpen, you can count on it
This lineup can go a few different directions and I think it's unlikely they'll stick with a set lineup. Davis will get his AB's, especially if he proves '09 wasn't a fluke, but I just like their lineup better with Fox in the middle behind Cust as opposed to Davis at the bottom.
This would be my projection with Cust as the DH:

DH Jack Cust
3B Kevin Kouzmanoff
1B Daric Barton
LF Rajai Davis
2B Mark Ellis
SS Cliff Pennington

Re: Buck - I still think he's too young to get stuck as the 4th OF. I'd rather let him have his AB's in AAA.
Re: Devine - Have you read any updates on his injury status? He underwent TJ surgery in April. That would be a quick recovery if he's ready by opening day.

raja hit leadoff and something way over .300 for an a's team that managaed to score without HRs, they aint' gonna hit alot this year...
Id say right now the lineup would be (going into spring fully healthy)
1. Davis LF
2. Crisp CF
3. Sweeny RF
4. Cust DH
5. Kouz 3B
6. Barton 1B
7. Suzuki C
8. Ellis 2B
9. Pennington SS
you never now but going into spring i see it as that, the mlb is what have you done for me latley...
Buck- has proven he can play in the bigs. attitude has put him in the dog house, he lost the big wiggle, he's not too young anymore. the yankees ask about him for their LF spot.
Devine- expected to be fully healthy for the start of spring training.
Blevins recovered big time at the end of last season 22 innings 23k 6bb 19 hits, pretty damn good, after a terrible start, may have been playing hurt.

Jon Meloan is having Tommy John done this week, he will be placed on the 60-day DL.
I don't think it will be Travis Buck. Not having an actual backup SS is very scary I'd have to think Rosales now makes the club, Buck still gets optioned to the minors and either Gross or Patterson start in the outfield for a while.
