Clay has earned the 4th or 5th rotation spot.

I agree but who do you think gets bumped from the rotation? Matsuzaka or Wakefield?

Justin said... January 20, 2010 11:26 AM

Hi Jason
Well from listening to Francona it sounds like Wakefield will not be ready to start the season. Also given his injury problems, I think he be better suited as a spot starter. Matsuzaka looked good in september , and reports say he is in good shape for this year.So he has more upside.

Wakefield would be nice to have pitching out of the bullpen; very versatile arm.

i dont think that martinez will be batting in the number 3 spot. Their most likely going to bat youk there and then francona has got some decisions to make after that

With Dice-K having yet to throw in a spring training game and unlikely to do so until the middle of next week at the earliest, indications are that he will not start the season in the rotation, but most likely on the DL. This would most likely move Wakefield into the rotation and open up a spot for long-man in the pen--right now Bonser would probably be the front-runner for that bullpen spot.

Jed Lowrie should also start the year on the dl (mono) no point in burning an option on him untill they know he isn't needed.

Tazawa is xpected to be placed on 15-day DL. Might be out for the season

V. Martinez will in fact be hitting #3 and Youkilis #4. It's AFTER THAT that there are some options... I would personally do this:

1.Ellsbury
2.Pedroia
3.Martinez
4.Youkilis
5.Drew
6.Scutaro
7.Ortiz
8.Beltre
9.Cameron

Now here me out here;

Basically this gives you two sets of 1-4 hitters with one good cleanup hitter (in youkilis) and one ok cleanup hitter (in beltre) And then Cameron hitting 5 the second time around.

Drew is a very high obp guy and so is scutaro & before last year Ortiz himself was hitting 3. Therefore if you have a quick first inning of the game and you start the next inning with your 5 hitter its basically another top of the lineup. This also gives you your top 6 hitters in the lineup that are going to absolutely wear out the opposing pitching.

Research shows that more than 75% of all innnings are started with the numbers 1,2,5 &6 hitters in the lineup and in those spots in my scenario you have the 4 best options (in my opinion) to leadoff an inning. And on top of that you almost NEVER will have one of your "power bats" V Mart, Youkilis and Ortiz leading off an inning and thus they will be less likely to have as many at bats with nobody on base.

But hey, i'm sitting at a computer typing my ideas and not writing down the opening day lineup for the actual Red Sox for a reason. GO SOX!!!!!!!!!!
