Not out of the question but much more of a long shot if they sign Chris Young or Jeff Francis or some one of that caliber. He'd have to beat out Gee if that was the case. Could happen. I'm sure they will be pulling for the $36 million dollar man to contribute in some way.

As a life-long Mets fan I have to say...with the new manager...I haven't seen this sort of potential for 121 losses since the late '70s...and I'm usually one of the hopelessly optimistic ones...I mean, sure, yeah if Pelfrey and Niese give 'em 450 innings of 135 ERA+, Jose stays healthy for 150 games without sulking, Bay comes back better than ever...

Lots of 'ifs' but it's not out of the question that their core players can stay healthy. I think the biggest concern has to be the bullpen. I don't think they'll be 100-losses bad, but they're probably not as good as Florida or Atlanta and they're definitely not as good as the Phillies. Could be a very rough year but I think the organization expects that and will try to re-load again in 2012.

I see the Newark Star-Ledger isn't even listing Jennry Mejia as someone under consideration for the rotation this spring. Seems to me he's the only one with much upside. I wonder if it was just lazy reporting, or what the thinking is there...

I'm pretty sure Alderson mentioned early in the offseason that they wanted some stability for Mejia in 2011, meaning they didn't want him going back and forth between the majors and minors, between the rotation and bullpen. I think they want him to be a starter in the minors until they know he's ready for the big leagues. So he'll be in the Buffalo rotation to start the season and like with many top prospects, they hope he's in NY to stay once they do call him up.

I hate Mejia as a starter. He is a perfect set-up man/closer. As a starter he can not throw his best stuff and last 7 innings. I think we are making a mistake with him.

Same goes for Neftali Feliz and all the talk of him being a Starter

I agree. Power relievers are valuable in the 7-9 innings. I'm a Padres fan so I know first hand how important relief pitching can be late in games. They had a great year with one dominant starter, four average starters, 2-3 very good relievers, and 4-5 dominant relievers.

With the state of the Mets bullpen, it would make sense to prepare Mejia for a closer's role in 2012 but it sounds like they're sticking with him as a starter for now.

Now we are talking Jason... this is my projected and hopeful roster

IF the Mets can stay healthy, with that lineup (which I think a lot of people underrate) and Santana coming back late June/Early July, can the Mets compete for the Wild Card in your opinion? Clearly the Mets have no chance at competing with the Phillies.

Jason - MLBDepthCharts.com said... February 27, 2011 at 7:06 PM

They would need a lot to go right but crazier things have happened. Beltran and Bay appear to be healthy and the rest of the lineup is full of talent around them. The pitching staff is key, though. If Dickey pitches like last year and Chris Young stays healthy, the rotation should be fine until Santana comes back. Young is very good when healthy. Just hasn't been in a few years. Another question mark is whether Parnell and 1-2 other relievers can take care of the 7th and 8th innings. Like I said, lots of question marks but I don't think they're gonna suck unless injuries hit them as bad as last year.

LiLbRo said... February 27, 2011 at 9:54 PM

Agreed. Reyes, Beltran, Wright and Bay all could be all-stars if healthy, so if Pagan can get on base, Davis provides power, Thole just makes contact then the Mets should have plenty of offense, but your right its going to come down to how the rotation and bullpen play which both have a lot of question marks.
