LF David Murphy: hitting .288 with 17 HR's and 88 RBI's in 518 AB's since arriving in Texas at the '07 trade deadline

IF Elvis Andrus: the move by Michael Young to 3B makes room for the team's #4 prospect, although he might be better off starting the season in AAA; he hit .295 with 54 SB's in AA last season
Bench
C Taylor Teagarden: team's #6 prospect, according to BA, is an above average defender and was pretty impressive with the bat in a late-season audition with the Rangers (.319 BA, 6 HR's in 47 AB's) UPDATE 3/25 - team might be concerned that Teagarden's ability to stay healthy, which is a big reason why he likely won't be the opening day starter
SS Omar Vizquel: the veteran showed he had something left in the tank when he hit .304 over his last 115 AB's in '08 for the Giants; UPDATED 2/20 - the plan is to have Vizquel be a backup with Andrus the starter; Vizquel could be the perfect mentor for the 20 year-old Andrus
OF Marlon Byrd: hitting .302 with 20 HR's in 817 AB's over two seasons with Texas
OF Andruw Jones: many people think he is done; the Rangers will use spring training to decide on their own UPDATE 3/19 - it's free agency or the minors for Jones UPDATE 3/22 - it would take some roster shuffling, but it appears there is still a chance he ends up on the opening day roster UPDATE 4/1 - will be the team's 5th outfielder
Starting Rotation
RHP Kevin Millwood: has gone 35-36 with a 4.89 ERA in 94 starts in three seasons with the Rangers

LHP Matt Harrison: was 9-3 in 15 starts as a rookie but his ERA was an inflated 5.49 and he allowed 12 HR's in 83.2 IP UPDATE 4/1 - looks like he'll be the #5 starter
Bullpen
RHP Frank Francisco: 29 year-old had his best season in '08, posting a 3.13 ERA with 83 K's in 63.1 IP UPDATE 2/28 - looks like Francisco will be the closer and Wilson will be the late-inning setup man

I would add RHP Warner Madrigal to the list of "Other Roster Candidates", and maybe LHP Joe Torres as well. Both will probably start the year in Oklahoma because of Turnbow and Donnelly's contract clauses and Nippert's lack of options, but they could make the decision more difficult with a good spring showing. And if you're going to leave Benoit on the list, you might as well include Eric Hurley. Overall good job!
The Rangers appear to want Hamilton to play RF with N.Cruz (and/or M.Byrd) playing CF.
Jones could start by default as the OF core is still dealing with injuries from last year. Rudy Jaramillo still thinks he has something left. Byrd had microfracture surgery on 10/1/08 and is only about 70% and could begin the season on the DL. Murphy should be healthy after his late-season knee surgery but there have been as yet no updates on his health as camp opened. Boggs has a sore shoulder right now that required a cortizone shot yesterday, a carryover from last season, so his health status is questionable. What does all of this mean? Jones might open as the starting CF, with Hambone moving to RF and Cruz to LF with Murphy becoming the 4th OF as he can play all 3 spots.
It is likely that Andrus starts off in AAA for the first 2-3 weeks in order to control him an extra yr, even if he appears ready to start. Arias has a bad shoulder so Duran s/b the utility guy. Salty s/b the nominal starter in a platoon arrangement with Tea. Catt might be released by the end of April as the OF health improves. Gabbard will start off in AAA in a long-relief role and still isn't 100%. Jennings will likely start off in AA (he lives in Frisco) and isn't 100% yet but would be the first called up to plug into the rotation in case of injury.
Thanks for the comments! I think that OF picture should clear up after a few weeks. Didn't realize they had so many guys banged up. That's probably why Jones picked Texas. I left Hurley off because I had read that he was out for the year and I think I read Benoit could return late in the season so I left him in there. Either way, I should add a 'disabled list' section for those guys.
In your "Other Roster Candidates", Haynes and Corey are not even invited to spring training, so they won't be making the roster.
From the The Sports Xchange: LHP Kason Gabbard, who pitched in a game environment (albeit a "B" game environment) Friday, is not expected to be at full strength for the start of the season. Gabbard underwent surgery to remove a bone spur last summer. He will likely start the season on the dl.
In other news Eric Hurley will miss the entire season on the DL.
dobber baseball is reporting teagarden is on the bench and JS will be the starting signal caller
