RHP Joel Pineiro: had a 6.05 ERA in the 2nd half of '08 while opponents batted .317 against him
RHP Chris Carpenter: 2005 NL Cy Young winner has missed most of the past two seasons with elbow trouble and is preparing for a return to the rotation as early as opening day; LaRussa has mentioned the possibility of using Carpenter as a closer when he returns UPDATE 2/28 - so far, so good UPDATE 3/12 - barring any setbacks, he'll start the season in the rotation UPDATE 3/18 - six scoreless innings in today's outing; the only question now is where he pitches in the rotation - at this rate, he could earn an opening day start
Bullpen
RHP Jason Motte: converted catcher can throw in the high 90's and could be the closer of the future UPDATE 3/10 - continues to pitch well this spring UPDATE 3/18 - there's still plenty of time left for someone else to step up but it sure sounds like Motte is the leading candidate for the closer's job
LHP Dennys Reyes: UPDATE 3/5 - signed to a two-year deal, reports ESPN's Buster Olney; the 31 year-old had a 2.33 ERA in '08 for the Twins and held lefties to a measly .202 BA and .250 OBP

So Mather gets bumped by Barton/Duncan...I doubt that. Rasmus determines alot of things on this lineup...
Orlando Hudson would look good in that lineup!!
Mather will make the team out of camp, most likely bumping Barton to AAA where he will get more regular AB's. Also, I don't think there is much chance of Thompson starting the year in the rotation. If Carpenter is not ready mgmt wants guys like Boggs, Todd and Walters to get a look. Any of them would likely be given a shot at the #5 spot if they show anything in camp.
Not sure how I missed Mather. Definitely ahead of Barton with his ability to play IF and OF and those 8 HR's in 133 AB's in '08 don't hurt his chances. Thanks for the heads-up!
TLR doesn't seem to be a big fan of Thompson...I highly doubt he is the the rotation. Plus Carpenter seems to be doing pretty well so far (according to a Matthew Leach column)
There was an article in the Post Dispatch about Rick Ankiel batting fourth http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/sports/stories.nsf/cardinals/story/7598ECE9EDB76B4C8625756B00092C72?OpenDocument
re: Ankiel batting fourth
Thanks! I noticed that he hit 4th in a game a few days ago behind Pujols. If Rasmus makes the team, he would be a logical choice to bat 2nd but who would hit 2nd in a lineup without Rasmus.
I'm pretty sure Rasmus will make the team. Tony has talked about batting Rasmus 9th(Tony bats pitchers 8th). I think his reasoning is that he doesn't want Rasmus to feel pressure to succeed because he has been the best prospect in the cards system for awhile now and fans expect a lot from him. Also this allows Rasmus to be the "second lead off man" like teams often do in the American League.
As far as for who bats second I would think that it may be Ludwick. This is a lot of power for the 2nd spot but Tony has used guys with power there in the past. Also it makes a little more sense to bat a righty there because otherwise it would be 3 out of 4 lefties in the first four spots.
Although, Duncan has batted 2nd a lot in the past...
Hitting in front of Pujols is probably the best spot to hit in baseball. Tony in the past has rotated different guys there depending if they need to see a lot of fastballs when they are in a funk.
Hitting 7th for the Cardinals one of the worst spots to hit because the pitcher hits 8th. I have a feeling Khalil Greene may hit there. And Yadi may bat before him.
Here is how I think the lineup will go, just an opinion. When Glaus comes back the cardinals will have quite the lineup.
Schumaker
Ludwick
Pujols
Ankiel
Mather/Freese
Molina
Greene
Pitcher
Rasmus
Unless Rasmus starts tearing things up, which in his limited pro history he has been something of a slow starter, he will be back in Memphis awaiting a June or All-Star break call-up. This would be a pragmatic move anyway as it would give the Cardinals an extra arbitration year with Colby as I understand. I can't see the Cards taking three left-handers north with them, so the slot would go to McClellan as Carpenter is experiencing no glitches as yet in reclaiming his pitching status. I haven't heard how Jess Todd is doing in camp, but I am of the opinion that he would the Kyle McClellan project of 2009 if the pitching does not turn out as it looks about four weeks from now.
Heres Matthew Leach's projected roster. Its interesting that he doesn't have Motte making the team

How do you have 26 players (13 pitchers and 13 hitters) make a 25 man roster?
Jaime Garcia will spend the season on the DL.
Unlikely Schumaker plays at second. He himself said a week or so ago that he doesn't think he can play there.

Barton, Boggs, and Manning went sent to minors
Royce Ring was placed on waivers today.
No way Ankiel is in left when Ludwick is in right.
Ankiel will be playing RF and Ludwick would be in LF.
According to general manager John Mozeliak, Schumaker has officially won the second base job, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
