Key to the Rockies season...Get Ian Stewart AB's. With Jeff Francis out for the year, A very shaky bullpen, and huge holes at 2B,CF and LF. Not to mention an aging 1B and slumping 3B...I could go on forever...We have to see what guys like Stewart and Dexter Fowler can do.
Re: Stewart
My prediction is that he'll somehow find his way into the middle of the everyday lineup by May 1st, at the latest. They will find a spot for him. The dude can hit. And that's not a good thing for me as I'm a Padre fan.
Rockies line up should look a little different since everything I read puts Spilborghs in the leadoff hole and Smith playing in left field. CarGo will almost start the season either on the bench or in AAA. Also, Hurdle said in the Rocky Mountain News today that's he's thinking about a line up where Helton will be followed by Atkins-Hawpe and Tulo in that order. Might be a good way to score some runs for this ball club.
Spilborghs and Smith are good players, but they are 4th outfielder types. The Rockies have put so many of these kind of players in their starting outfield unsuccessfully in the past. i.e. Jorge Piedra, Cory Sullivan, Larry Bigbie, Jeff Salazar. Losing Tavares 68 SB's is gonna be hard to get over let alone Holliday's bat.
Jason Hirsh was optioned to minor league camp in a somewhat suprising move.
Jason,
Have you read anywhere stating that they planned to purchase Podsednik's contract? He is hitting .209, you would figure Fowler or Ortmeier or even Stewart would have an edge.
Re: Podsednik
My point of view is that if Spilborghs wins the CF job, someone coming off of the bench has to be able to back him up. Ortmeier isn't a CF and Fowler isn't coming off the bench. If Fowler wins the CF job, Spilborghs backs him up and Podsednik is gone. But as of now, Podsednik can play CF and he's a veteran coming off a decent year with the Rockies so his spring numbers don't mean as much.
I think keeping Stewart on the roster is unrelated. They would probably like to keep him as a super-utility man, starting 4-5 games per week at 3B, 2B, 1B, and LF, but they might need to trade Jeff Baker first.
Jason,
Why no comments on Christian Colonel (1B) of the Rockies? Is he the reason why they want to trade Jeff Baker?
Re: Colonel
He wasn't on the radar when I posted the initial projections and while I did see his name mentioned a few times in the local papers, there was never a story that indicated he had a chance to make the team, at least from what I read. If I did, I would have added him to the 'Other Roster Candidates' section.
Be sure to check out the 'Next in line' or 'On the Fast Track' features on the new team page in the next few days. I'm sure he'll show up in one of those.
